Heroes of Battle with Encounter at Blackwall Keep?

Age of Worms Adventure Path

Can someone who ran EaBK give a quick summary of how the 30+ lizardfolk vs ~20 Human/PC battle went?

How could I tweak the adventure to use some tools from Heroes of Battle? What about a commander effect for the head lizardfolk in the battle? (Sorry, I don't have the mag in front of me and can't remember his name.) How could I incorporate victory points? IIRC the lizardfolk will retreat from the keep if they lose 10 men or their commander and will retreat to the mistmarsh if they lose 20 men or 10 men and their commander. Would anyone recommend replacing this with morale checks? Any suggestions for doing this?

My party is almost done with 3FoE (another week or two left) and I'm not ready yet for this encounter. I may throw in some filler side-treks in Diamond Lake to ensure we stay behind the Eberron conversion releases.

While I did not use HoB, I can tell you how our encounter went. First off, the group I'm DM'ing consists of 7 characters of 4th/5th level, so I scaled the encounter to make it 38 lizard folk, and their two leaders, replacing the 4th level warrior with a 4th level barbarian.

Once the PC's were noticed, two groups of 5 lizard folk closed to them, while two groups worked on the door, and two groups worked on the balcony. The druid's group and the barbarian's group hung back. The party wizard took out one group on the door with a fireball. Ditto the second group. He did this after having altered self into a mephit capable of flight, thus he was safely above the combat. Meanwhile, the party tanks began dealing with the two melee groups. Simultaneously, the party rogue and a sorcerer D. doored (via an ability the rogue has as a shadow walker) to the top of the tower, and began raining arrows/spells down upon the lizard folk climbing the balcony.

Meanwhile, the flying wizard cast a widened fireball, taking out the barbarian's group, though not the barbarian himself.

In the end, 29 lizard folk died, plus the druid. Nine fled, plus the barbarian. One tower guard died. No PC fatalities.

I was not impressed with the difficulty level of this encounter.

Thanks, that description helps. What race is the alter self casting wizard?

That's a pretty sneaky use of a 2nd-level spell to mimic the effects of a 3rd level spell. Although I guess the caster did pay the +1 LA to be an aasimar or tiefling, which is the race I am assuming they are playing. And I take it the caster chose earth mephit?

He is actually playing a fire genasi, which he did pay the LA for, and he was an ice mephit at the time. You're right, very sneaky. I'll definately be looking for a way for it to come and bite him on the backside.

I didn't run EaBK with HoB, but I did run an invasion of Thronehold (in Eberron) by Githyanki with it. I must say that the flowchart system works well, but victory points aren't really my thing. I think that in my situation they were more of a gimmick than anything else. But, the battle ended with the player's saving the day right in time, so I guess it worked out OK.

My girlfriend calls my D&D group my "Pod". At first I thought it was sorta offensive but now I kinda like it. So anyway my pod is 3 5th level characters and 1 4the level (and 1 5th level NPC cleric). I increased it to 60 lizardfolk. They were attacked by 4 groups of 5 lizardfolk right off the bat. Allustan blew one up before he teleported. They just cut right through the lizardfolk. Of the 60, 19 survived by the scales of their chiny chin chins!!! This was not a tough encounter and it seems I am underestimating my two fighters! I wonder how they will fare if the NPC cleric died??? (evil laugh).....
