Somewhere deep in the Russian wastes north of Moscow, a great upheaval of dark power has taken place. A well-established vampire lord, undisputed ruler of his domain for over four centuries, has been overthrown and murdered by a powerful thrall, Gregor Petrovich. With the loss of their master, the disciples, servants, and followers have either abandoned Gregor's cause, or been murdered by the new master's few supporters. Much weakened, Gregor nurses his wounds in his master's former castle.

This changing of the ranks has provided something of an opportunity. Seven years ago, Gregor's master abducted the famous Italian painter, Armino Pasquarelli. Although Gregor murdered most of his master's slaves and cattle, he has kept Armino to paint one final portrait. When this portrait is completed, the artist will be drained of his blood and fed to the wolves.

The party has been hired to infiltrate a vampire's castle and rescue an old painter.

Margaretha Geertruida Zelle MacLeod is an exotic dancer famous throughout Western Europe. For the past six years, she has gained great acclaim under the stage name, Mata Hari. She performs in “authentic” Eastern costumes that are both ornately decorated and extremely revealing. Her routines combine exotic eastern dances she nlearned in the Dutch East Indies with her own individual style. Her popularity stems from both the European fascination with all things oriental and her willingness to shed off clothing on stage.

In Winter of 1911, Mata Hari is performing in La Scala Theatre in Milan, Italy. There she captured the eye of a certain Prince Carlo and was invited to do a private rendition of Salome in his manor. Upon her return, she complained of general malaise and was soon too ill to continue performing.

Adventure Summary
Mata Hari's booking agent, Gabriel Astruc, alarmed at the possible breach of contract with La Scala and disturbed by the nature of Mata Hari's illness, contacts the hunters to look into the matter. The party soon learns that Prince Carlo is a vampire who has become obsessed with the famous dancer. He is also intrigued by the fact that Mata Hari's social circle includes several highly placed military officers, politicians and industrialists. He has thus decided to convert Mata Hari into a vampire under his control. Though
her, he intends to extend his influence throughout Europe.

Seven centuries ago, the Christian kingdoms of Denmark, Poland, and Sweden conducted a series of crusades against the pagan lands around the shores of the Baltic Sea. These kingdoms were aided by Catholic military orders from Germany. When the Latgalian tribe decided to side with the crusaders, their leaders converted from the Eastern Orthodox church to Roman Catholicism. However, there were those among the tribe that still clung to their traditional religion and refused baptism. The medicine man Izcacus was one of the pagans who resisted the crusaders, and he paid a terrible price for it.
