Game & Taxes

Since I just proposed an adventure idea to the people at Paizo and tax season is upon us...

I just realized that I can start deducting my gaming supplies as a business expense. Are there any CPA's or other tax experts that can confirm or deny this? I also just realized that the Paizo crew has been doing this for years, haven't they?

Hi, This is Lady Celiwyn Alondra (Thanis's fiance), I'm not a full CPA yet, but my training suggests that if you are in the business of gaming and have a business lisence then you can deduct gaming supplies as a legit business expense.

However if you do not have a business liscence then you don't have a business legally and you can't claim a business expense with the government if you do not have a business that the government knows about.

Another thing to consider is if you claim business expenses then you also have to pay taxes on any profits you made.

Feel free to e-mail me with more tax questions. Mostly at this point I am trained in personal taxes (i.e. doing people's, not business taxes) so I don't mind helping with that a bit too.

Sincerely,
Celiwyn Alondra

Thanks, Celiwyn. I really appreciate the advice.

I wasn't exactly sure how it would work, but a friend of mine is a freelance musician and he has been writing off all sorts of things because he uses them to teach music lessons (mostly CD's).

I figured that as a freelance writer that it might be feasible - but why get a business liscense if I'm a freelancer?

Oh well, the taxman cometh...
