By the 31st Century, the Milky Way Galaxy has been mapped and explored by mankind using starships powered by the incredible warp space drive. This time of galactic exploration, conquest, and colonization is known as the Infinite Age. The Milky Way Galaxy is roughly 100,000 light years in diameter and contains roughly 200 billion star systems. The majority of these systems lie in the dense Core region. The Galaxy is divided into four equal quadrants: The Orion Quadrant, the Sagittarius Quadrant, the Centaurus Quadrant, and the Perseus Quadrant.

The Orion Quadrant is the home of the Sol System and Earth. The star systems around Earth were the first colonized and are now heavily populated Core Worlds. These colonies are still owned by the traditional governments of Earth such as the U.S., China, European Union, Japan and others. Collectively, these worlds and their governments are called the Old Earth Empires. They are constantly embroiled in petty wars and strife, but still maintain uneasy relations with both the Interstellar Federation and the Pan-Solar Empire.

The Perseus Quadrant is home to the Interstellar Federation. The Federation is a strong union of former colonies that have gained their independence from Earth. The government is a Republican Monarchy with a President being elected for life. For the most part, the Federation is benevolent and fair in their government and laws. Citizens of the Federation enjoy a high standard of living.

The tyrannical Pan-Solar Empire governs most of the Sagittarius Quadrant. The Empire, like the Federation, is also comprised of old colony worlds. Unlike the Federation, they did not gain their independence. Instead, the mad Emperor Gregor Veroveren, who has ruled his quadrant with an iron fist for more than 300 Solar Years, conquered them. The Worlds of the Empire have all been raped of their natural resources to fuel the huge military/industrial complex of the Imperial Armed Forces. Citizens of the Empire live in squalid misery with no human rights. They view the Federation with jealous eyes. It is the Empire's ultimate goal to conquer the Federation and take its wealth.

The Centaurus Quadrant is home to many new Federation colonies and countless small independent governments. It is on the edge of explored space and most of the new planets are being discovered there. For this reason, it is called the Frontier. The Centaurus Quadrant is home to pirates and bandits and is considered a wild area of space. Many independent freighters try their luck against both the Empire raids and bandit piracy to deliver goods back and forth between the colonies and the Federation and the Old Earth Empires.

In all, the Galaxy supports an estimated 4.9 trillion human inhabitants on over 150,000 worlds worlds, and expanding. Core worlds are heavily industrialized worlds with populations exceeding ten billion. These were some of the first worlds colonized during man's expansion into space. There are less than 1000 Core Worlds in the Galaxy. Core Worlds are usually not self-sufficient and rely on supplies and resources from the outer Colony Worlds. Colony Worlds are relatively recently discovered worlds that are self-sufficient in terms of population, but have difficulty producing high-end goods. Some Colony Worlds have been settled for over 400 years and are on the verge of becoming galactic powers in their own right. Recently colonized worlds on the Galactic Frontier are heavily dependent on other worlds for technology and supplies. Their populations usually number less than one million, often in the thousands.

Federation Rangers are tasked to enforce Federation law in the Galactic Frontier and on Federation Colonies and Associate Worlds. They have no jurisdiction on Federation member worlds. There, Federation AstroPol maintains bases for permanent law enforcement.

Lightspeed IF is a Role-Playing Game set in the Galaxy of the 31st Century, a period known in the Infinite Futures game system as the Infinite Age. This is a time of exploration and adventure. The conflicts of the Core Wars are over and the Galaxy is at peace, though old animosities simmer just below the surface and new rivalries threaten to flare into conflict. Space Pirates
Vast fortunes are being made by extracting the many resources of the worlds of the Fringe, and doing so where there is little law and even less oversight from the otherwise watchful eyes of the governments back home in the Core Worlds. Yet, while vast sums of wealth are being traded back and forth, amongst the few, the vast bulk of the population out in the Fringe lives in abject poverty, sometimes even in slavery.

Vast fortunes existing with little law and oversight mixed with a dash of abject poverty for the many - it is a heady mixture. And one of the things that mixture produces is piracy. The allure of seizing a wealthy cargo and becoming instantly rich (or at least well-off for a time) succors many. And if they make the attempt, and survive the results, the dream can even become true. (Until the day the Star Marshals come knocking on your door, of course.)

While pirates are commonly known for being an independent lot, in actuality, a surprisingly large amount of the piracy that occurs is sponsored piracy. Of this, the most common type is corporate piracy - pirates given a free hand to seize as much as they can grab of all assets of the sponsor's rivals (whether rivals corporate, government, or civilian). And since in the Fringe, the corporations are oft the most sizable force of law in the region, not the government, that can wind up being a very free hand indeed. As long as you are caught somewhere where the sponsor has influence, that is, and not somewhere controlled exclusively by a rival power.

