$15.00 will get me a couple of mediocre paperback books, or one good one, or a couple of second run movies in the theatre, or a month and half of Netflix.
To my mind, if a $15.00 monthly subscription keeps me thoroughly engaged for four hours, it's worth my spending it. If it keeps me thoroughly engaged for 10 hours, it's a phenomenal value. I think that many experienced online gamers have been incredibly fortunate to find games that engage them at a rate that represents the kind of value-for-money that almost no other group encounters. I also think it has spoiled a lot of them. Yes, your computer can also be considered part of the expenditure, but I doubt that more than a tiny fraction are using their computers for nothing else. Skiers, sailors, fisherpeople, Soccer players, and most other people with hobbies put more money into equipment that they can't do anything else with than most gamers do.
Your subscription to a game has a value to the creator, but perhaps not quite as much as you think it should. That's all they're getting. They don't get a cut of your gaming computer or the keyboard with 18 macro buttons or the mouse with 12 buttons and a set of counterweights that gives you perfect balance.
