Tree of Shackled Souls and dimension lock

Shackled City Adventure Path

Shebeleth can't use his scroll of gate to call a glabrezu if the PC's have wiped out the Flamewarders because the Tree radiates a dimension lock and thus prevents the gate. Also, the PHB isn't very clear about whether or not a dimension lock prevents summoning, which would screw up the tactics of Thearynn and Frejia as well. The PHB says something about a dimension lock not preventing summoned creature from returning at the end of the summons duration but not if the spell explicitly prevents the summoning during the lock.

summon monster is pretty clear on the fact that the summoned creatures are extraplanar. Since dimensional lock doesn't allow any form of extraplanar travel, inside the spell's area. I'd say it blocks summon monster too. creatures summoned outside the spell's area can enter and leave it without any problem.

The text in the PHB is a copy of the lesser spell: dimensional Anchor. The difference is that dimensional lock affects every creature within an area, rather than creatures touched by the ray attack. I'm guessing that they forgot to include the summon spell in the text.

If that's the case, then the tactics for two of the Cagewrights won't work as written. Both Freija and Thearynn use the various Summon Monster spells against the PC's And Shebeleth can't use his scroll of gate to call a glabrezu. Speaking of that scroll, it's not listed under Shebeleth's possessions, but only in the text block for the description of the room where the defense is mounted, C20, I think.

I already ran the encounter with Freija and had her doing the summoning, so I will stick to letting things be summoned around the tree. The players won't know unless I tell them. Maybe the tree radiates an effect similar to a dimension lock, but not really a dimension lock.

I've been thinking about this some more...

In terms of game effect, a summon monster spell is not really different from a spiritual weapon or fireball spell.
Basically, it's just a spell that can potentially damage an oponent. And why would a summon monster not work, while a summon nature's ally does?

Confusing eh? I think we should call in the big guns. Í mailed the question to the sage.

Interesting. I just finished reading over the final adventure, and Skullrot is protected by an "effect similar to a dimension lock spell". The description of the effect gives all the standard stuff barred by dimension lock, and specifically states that summoning is NOT prevented, nor are summoned creatures prevented from returning after the duration of the summon spell expires.

Any word from the sage on this one Chef?

The Fiery Sanctum should be treated the same way as the dimensional lock effect around Skullrot. It essentially blocks access via teleportation and planar travel (or escape by these means), but doesn't impact summoning or calling effects at all.

Keeriv, the shator demodand with Shebeleth, is stated to use among others blink in the Tactics section. This is not possible with the dimensional lock effect radiated from the Tree of Shackled Souls.

I also ruled that blink doesn't work either... nor do bags of holding etc

While it's true that a dimensional lock could potentially block extradimensional storage items, such as bag of holding or quiver of Ehlonna, the wording of the spell is not clear on this particular issue. Since the wording of the spell is that it creates an "emerald barrier that completely blocks extradimensional travel" you could argue that a bag of holding does not constitute extradimensional travel, since it mostly involves items. The spell also says that it "[does not] block extradimensional perception or attack forms" nor does it "prevent summoned creatures from disappearing at the end of a summoning spell". This indicates that the spell is specifically designed to block the extradimensional movement supplied by the spells listed, and similar spells, while still allowing other forms of extradimensional effects that does not allow characters to move between dimensions. Therefore, for practical reasons, I think I will still allow extradimensional storage items to work.

From my understanding of the spells, "Summon" spells (as opposed to "Gate" and spells that explicitly summon a specific creature) are, in fact, spells that take the raw essence of magic and/or nature and weave it into a created "ideal being" that is, for a incredibly short time (a few rounds), entirely real.

So, in other words, Summon Monster won't be pulling -actual- monsters away from some location, but is in fact -creating- a monster from scratch.

Evidence for this includes the fact that Summon Monster is a Conjuration (summoning) spell, whereas Gate is a Conjuration (creation or calling) spell. In addition, the rules state that when a summoned creature is "killed" it isn't really killed, it's form just takes 24 hours to recoalese, during which time that particular monster can not be summoned again.

I could be entirely wrong though.
