Protection from Evil interaction in WC and AGoW (Spoiler)

Age of Worms Adventure Path

Are the monsters, specifically the outsiders and elementals in Zosiol and Icosiol's tomb considered conjured? What effect or spell binds them there? Can they be dismissed or banished, and if so, does it involve a caster level check against the Wind Dukes who put them there? I have already ran both of these adventures, and leaned more toward the "they wouldn't make a tough fight that you could bypass with a first-level spell" opinion. However, I am wondering about the interaction of Protection from Evil, Banishment, and Dismissal, specifically in AGoW. Did I rob the players of their abilities or would these simple spells have allowed the players passage through 50% of the fights?

I don't believe any of them are summoned. If they were, they wouldn't be there permanently. They're most likely there as the result of a Gate spell, or some sort of powerful Binding spell. Dismissal and Banishment would most likely work, as they're obviously not on their home plane, but not Protection from Evil.

It's been a while since I read through those adventures, as my group is at about the halfway point between them, but I don't recall anything stating that the creatures had been summoned. It seems like many of them (the dormant earth elemental in WC, for example) were bound into servitude after being defeated in the Chaos War... My guess would be that they were somehow pressed into service via some form of Geas or Quest spell. If I had to take it higher, I would maybe start hitting the Miracle, and Wish line to explain their presence (I mean, should it become important).

I don't think that it really matters HOW the Wind Dukes forced them to serve their punishment - all that is important is that they DID make them serve it.

As for Protection from Evil, Dismissal, and Banishment, I don't see any reason (unless it specifically states in the adventure text) as to why these spells couldn't be used. PoE effects evil creatures, and if they are evil, that is that. Dismissal and Banishment forces Outsiders out of the current plane of existance - if the creature is an Outsider, or otherwise meets the criteria of the spell, it should work.

Yo~

Clearly they are not "summoned," since they've been there thousands of years. So protection from evil's third effect (preventing bodily contact by summoned creatures) shouldn't work, although if the creatures are evil in alignment effects 1 & 2 will work.

Banishment etc. should work. It occurs to me that enslaved extraplanars might actually welcome banishment back to their home plane, although maybe the terms of their enslavement prevent them from negotiating for it. (Perhaps banishment does not release them from their obligation to serve?)

Interesting feedback. The Planar Binding (Conjuration/Calling)and Gate(second use) school of thought would appear to support the argument of prot. from evil working (since the creature IS summoned, possibly unable to break free because of high caster levels involved)while the first use of Gate and some of the enchantment spells appears to not support it(physically crafting a gate and enforcing magical servitude.) Then again, the bound creatures might be survivors from the fight with the Queen of the Chaos and are simply in place with a demand spell. To take this to the next level, what about the Broodfiends in DoaNA or Kyuss himself (good luck beating that SR).. Still kind of unsure, so I'm interested in paizo's take on this...

Planar Binding and Gate both have the Calling subtype rather than the Summoning subtype. The overview of Conjuration in the SRD or PHB makes it clear that these operate differently. Protection from Evil and the like specifically protects against Summoned creatures, not Called ones.

Summoning spells typically have a very short duration. Most extraplanar creatures in WC and AGoW have been in place for centuries.

Kyuss is from the Material Plane, so Banishment probably wouldn't accomplish much.
