Shouldn't the illusory wall in D14 in HoHR and the silence spell in the pit trap in D10 grant the PCs a Will Save?

The illusionary wall should have a save DC of 16 if interacted with. The silence spell on the other hand, in an area affect and not targetted on the PC. As such it does not give a save.

Hope that helps

As for the wall: Only if interacted with. Being as it's the floor of a pit, nobody's going to be interacting with it unless they fall through it (at which point it's proven to that PC that it's an illusion), so it's kinda moot.

As for the silence, no. It only allows a save if it's targetted on a player.

There are two illusory walls.

The one halfway down the pit in D10 is not meant to deceive the PC that falls in, but (in combo with silence) to fool his comrades, who will look in, see that the victim is not at the bottom of the apparently 30 foot deep pit, and jump to conclusions (teleported away? disintegrated? got out by a secret door?). This in turn may delay aid to the poor fellow impaled on the spikes below, whose cries for help can't be heard because of the silence spell, or may lead the party to leave him behind and proceed through the dungeon in hopes of finding "where he got teleported to." If the PCs at the top interact with it (e.g. drop a rock or lower a rope) they are likely to notice that the "floor" doesn't stop anyone and have a chance to see through the illusion.

The other illusionary wall (D14) screens the eastern part of the room, and thus the door to D15, from view. Since this makes D14 look just like the three D11 rooms, the players may be fooled into leaving the room after rifling the wardrobe. They won't have a chance to make the will save unless they probe carefully (e.g. searching the wall for a secret door) or accidentally bump into it.

Yep.

When the group's rogue fell into the trap, he spontaneously sent his climbing rope (the one they found TFoE) up to attach on anything it could. The depth between the illusionary floor and the actual one is 40 ft. (IIRC), so the others saw his rope float through the ground and quickly came to the right conclusion...

With regards to the wall in D14, if a PC searches do they automatically realize that the wall is fake once they touch the wall, or does it still require a Will Save to realize?

The way I read the spell, if they touch the wall, they'll realize its not there, but they need to make a Will save in order to see through it.

That's how I would play it.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Here's the question... would it be too mean to, once the PC falls into the pit, say, "Okay... now, roll two will saves and a fort save," and no matter what he gets, start laughing? It would make all of the other PCs start crapping their pants when they look down and see nothing.

LOL!
