Does any one know of or have a ranger variant that focuses on two handed weapons instead of two-weapon fighting or archery? I was looking at the Green Knight prestige class (it’s based on Sir. Gawain and the Green Knight) in The Quintessential Ranger, and it focuses on aspects from the poem i.e. honor, a specially made great axe, a specially made breast plate, and nature. It got me really excited and now I’m in the process of making one. So, I thought I would see what the collected knowledge of these boards had in mind.
Thanks Fizz

I was thinking something along those lines. The Green Knight was just a cool class to me. It has several requirements, but I think it pays off in the end.
Requirements: +9 BAB, non-evil, weapon focus great axe, craft weaponsmithing 8, craft armorsmithing 8, must have woodland empathy, and have the honor of a green knight.
Over the 10 lvs: you grow to your race’s max height, you turn a little green, all your equipment turns green, you can craft a +4 keen VORPAL for FREE (its enchantment goes up every few lvs till 10 which is vorpal), +3 breast plate for free (which is super light), a holly club (yes holly not holy) which gives you some spells and allows you to reattach your head if decapitated, and last you get the Green Knight challenge. The challenge allows someone to cut your head off for the same blow against them with in one year (just like the poem). They also have a druid-ish, paladin-ish, vow of poverty-ish kind of thing.
What do you all think?

Wow. I had all but forgotten how that story went. Your post takes me back...
I think the class sounds like a lot of fun, and I see the appeal of stepping into the shoes of such a literary icon. If you can't find an official varient, you could simply create a feat chain to replace the TWF or archery ranger lines. I don't think that would be problematic balance-wise, as long as the feats are comparable in power to the ones in the established chains.

It is interesting that there is a "non-evil" alignment requirement for the class in question. In the 1984 movie "Sword of the Valiant" starring Sean Connery as the Green Knight, he (the character) is of a somewhat evil disposition. I don't know how closely the movie, which is the story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, mirrors the actual book. If you haven't seen the movie, you can probably find it at most places where you can buy DVD's.
...as a side note, I have a wonderful villain NPC based loosely off Connery's character in the movie (although he doesn't have any vorpal or head-replacing capabilities) and my players love him, save when he's killing their characters...
As far as classes & feats for using the kind of weaponry you're talking about, I don't know of any that is exactly what you want. I gave my 'Sir Connery the Green' NPC, 1 level in Ranger, the Fey-Touched template, and the rest Fighter levels to give him the feats to slaughter my players. And because he has the fey-touched template, he's immune to all 'mind affecting' effects, so most any spell or item requiring a Will save won't touch him.
Just a thought.

I know I am probably getting in on this discussion a little late. I have to say I love the concept. Did you reference the Quintessential Ranger? I have the Quintessential Ranger II which I thoroughly love. I have tried to get the first one but all the book stores I got to tell me that because they are out of print, I am out of luck. BTW I would be careful about posting Game stats on here.

Yeah this is in the Quintessential Ranger. It is a great book. I have enjoyed most of the Quintessential books that I've picked up, and would recommend most of them. The Quintessential Wizard is a book all people who play magic users should have. Any way, I love the idea of the Green Knight, because it is based heavily on the poem. However, I think he may be a better NPC than a PC, but who knows if it's played right. I really didn't think about the stats I posted (sorry mongoose). I left out alot and yet again the powers are from the poem. If they sue me then all of England better sue them. lol. Just Joking. I really enjoy Mongoose Publishing. Thanks for all the help.

I think the Green Knight would be a lovely class to base a campaign around. I think you are right about it being a Great NPC class. I think that if you had a really good player, he or she could probably pull it off as a PC. I loved the poem also, i am a product of the UK schooling system so I was subjected to that around my sixth year. It would be nice to have a campaign that echoes such a classic story.