These corporate privateers may, from time to time, be tasked by the sponsor with seizing a particular cargo, but they are mostly given free reign to act as they normally would as pirates, except with an extremely favored list of people to hit (and a list of friends not to hit), with bonus pay for hitting certain targeted goals, such as taking X amount from a certain corporate rival and their agents.

However, privateers are far from the only pirates operating within the Fringe. On the other side of things are those awful individuals that have given piracy its feared reputations - the most depraved, the most foul in their deeds and action. Slavers, killers and kidnappers, these pirates are well-known for boarding ships in the deeps of space and raping, torturing, and killing all on board. They prey on small trade ships and transports, but have also been known to raid outlying outposts and colonies with equally brutal force and carnage. There are countless bands of these pirates, some as small as a few hard individuals, or as large as the Pirate Lords of the outer belts, with thousands of blackguards and hundreds of ships within their company. Some of these Pirate Lords have made such a name for themselves that they are even known by the common citizens back on the Core Worlds. Names such a Black-Eyed Pete and the pirate queen Morgan the Red-Handed. Others, though, are just nameless killers and raiders, seeking a quick path to riches within the backdrop of the hard life within the hard part of the galaxy that is the space frontier.

The Star Marshals
The Federation is a union of a number of planets and allied species of various kinds. Federation Known Space is a territory shaped a lot like an egg. The most advanced part of Known Space, the Core Worlds, are the yoke, while the expanse beyond that yoke is an untamed wilderness called The Fringe. And beyond the Fringe lies the Unknown.

The Fringe is largely a lawless place, despite being nominally under Federation control. While influence from the Federation planets does exist, that influence is spread too thin and to wide. At the same time, the many worlds of the Fringe hold the promise of freedom and vast stores of unspoiled resources ready for the taking. In such a place, the lawless thrive. Vast fortunes are made...by the pirate and mercenary bands that prey on the weak and helpless. Not to mention the corporate conglomerates, who exploit their workers in any number of ways, far from the watchful eye of the Federation enforcement agencies.

In this dangerous realm, small colonies largely depend upon the meager resources their corporate sponsors choose to send them, or in some cases must hire their own militias and protection at an expense that they can ill-afford. Concepts such as “Law and Order” are thus thought as something that is bought and sold, going to the highest bidder.

In such a realm, there is little respect and less money dedicated to active police. And most of what few such organizations there are thought of as ineffectual at best, corrupt or incompetent at worst. They are also underpaid and overworked. There are, though, a dedicated few who still try to keep the peace and bring law and order to the outlaw worlds of this wild region – the famed Star Marshals.

The Star Marshals are an elite law enforcement outfit under the nominal control of the Federation. The core stated goal of the Star Marshals is to keep the Fringe safe from the various criminal elements that infest it.

However, their true goal is to keep the chaos and crime of the outer regions from spilling back into the Core Worlds. Their job is immense and never-ending, policing a huge amount of space with scant resources and even scanter aid from both the Core Worlds and the Fringe (who tend to resent outside influence on their territory, except during the immediate aftermath of a terrible crime that they are ill-equipped to handle).

Thus each day the fearless men and woman of the Star Marshals must battle a tide of never-ending lawlessness and hostilities. Space pirates are, of course, the most plentiful foe that the Star Marshals must face, and frequently (but not always) the crimes that they commit are the most horrific. However, in fact the tasks deeded to the Star Marshals run the gamut from dealing with criminal and/or exploitative corporate actions, rebellious military generals, and alien incursions into Fringe space. Those that succeed at these daunting tasks become legend. Those that fail are simply dead.

In the end, the task of the Star Marshals in endless and thankless, but those few that hear the call, answer it and conduct themselves with pride and honor.

The Tealnik are an old-fashioned people, and one who fiercely believes in a strongly decentralized government. The oldest and most advanced species known to core world science, the Too-Nia have built a vast interstellar empire that spans hundreds, perhaps thousands of worlds.
Little is known about this reclusive and secretive civilization, save that they have been exploring the stars since before the species of the core world had developed anything that could be called a civilization. Hailing from a stretch of the galaxy far beyond the frontier worlds of the Fringe, the Too-Nia have only been encountered in the deepest reaches of space. The exploratory craft and trading vessels of this race venture far out into the unexplored depths of the galaxy and sometimes make hesitant, intermittent contact with other worlds.

