Seasonal songs?

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

what sort of seasonal songs would bards in dnd sing to help or hinder people?

Simon and Garfunkel: Hazy Shade of Winter.
The Producers: Springtime for Hitler
Mungo Jerry: In the Summertime
Nat King Cole: Autumn leaves

Just play them on the lyre and sing in dulcet tone and you're there. ;)

You could also go with The Bangles version of the song.

Some other summer songs:

Summertime Blues ~ The Who (and a few others)
All Summer Long ~ The Beach Boys
Hot Fun In The Summertime ~ Sly and the Family Stone

I knew someone was going to mention The Bangles.

Guess I'll do the same and say that I pick Blue Cheer for Summertime Blues.

What'cha got for spring, autumn, and winter?

hell, yeah! Blue Cheer's version is double awesome.

Id like to see a bard shred out Satch's "Summer Song". Around here, summer is "Hot, hot, hotter than hell!". I love the Sly Stone pick too. "Summertime Girls" by Y & T! Van Hagar has those "Hot. Summer. Nights. That's my time of the year"

Autumn...man, I love Nat King Cole with "Autumn Leaves", but how about Plant n Page singin bout "now it's time for me to go, the autumn moon lights my way"?

Winter- Tori Amos has one with that title. And then there's Mama Cass and co's, "California Dreamin' on such a winter's day". "Little darling, it's been a long, cold, lonely winter...here comes the sun." by the Beatles. or from the mouth of Paul Di'Anno "Out of winter came a warhorse of steel! I've never killed a woman before...now I got to look for...Sanctuary from the law"! Alright, that one is a stretch.

You ever read Alan Dean Foster's Spellsinger series? Great stuff about a dude from 'now time' sent into a fantasy realm. The guy knew some guitar so he cast spells like a bard. "Sloop John B" by the Beach Boys summoned up a small ship for the group to use to travel across a sea...but the first mate got drunk, just like in the song. "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" summoned up a cool anthropomorphic elephant that carried a switchblade knife to fight for the group, IIRC.

Bunch of good songs listed there, Nomad.

Wow, a Paul Di'anno reference! Was that with Maiden, Battlezone, or a solo project?

That Spellsinger series sounds like a lot of fun. How amazing would that be? Going from cover band mediocrity in the real world to high powered bardic sorceror in another? And the way Foster translated the songs in so hooking.

"Sanctuary" is from the s/t Maiden record. Di'Anno's voice takes a while to get used to, but I like it. Sorta like Graham Bonnet(Rainbow,Marbles,Alcatrazz, solo).

I just noted that I don't have any loveydovey springtime songs on the list. hmmmm.

Oh and Steve Miller Band has "In the Wintertime". Awesome song.

Liberty's Edge

I never read the Spellsinger books, but a good friend of mine loved them, and Alan Dean Foster is often highly entertaining.

As for seasonal songs...."Christmas With the Devil" by Spinal Tap...;)

Grand Lodge

Yeah, Di'Anno sounds a bit different from Bruce Dickinson - but he's still pretty good. BTW, I saw him live a few years ago, and while he looks very different, he still sounds great. Also, we got to hang out a bit with him afterwards, and he's an all-over great guy.

Another good seasonal song would be Opeth - "Demon of the fall", though you need a rather grumpy bard to do that one justice...
