Your favorite character class.

I was just wanting to see how much of the paizo community plays which classes. I would also like to hear of your favorite characters you made. I myself love the wizard class just for the fact of how many spells you can have. My favorite character to date has to be my sun elf wizard in FR who specializes in air magic.

Back in the days when I used to be a player (I DM now), I had a soft spot for Rangers. I liked them because I had the feeling of being self-suficient (say, if the rest of the group was killed). They could fight pretty good, hunt for food, find their way back home, and even cast a few spells.

One of my favorite characters was a Ranger named Araman. He would always go on adventures with his tarnished +1 Chainmail and his trusty Two-Handed Sword.

Yeah Rangers are the best, kicks @zz like a fighter, ties with rouges for stealthiness, a great selection of skillswith plenty of skill points, spells all-be-it a limited selection still darn useful...

my fav ranger was Gavin(2nd ed), got himself pulled into kind of a save all realities gig, kind of stargateish, by the end of the campaign, this poor ranger, which was only suppose to be used to help teach some new players, had become the leader of the group, and savior of many...my wife was the GM, and by the time the newbies got the hangof the rule she decided that Gavin must stay, who am I to disappoint the wife <:|

>>I was just wanting to see how much of the paizo community plays which classes. (snip...)

I've played every class...hasn't everyone...but I'd say the Bard is my favorite. No, they're not the best spellcasters or the best fighters or the best skill freaks, but they're fairly good at just about everything, so they can play many roles. I like having lots of options, plus their unique Bard skills can be really useful. Wizards are my second favorite. Again, because of their options. Of course they can't fight and don't have many skills, but they have good skills, IMHO, with all Knowledge skills, and they can do ANYTHING if they get a chance to cast a spell (assuming they survive long enough, that is).

Ranger is definitely my second-favorite class, right behind the Rogue.

I don't need spells, because I can use wands and scrolls (which I can steal as easily as find). I don't need the fighter's base atk progression or armor, because I sneak around willy-nilly until there's a brilliant opening, sneak attack for plenty of damage, then disappear again. No trap can stop me, no bonds can hold me (and a silence affect doesn't change that), and I can smooth-talk through anything. The only thing that's missing is an Animal Companion, which I really only want to help me flank. I am a silent assassin, an impeccable diplomat. I am the terror that flaps in the night...

Maybe not that last thing.

What I really love, though, almost as much as playing a rogue, is seeing a group play a campaign from 1st-10th level, never straying from the core classes, and ending up with a group of PCs that could take on any prestige-classed munchkin party and win, almost by sheer force of roleplay alone. That's what warms the cockles of my cold, stony heart.

What is a cockle, anyway? Does the MM have stats for those?

I always liked rogues and clerics. If I had to pick.....rogues. They along well in cities, great personalities, skill points out the wazoo, and if all else fails, sneak attack! My current character is probably one of my favorites: Drigan Stonekey, locksmith by profession. rogue5/fighter4, wields a greatsword (2d6+3d6 SA). me likes. But I have always liked clerics, even back in 79'. Maybe I'll do my next character as a rogue/cleric......

You don't need an animal companion...wand of summon monster!!!! I am the cold-sore on the lip of crime!!

Ah, yes...Wand of Summon Monster. How could I forget? Of course, summoned monsters aren't always as well-trained as an animal companion would be...maybe I need to take a level of Druid, or something. Oi...I'm getting dangerously close to twinking for the sake of twinkage...

Hmm. Sake of Twinkage...a rice-wine granting a temporary bonus to all rolls...I'll have to write that down...

I really like the new bard.

I think they are the most similar to the heroes of myth and folklore, some magical ability, fighting skill, cunning (as reflected in skill points), the ability to heal, and the use of song and poetry to weave magic. These are all key attributes of the heroes of the Celts, the Finns, the Norse, among others.

My favorite was an elven bard named Kyravahne. But I think the group I was playing with was a bigger factor than the class choice.

Rogues. I'm a skill nerd and I love the skill points. I love that they can fit into any gap in the party and do what needs to be done. Of course sneak attack never hurts. I've also always been a fan of clerics and one of my favorite characters was a rogue/cleric of Olidamara.

Clerics. Hands down. Nothing says love like a 20th-level cleric casting destruction on the enemies of the faith, followed immediately by a maximized flame strike. Harm is also my friend - so is sunburst, mass cure critical wounds, true seeing, implosion, dimensional lock, holy word, resurrection, planar ally...and so on. Being able to lay the smack down with a mace doesn't hurt either.