Infinite Futures is a sci-fi RPG geared to allow you to play any sort of sci-fi genre or game. You will find that IF is a great game, fully detailed with loads of great races and classes as well as skills and feats to make any sci-fi game a joy to play.

Prologue: What’s in a name?
Well, first I should explain that first we tried about half a dozen other names for this game. Some of the names we wanted were already taken. But most of the time, the problem was, a name conjured up too specific an image, or no image at all.

While there is a great variety in fantasy, it is a single genre. Whereas science fiction has a multitude of sub-genera: post apocalyptic, modern horror, dystopian, space rangers, space opera, space exploration, and alien invasions, to name a few.

In fantasy, magic, in some form or another, is an interregnal part of the story. But when you consider science fiction, there is sci-fi which doesn’t involve supernatural forces; sci-fi which doesn’t involve androids; sci-fi which doesn’t involve space travel. While there are many elements which can be included, or have a sci-fi feel to them, no single one is actually mandatory the way magic defines the fantasy genera.

So after our last name fell through I was lying in bed one day (I was performing astronomical observations at the time, so living a nocturnal lifestyle). As I tried to ignore the sunlight and drift off to sleep, I thought about a name which could capture the feel of ‘generic sci-fi.’ Given the variety in different people’s visions of the futures, what one name could possibly capture the feeling of the infinite possible futures?

The infinite possible futures? In the RPG industry, how you abbreviate the name of your game is a non-trivial question. Acronyms are one of the most popular ways. Infinite Futures naturally becomes IF. And that is really what Sci-Fi is all about “What IF...”

The existence or nonexistence of the supernatural is a point of debate in modern science. In science-fiction the debate is far from academic. In some sci-fi supernatural abilities are not only real, but deadly. In other settings, the supernatural is nothing but, crackpot ramblings, con jobs and parlor tricks which are exposed for what they are by heroic investigators.

Infinite Futures is a Science Fiction conversion for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game system, but its intention is not to follow any particular genre of Science Fiction but rather Infinite Futures provides all of the tools for creating an RPG campaign in many different types of Science Fiction genres.

Everything you need is provided within the pages of Infinite Futures, new races, new classes, feats and skills. A full Psionics system usable in a Sci-Fi setting is also provided, along with advice on running a Sci-Fi based RPG, foes, and dangers, space travel and more.

In 2011 Avalon Games released the first of many genre expansions for the Pathfinder RPG. Infinite Future took the Pathfinder system and applied it to the Sci-Fi genre, allowing game masters and players to explore all the different possible game available within the Sci-Fi setting.

“What if the Nazi regime could be destroyed, Professor?”

The elderly gentleman nearly choked on his food and quickly grabbed a napkin to press against his lips. The professor purposely switched the conversation back to German. “I don’t know what you mean, sir. And this is certainly not the place to discuss it,” he ended with a hiss.

“Professor,” the stranger began with a bored tone, although in German to not upset the peace any further. “I asked you to meet me here to discuss your work, specifically the studies regarding extrasensory perception that our Nazi hosts have so graciously allowed you to continue under their strict supervision.” The man finished his glass and smiled at the elderly scientist. “Yes, there is a gentleman by the bar watching you right now to ensure you do not meet with any unsavory freedom cell leaders. Unfortunately, I happen to be one.”

Before the professor could panic, wide eyes looking for an escape, the young man leaned forward, the flippant demeanor gone. “We need you, Professor. I know you have found ways of using the mind to defend and push away the creatures of darkness. I am here to help you escape from under their cruel thumb and join the side of right. You know the Fifth Reich is hell-bent on destroying our world. Come with me now, and help us save it!”

His voice never rose above a conversational tone but the urgency was irrefutable. The Professor looked out the restaurant window and found himself nodding, hope quickening his sad heart for the first time in months. This is not the America he wanted to grow old and die in. Perhaps there was a chance for the human race after all.

They both stood to leave when the front door of the restaurant slammed open. The Professor found himself staring at a half-dozen Nazi troops, all of whom looked dead and rotting. The rebel leader grabbed his arm and pulled him around. “Through the kitchen….”

Department 13, The Setting

Welcome to the sourcebook for Department 13, Avalon Game’s science fiction/horror game. The edge of known space is a varied place. There is no exact or specific definition that determines which worlds make up the Fringe. The Fringe is not a defined territory, like a country or a corp world. It is a frontier - a vague line drawn on star maps that marks the edge of “civilized” space.
