Boo-yah! Never change a winning formula!
Oh, and Nuclear Assault's "Critical Mass", introduced by none other than Riki Rachtman!
And, as an added bonus - The Sims' house band plays "Angel of death".

A somewhat pumped-up Irish-y version of The Arrogant Worms' "Pirates of the Saskatchewan". Good beer-drinkin' music. Speaking of which...

Mr. Shiny loves 'em... so I decided to check them out myself.

"Great to be a Nerd' by the Arrogant Worms
It's great to be a Nerd, It's great to be a Nerd,
The only light we ever see is from our monitor
We argue about comic books and Internet connections
The biggest highlight of the year is the Star Trek Convention
Our Town's not big enough to sign up any stars
But we once met a red shirt who was phased by a Borg
It's great to be a Nerd, It's great to be a Nerd,
We wear our Star Trek uniforms and talk like Captain Kirk
We have our own heroes, who we try to emulate,
I dream of one day being as sexy as Bill Gates
We hate watching sports cause were reading Carl Sagan
But we'd watch the Olympics if they played Dungeons and Dragons
It's great to be a Nerd, It's great to be a Nerd,
We think Tolkien was a genius and Shakespeare was a turd
We rarely get a date, or get talked to by a girl
Unless they're having trouble with their Algebra homework
Were emotionally bereft and sexually frustrated
But we can download photographs of agent Scully naked
It's great to be a Nerd, It's great to be a Nerd,
We know the truth is out there but we'd have to leave our rooms
We are the Nerds in your neighborhood
Polyesters a fashion statement
But theres more room on the beach for you
Cause were locked in our basement
It's great to be a Nerd, It's great to be a Nerd,
We like to wear colors that do not appear in nature
It's great to be a poorly dressed
Fashionless
Star Treking
Role Playing
90 Pound
When Wet Down
Pasty Skin
Pop Drinking
Underfed Genius
Yes, It's great to be a Nerd

Well, this is more of a future "What am I listening to...", as I've just checked the Nightwish website (www.nightwish.com). Their new album's out September 28th, and you can hear 3 snippets from it on their website. The new singer's voice isn't quite as strong as the previous one, but musically it's just as good as ever.
Lots of tour dates as well, especially for the USA and Germany/Scandinavia. Nothing yet for the UK (sniff); one thing for sure, if they do visit, I'm NOT missing out this time!

"Nursery Cryme," Genesis, 1971. Back when they still had a lead guitarist and a singer. "Fountain of Salmacis" and "The Musical Box" are classics; Steve Hackett is a guitar god. And no one should have EVER let Phil Collins to ANYTHING except play drums. He is NOT a singer, nor a songwriter, despite his billions of dollars that say otherwise.

Oh, you musical purists. ;) I wasn't down with most 80's pop but in the world of 80's pop Phil had his place. Allegedly better singers and songwriters couldn't reach his perch on that mountain. People didn't buy him because they were told to or because he was a stud we all envied or wanted to be with. He just wrote hooking material.
"I can feel it comin' in the air tonight, oh lord."
I wasn't a Collins fan, and I used to wonder aloud how his star could have risen so high, but his songwriting hook was strong enough that he got lyrics such as "Sussudio" over on people. How do you sell a song you cared so little about that when it was time to name it you looked around at the recording studio you were in and mangled studio to form sussudio? It's an artistic crime I tell ya. But I can hear that vocal and bass line in my head and I haven't heard it in a decade.
Phil has his own voice, and in the world of music, with it's posturing and mediocre sound-alikes, it isn't about having the most vocal tricks, greatest range, and smoothest timbre. It's about having a signature voice that sets you apart from the fray. Like Geddy Lee, Cat Stevens, Bon Scott, David Bowie, Joanie Mitchell. I think Phil's whiny sound was it's own thing, and I always respect artist's who have their own thing.

Therion, "Celebrators of the Becoming." Awesome double live album with mythological/mythical/D&D-themed lyrics, a talened choir backing the band (as always), and powerful, evocative music... and having seen them live on this tour in a small club only adds to the pleasure of listening to this CD set.

Actually I'm now feeling somewhat nauseated having defended Phil Collins this morning. I don't know why. I certainly wasn't trying to be a fractious contrarian (although I have been a didactic egalitarian--maybe I was instructing us to embrace tolerance of Phil Collins and consider him our equal). ;)

Yeah, but it sounds suspiciously like Peter Gabriel's, when HE was singing for Genesis and Phil was just the drummer... Anyway, I kinda like "Sussudio," it's fun pop. But then I compare it with the stuff Genesis was doing in the early 70's... there's no comparison. And after a decade of intervening experience, a person's music shouldn't get both shallower and less technically competent; that's a crime (cryme?).
Anyway, nothing wrong with being a contrarian; it's fun to look at different viewpoints.

I hear that. But the 80's demanded even previously popular artists, if they wanted to sell the big market, drop their technical standards and give the public a big plate of She-Bop brand cheese. That Bowie was never more popular than when he put out Let's Dance had him feeling musically unworthy for years. The majority of people in the US at the time wanted fluffy-minded fluffiness.
