A Starfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 1-4.

Theft cannot be tolerated, especially when the culprit is a former Starfinder! The PCs travel to the red world of Akiton, hot on the heels of a deserting Starfinder who stole a magical relic from the vaults of the Lorespire Complex. Things get complicated when they discover what should be a dreary town in Akiton's wastelands is now positively jubilant. Could this revelry, not to mention the re-opening of town's formerly defunct mining operations, be related to the wayward Starfinder?

Good scenario overall

Just ran this scenario yesterday. Very nice to run, a lot of background details, relevant to the story (so you don't need to check corebook for lore every time a new name pops up), very easy to incorporate all presented information in the world for PCs to discover. Encounters are good, challenging, although the final one seems to be a bit off for players (I think, personally, there should be some challenges, that are not in favor of the PCs). Party ended up surrendering, but managed to sleight'o handed the objective just before the bad guys left. So, clever thinking yet again prevailed.

4 stars just for the trap in the end, which IMO looks like a screwjob and have too much impact on the final scene without much telegraphing options or ways to avoid (except spot and disarm).

Firefly themed scenario was a lot of fun

I've just finished running the Quests and the first 3 PFS scenarios at a Con. These reviews are partly for the impression that they collectively left on me and so the beginning of the reviews are identical.

Together, these form a wonderful introduction to both Starfinder and the Society. There are lots and lots of background details that just pop out and are very evocative of the setting. Together, they illustrate just how wide a range of possible games can be run using Starfinder and the variety of adventures that we can hopefully expect in Society play.

The end result of running this material is that I am much happier with both the mechanics and setting than I was going in. The game plays better than it appears that it might, all the characters were participating in all the scenarios and none really dominated any particular scenario.

And the setting has become quite interesting. There are LOTS of stories to be told and the system is robust enough to tell most of them :-).

I (obviously) disagree with the other reviewers.

I got considerable enjoyment out of the story (mind you, I've always liked Barsoom. I mean Akiton. Totally not Barsoom). It felt very much like a Firefly episode.

You've got Corporate Goons to talk with or fight with.

You've got somebody to track down. Somebody the locals like.

You've got miners to portray. Miners that are designed to be fun as you make sure to give the players the basic information they need.

I found the final combat about right. Challenging, scary, but ultimately the party of nearly all Pregen PCs played by new players prevailed.

I think that one thing the other reviewers haven't yet fully absorbed is that combat is fundamentally different in Starfinder. You're EXPECTED to take lots of hits, its EXPECTED that characters will go down. Hit points are IMPORTANT, more important than AC.


Great story but fell short

I really enjoyed running this but I felt it could of gone a bit longer even with the player who's character speaks really slow it ran aboard 3 hours.

I had a table of 7 and the final encounter was rough on them they had to spend 3 welcome to starfinder boons between the 7 the fear was very real for them. They enjoyed the challenge and story.


good story, but some unbalances

Hi,

I have run this scenario last night with an overall run time of about 3hrs and a bit. The story is good altough the it could be expanded a bit more with some more town interaction. Overall everyone in the party enjoyed the story.

now for some stuff hidden under spoilers because of the fact that there is some issues with game mechanics.

main antagonist:

Even tho his flavor and tactics are good he is hard to take down while he seems to have no issues with taking down players due to a +10 ranged attack with a +1d4 trick attack. for a 3rd lvl NPC he should have gotten around a +6, possible +7 hit for ranged. I cannot explain the +10. So that is something I would like to see fixed as he is able to work his way through the party and got a few of them near death

main antagonist henchmen:

In the statblocks these guys have a Dex of +1 and their ranged skills are +0, this is something I noticed after reviewing it and discussing it with my players. Overall I would say their ranged could be buffed a bit to make them a bit more of a threat ranged and then step into close combat when needed.

Overall a good story, but the statblocks are a bit off.


Good Story but unbalances

Like Andrew W, I enjoyed the story and setting for this scenario it was well written. However the Final encounter seemed completely over powered when compared to the adversaries faced in The Commencement. The boss could roll a 2 and still hit most players and the damage out put far exceeded anything we could return.

    Spoiler:
    The scenario assumes the PCs are not adapted to the planet's weak gravity and thinner atmosphere. They are advised at the very beginning to get light armor or some other means to deal with the atmosphere. There are also a few places where the ability to jump higher, etc., is taken into account.

    Just noticed a kinda big typo, the faction sheet on p. 19 says Starfinder Society Scenario #8-04 Wardens of Sulfur Gulch

    It seems to me that either the "monsters/NPCs are built different from PCs" rules are not as great as they were sold OR the developer didn´t use them correctly.

    Of course, with them not being out yet and only coming up in octobers "Alien Archive", it´s hard to say if the version used in here was the "right/final" one...


    Eh, looking over his statblock and another from Dead Suns it's about the same,

    they're both Operative builds and while he has +2 more attack Clara in Dead Suns does a lot more damage.

    I guess it's the case of people theorycrafting and being upset that the theorycraft doesn't work they way it did in PF. Without checking out how this works in practice, of course.

    Recently, this scenario received an updated version. The email incorrectly matched the updates with another scenario we intend on updating in the near future. For clarity's sake, here's the compiled list of updates to this scenario.
