How long ago did the savage tide hit the IoD?

Savage Tide Adventure Path

OK, the Isle of Dread was ravaged by a Savage Tide, very long ago...a couple hundred years at least...(I don't have the magazine with the exact date with me at this time). And there are still Olman huts on the beaches, "...canoes rotting in the tides"? Even a lift built by "...Olmans who recently attempted to settle along this stretch of coastline..."

Are these structures from some recent attempt by the island natives to settle the region? I had thought that the Olmans were pretty much wiped out as a culture long, long, long ago. Perhaps the ruins found along the cliff path are from the current natives of the island and not Olman, unless the current natives are Olman decedents.

Having lived in equatorial jungle, I can say that no structure not made out of stone is going to last much more than maybe a year or two in the best situations, and I can't see rotting canoes still bobbing in the tides, especially after the storm, unless they came from the current natives on the island.

Can somebody refresh my memory? Are the current natives on the island 1) Olman? and 2) new arrivals or the decedents of the few Olman who survived the savage tide?

It was my understanding that they are Olman, and that they are decedents from the few that survived.

Then I guess the question becomes. "Are the non-stone ruins along the cliff pre or post Savage tide? It seems like they must be post. Which brings an interesting question about what was the ebb and flow of the survivors and their habitation of the island? Or maybe that is just the History major in me. ;-)

The first savage tide struck Thanaclan, the Olman capital city, about 1,000 years ago. The Olman who survived fled south and eventaully settled on the southern peninsula and islands. The Olman of the Seven Villages are the descendants of these surviviors, and they still refer to themselves as Olmans.

The ruined buildings along the stretch of beach at the base of the cliffs in "Here There Be Monsters" are the latest remnants of Olmans, dissatisfied with life in the southern peninsula, who tried to move north. They figured that the isolated beach would make a good defense against the monsters of the island interior, and built several lifts and trails up to the cliffs above so they could reach the interior to hunt and forage. They didn't bargain on being attacked by gargoyles. These ruins are not that old; likely not even a year old.

It may have been a bit obscure in the concluding part of the adventure, but a few descendents of the original Olman inhabitants of the Isle still live on the island's southeastern peninsula, which is protected by a wall that prevents the dinosaurs from ravaging the half-dozen villages there. I'm pretty certain that the abandoned settlements along the cliffs in this adventure were attempts to resettle that part of the island from Tanaroa and the other villages on the peninsula.

BTW the Olman civilization has fallen, but Olman peoples still live, on the Olman Islands at the mouth of the Gulf of Densac, in the Amedio Jungle, and in Hepmonaland.

Edit: Well, James gave you the official answer while I was working on this post.

James I have a seperate question regarding this, When the first Savage Tide was activated was Demogorgon affected In anyway? Because according to this adventure path Demogorgon's gettin' a major powerboost If the PC's don't screw up his plans. If he succeeds could he be elevated to diety? Inquiring minds want to know?

Demogorgon did not get a power boost with the first savage tide. Being the first, it was as much an experiment as it was anything else, and its primary goal was not to generate savage power for him to harvest but to mess up the Olmans and Thanaclan. (His reasons for doing so are discussed in issue #114 to some extent and moreso in issue #145).

If Demogorgon does manage to trigger a mass blast of savage tides at the end of the campaign, and if he does manage to harness that power, something good for him and bad for the rest of us will happen. What exactly that is doesn't really impact the campaign much at all, so for now it's gonna remain a secret.

Thanx James I believe I know what It Is, I'm not gonna say but what I am thinking of has been mentioned a number of times before concerning Demogorgon.