Clerics!! I like 'em for the role-playing opportunities having to adhere to a certain faith presents.

Cockle: Diminutive aberration, 5 HD, CR 8; Special Attack- Immolate Heart

Oh, and I love all classes, but have to say arcanists (particularly wizards) appeal to me the most; I just think they are awesome in both role-play and roll-play.

Wizards! Arcane spells and item creation, lots of knowledge skills, and the mystique of dusty tomes and ink-stained fingers. Plus, at low levels, nothing creates "role-play opportunity" better than a character that's as fragile as a porcelain candy dish.

Wizards rule D&D! What class can compete with the ability know 3/4 of every spell in the Player's Handbook? My favorite character of all time was a Wiz/Clr/Mystic Theurge. It was a monty haul campaign; the DM gave us the option to be any race with +4 level adjustment but I chose a measly old human so he eventually turned my Mystic levels into his invented 'Disciple of Boccob' class which gave ability bonuses the ability to use armor freely and more. Despite the character's ultimate versatility, she sucked at offense; eventually ended up completely ignoring fireballs in favor of cure spells combined with Spectral hand. (the best combo available to the Mystic Theurge, btw)

Straight up Fighter or Barbarian. Nothing is more emotionally satisfying than a good ol' fashioned monster beat-down. See monster - hit monster!

Sure spells and skills are useful and all, but going toe-to-toe with a demon and winning sure feels good!

But only if I can be a celestial half-illithid winged dire smurf.

Honestly, I want to say wizard, but I think I'm going to surprise myself and go rogue. I remember when I first got ye old redbook, I looked at the classes and I thought "wtf! The thief only has a d4 HD. I must not understand how poweful the class is if it's hp are that low." I made a thief and learned that balance was not a highly prized commodity in OD&D...

Nonetheless, multi-classed thieves in 2e and straight rogues in 3e are the best. They're decent in combat and great outside it. It's probably the most versitile class in the game (with the fighter a close second).

I am currently playing a 3rd edition druid monk and I must say of all the different characters I've tried this has to be my fave so far. I get really cool spells, wild shape, multi attacks[bare handed no less]wear no armor yet rival some of our groups fighters and can out run, out punch, out dodge, out tumble, out jump and out wit just about anything we meet.
Hartdegen Archer aka The Mist of Fargorn.

I've played many, many characters over the years (blue box basic set, circa 1978). The ones that stand out in my memory were a CN Wizard with a penchant for taking (and wearing) trophies, an oh-so-happy-to-be-alive cleric of Vishnu who loved to "smash badness," An elven fighter/thief who married a beautiful princess (and skulked away in the night when being royalty got dull)...

And a Ranger. Jenex Benethorne was the character to whom I felt the strongest connection. He died, in the grand tradition of the game, facing down a Great Wyrm, as the last party member standing. We all decided that surely the last blow he had struck as the beast sunk its teeth into him MUST have been fatal.

Now I have taught the game to my kids. My daughter, 14, plays a bard. My son, 11, has taken up the ranger's mantle, but with his own... quirkiness.

When he told me he wanted to play a halfling ranger, I thought, "Oh, no, that's the kind of oddball combination that could test even the more well-developed role-players." But I let him do it, and only gave him minimal input in making his choices of skills and feats. He chose undead as his favored enemy (we both love zombie movies). A little weapon finesse boosted his combat worthiness, and now at second level he has taken two-weapon combat, and he is a tiny, silent and unseen whirlwind of doom.

Halfling Rangers Rock.

Thank you. I'll be sure to use that in a future game; some of my players will find it horribly amusing, as do I. The other players...well, they don't have a sense of humour anyway. :)

Despite my professed love for rogues and rangers, I do enjoy the Warlock class on a lark. It's got a lot of very interesting things going on about it...and it drives a DM crazy sometimes.

Sovereign Court

When i was playing 2nd ed.DnD, i liked thieves (now called Rogues, go figure). In the now rare times i play 3.5 its the Warlock or the Fighter. For some reason i've always hated the idea of prestige classes and so never used them.

I like a Rogue 4/Fighter 4/Sorcerer 12 mix of usually Elven racial heritage.

With a character like this I research spells that will assist with archery and stealth. There are some already but I look to create spells similar to the arcane archer. I dislike prestige classes, though.

