Slow website!!!!!

Website Feedback

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!

Somebody fix this website. IT IS SO SLOW!!! Where's the defibrillator? Red bull? Mountain dew? Anything???

I would be willing to pay another dollar a two an issue of Dragon and Dungeon if Paizo were to upgrade their website. Of all the websites I visit during the day, Paizo.com has got to be the slowest! What is the deal?

Of course, pbskids.org doesn't load fast either but I'm really not there too much on my own. :-

As has been stated in other threads about this subject, Paizo is aware of the problem and is looking to expand their bandwidth in the very near future. :)

I certainly hope so, it's been like this for more than a year...

Slow? Try "glacial". I am trying to download a 15.5 MB file on a broadband connection. My modem is capable of rocking and rolling at more than 256 MB/sec. What download speed do I get? try THREE KILOBITS PER SECOND. Seriously, even America Offline isn't this bad!

Yep, it's slow. I would like to think that it's worth the wait, mind you.
However, even when it's running 'normally', did the designer ever consider that regular fans of various sections way down at the bottom of the scrollbar have still got quite a while to wait before they get to the bits they're interested in.
Would it be reasonable to reconfigure so as to list the sections' headings (with links) before listing the sections? That way most people would get there quicker with the only downside being that regular fans of the very topmost sections would have to wait marginally longer.

There are more issues here than bandwidth.

1) Improper page coding. The pages don't even validate!

2) Using a good server with compression. Compressing text pages can reduce bandwidth use of the average site by 75%.

And that's just off the top of my head.

Validating pages has been on my wishlist for about a billion years, but due to the nature of our codebase it's unlikely to happen any time soon.

As for compressing responses, that's a good idea and I'm not really sure why we haven't done it before. I'll do some experimenting....

Hmmm. Turns out implementing compression was easier than I thought.

The main messageboards page, before compression: 250K
The main messageboards page, after compression: 25K
Compression time: 15 msec

This seems like a pretty big win to me. Time to roll the site again....

Compression is your friend!

Glad I could help :)

Hope I'm not speaking (typing) too soon, but wow.
From the uninitiated, that was good.
(blame me if I was)

Holy cow, did you guys supe up the website over the weekend, or what? Pages are loading much faster than before. Whatever happened, I say keep it up!

I have to agree, speed has definitely improved. Keep it coming, guys.

We haven't made any performance-related changes since we turned on compression. Though the new servers are on the way, and the doubled bandwidth (which got held up for a bit) should be coming online in the next few weeks....

Just testing something. We added a new server today.... Haven't done any performance tuning yet.

That was why the site was down yesterday and today? It's certainly going much faster now! Usually it's quite slow at night (what you Americans seem to call "day" then).

Thanks for the heads up and the performance boost! Every second quicker by the new posts is a bonus :)

The site has been up and down several times yesterday and today as we reboot various servers and move things around.

I'm hoping that when we're done (we have one more new server to add), things will be nice and speedy, at least on the page generation front. Speed of downloading will get another boost soon when we double our bandwidth.

Also, it appears that the mechanism that we use to keep our servers in sync with each other is having some problems right now. That means that messageboard threads may not be 100 percent up to date. If you make a post and don't see it, and also don't get a "the system administrators have been notified" error, you can probably assume that it will show up in the next hour or so.

This is of course my top priority to fix first thing in the morning tomorrow.

PS: Yes, I do get an email each and every time you see the "system administrators have been notified" message. Currently there's only one known post-eating bug, and I'm on its trail, but haven't yet found it. Thanks for your patience. :-)
