Swinging from a rope...

3.5/d20/OGL

Hello again,

Anybody have any idea if there's a rule that covers a rope-swing? One of my players wanted his character to swing from a rope to cross a large open gap in the floor... And everyone just looked puzzled, as no one could recall a rule that covered this... We looked up several skills (Climb, Use Rope, etc) but found nothing.

So I declared that a strength check was in order, with a roll of 6 or more granting success, a roll of 2 to 5 resulting that the character missed the opposite ledge and got stuck hanging right over the gap, and a roll of 1 resulting in letting go of the rope and falling into the gap.

This roll was modified by encumberance.

Any other ideas?

Treat it as a Jump check, with the rope giving a +4 or +6 bonus on the roll, and negating the possibility of a fall. Oh, and possibly removing the limit on the distance the character is able to Jump.

I'd give it a Jump check with a +2 bonus. It would also receive synergy from Use Rope.

You can swing as far as the rope is long, any distance beyond that is a jump check which is calculated as if your landspeed is twice normal.

Furthermore, you need to make a DC 15 jump check (or tumble) to land properly or suffer 1d6 subdual damage. This only applies if you take a swing + jump.

These are good suggestions.

I just thought I'd point out that some of press on Complete Scoundrel uses swinging on a rope as an example of the new rules they are introducing. It'll be interesting to see what they have to say.