Oh were to start. My favorit character class has to be the Warlock. Now my favorit character builds are 5 levels of artificer and 15 levels of wizard. 5 levels of rouge and then 15 levels of fighter is one that I have done.

I had a player drive me crazy with a warlock. Bat swarms and Shatter at low levels in the had of a creative player is nerve-wracking.

Hell yeah!

Heavy armor, good hp, good base attack, solid saves, awesome spells, and the domain powers. And turning, and all the feats pertaining to turning. Clerics r0xx0r.

I personally also enjoy playing a zealot, and/or a self-rigtheous jerk(much like me in real life). Clerics lend themselves to zealotry and over the top RPing.

I feel the need to share since no one else had said it yet - Psychic Warrior! And Psion! And Wilder! ;P If there are no psionics in the game though, I have to go Cleric.

Peace

My most memorable character would have to be a Half-Ogre Fighter4/Cleric5 named Smash Irontree. He was a lovable cuss who really liked his whip. He, sadly, was forced to leave his party after he offended a Dwarven LG Cleric by raising all the cute little kobolds after we had finished killing them and using them as a kinda toy-soldier set. (It was a good battle and he just couldn't bear to see it end...) In the resulting, umm, misunderstanding, the party ended up expending more energy and magic trying to stop me from killing the Dwarf then they did killing the horde of Kobolds I was playing with. Ah, that was an exit... *sighs wistfully*

Its my belief that when you're a true newbie, and you're handed the handbook and shown the classes, the very first one you pick will be the one you're most interested and most in tune with. For me it was rogue. I've played them all and had fun with them all, but at the end of the day I'm still a rogue at heart. Mind you I still haven't figured out how to stop myself grinning when the DM tells the friendly group paladin that for some reason the 250 gp he had in his pocket has shrunk to 15 and he can no longer afford a round of ales. Alas.

Overall, I must say my favorite is the Cleric. This is probably because my most memorable character ever was a gnome cleric of Garl Glittergold. He started out innocent and unassuming, but after some experience with the world he became a bit more battle-hardened and was the bane of wickedness everywhere. He never lost his lighthearted outlook on life, though.

My second-favorite has got to be bard. My Dwarven bard was totally pimp.

Well I will have to say that my favorite class of all time would have to be the Ranger because much like ultradan and many others with their reasoning. Being self-sufficient is awsome and the can sneak like a rouge but have the attack power of a fighter.

My favorite character of all time would have to be the first one i ever played Jherrith the ranger

Liberty's Edge

I'm sorry nobody mentionned the paladin.

I really enjoy playing paladins, but they are quite difficult to play (I try not to play the paladin as a stupid moralist, but as a parangon of goodness, who tries to be right and go by the law, and who may sometimes be a kind of pain in the ars for his fellow friends).

It's very difficult to say to the other players : "well, alright, this guy assaulted us and almost killed us, but he has to be judged for that : you can't apply a homemade justice !",
but it can provide lots of good roleplay.
And I had that paladin wearing long hair, speaking slowly with a soft, gentle and cool voice, always smoking his halfling's weed and who enjoyed a good glass of beer.

I also like to play wizards (with 2-3 levels of rogue).

Wiz and paladins are really my favourite classes.

I had a 1/2 ogre character named Smash too!!! and I thought I was being unique

Scarab Sages

When I really think about it, my favorite class would have to be a straight forward fighter. In the depths of my charcoal colored soul, I like the simple life of walking around hitting things.

I also like paladins. The last paladin I played was like that kid in high school who was on the student council, homecoming court, captain of the football team ( I was a jock in high school go figure). He was very likeable, encouraged other in the party (usually to follow him into some evil hole)kind of like a cheerleader. He had a habit of sleeping with pretty barmaids & drink alchohol with the boys, often buying a round for the house (who says a LG means celibate & sober). He was also very vain (got trapped in a mirror with an evil reflection of himself because of his vainity.

I also like the bard class. The first 3.0 D&D character I made was a gnome bard Neilin Bobb, I thougt it was the most wild combo I could come up with at the time. (When bard became a gnomes favorite class I already knew it worked well). The moment my gnome bard cast CLW for the first time, all doubts about the characters usefullness were erased. Neilin became the parties cook, singing songs and telling stories arround the camp fire. A clever player can create a lot of memerable moments with the versatility of a bard.

I got to agree. My default charachter is usually a dwarf fighters. (I also have an affinity for dwarves). I used play football when I was younger. I like to hit things too!

Sovereign Court

Cleric. The most powerful class, but somewhat difficult to role-play. If you can get along with the rest of your party, the cleric's decent BAB, 2 good saves, good armour, pretty good HP, great spells, and spontaneous casting make it quite powerful. The only problem with the cleric is that usually you need four good ability scores: Str, Con, Wis, & Cha. A bit hard to get if you're rolling 4d6.

Liberty's Edge

Ranger...
Sneaky trackers, experianced woodsmen, competent fighters, and if need be at mid level not to bad spellcasters, and with 3.5 combat style....

game on, in the woods

Any and all 3.0/3.5 classes. Except the druid -- ewwww!

I just love the flexibility of the new system; generic characters are a thing of the past :)

Jack

PS right now it's the Warlock, for the novelty :)

I used to like ranger, then fell in love with rogues, which I thought was the best class ever. Then I discovered the scout, which is better than both the ranger and the rogue. It could very easily replace both. It's like the next step in the evolution of both classes. Never again will there ever be a need for a rogue or a ranger in a party again.

And when I swing the hammer of justice and smite the wicked, let no man judge me, for my judgment will come from the very gods themselves" - Sir Kaikillah, Paladin of the order of Rightous Might (cause we all know might makes right)

My fave class is Rogue. All those skill points, very in a combat-support role, Stealth, all that and can use magic devices too (always maximise your Use Magic Device!). :)

I also really like the Ranger, but my all time fav is a Ranger / Rogue multiclass. I love the stealthy, scout, tracker, woodsman angle this provides. Oh, and for me, he has to go down the archer combat style path. Very Robin Hood'ish ...

By the way, someone mentioned a Scout. What is that? Is that a Prestige Class or something from one of the suppliment books like Complete Warrior or something?

Thanks!

Its a 1-20 class in Complete Adventurer. If you like Ranger/Rogue combos I think you'd really like the Scout.

Thanks - I'll have to check it out. Quick question: I don't have any of the Complete ... books - what is a 1-20 class? Are these actual new classes?

A 1-20 class is a class that is described from levels 1-20 as opposed to prestige classes whichare typically show 3, 5, or 10 levels of development.

Kyr wrote:

In other words, effectively a new base class akin to the core classes presented in the Player's Handbook. You don't need prerequisites like you have for PrCs. You can take your first level in the class and progress all the way up to level 20. All multiclassing rules apply to them just as they do to the classes presented in the Player's Handbook.

I sometimes like to take new races and give them new favored classes that use some of these new classes or give races an secondary favored class just to mix things up a bit.

Marc Radle wrote:

Note that the errata for Complete Adventurer gives scouts Disable Device as a class skill and clarifies the skirmish class feature.

Rogue, Definately Rogue! It was my first, and God help me, will probably be my last as well. I started back in 1984 as a cohort in my Cousin's campaign because my Mom told my siblings "Let your brother Play with you kids!" They thought <give him thief... he's stupid... he'll be dead in 5 minutes>, but two hours later, I was lvl 3 and the Fighter, Cleric, Wizard, and 2nd Fighter were all dead! (and i had their gold)

Some classes just come naturally I guess! But I also like the versatility a Druid offers. You can heal, fight, cast offensive, cast defensive, cast utility, have a companion to help you out, wildshape to handle almost any situation... Slap a big red "S" on your chest and defend nature! They even hate undead... It's a win-win class!

Example: my umpteenth lvl Druid casts animal growth on his Black Bear companion, turning him Dire Bear size, then slaps him w/ rusting grasp and points at the enemy Cleric and says attack! Wildshapes into a giant Eagle and flys up to get an aerial view of the battle. Thanks to natural spell, if the bear needs back-up, I'm just a "Call lightning" away!

I know technically it is not a class, but I love playing Gish(specifically Dwarven transmuter) otherwise a cleric of Corellon Larethian.
I truly enjoy waging war on the followers of Gruumsh.

my first ever character back in the red book days was a thief, then i took a cleric all the way thru 1st to 36th lvl. in ad&d i had a slew of paladins(4 or 5) after that were all linked by chrysomer( a intelligent holy sword from egg of the phoenix i believe). i always DM now but all in all i haveta say rogue is my favorite class. im always happy when one of my players decides to run one.
