We've been playing through this AP for over a year now, and are a couple sessions into the 3rd part of the Wrath of the Righteous AP.
I'm playing the Wizard/Archmage in the party, built primarily as a crafter. With Mythic rules in play, the build has far exceeded my expectations. Here is where I'm at now:
A speed multiplier of x8 when crafting magic items, allowing up to 8k GP crafted per day:
Item creation costs are driven down to 1/8th their standard price (in most cases) as well:
This is all with a +30 Spellcraft check. There are dozens of over-the-top scenarios I could propagate with this build. For example:
"(There is a 10% chance per minute that an outsider from that plane (determine randomly) comes through it looking for food, fun, or trouble.)" I can easily craft multiple Cubes, and we could use them until we've attracted the attention of a bunch of creatures from the good/celestial realms, convince them our cause is Righteous and set them loose for vengeance on the Worldwound, or litter the infected countryside with activated cubes and come what may... I can think of many other examples in which I could just 'break the scenario'. I've been holding back for the sake of the group's fun factor, but from an RP standpoint I'm having a hard time not justifying "Implementing Plan M". Conversely, the DM is being very, very stingy on downtime rules. I was advised there would be liberal downtime in the 3rd adventure, but so far, I'm not seeing it. At this point field trips into the Worldwound feel like a waste of my character's valuable time unless the enemies are epic. Most battles I twiddle my thumbs because the other 3 party members have things well under control. I feel like I'm being punished for my build, and not rewarded for my restraint. I'm not sure how much of it is the DM, and how much of it is the Adventure Path. Just curious though: given the 'magic item factory' scenario how would you handle this as a DM? Would you find a way to put the kabosh on it, or would you let your players scrape all the way to the bottom of the sandbox? ![]()

Fight or flight, except you fight, and you fight HARD. Rage can be quiet. As a matter of fact, quiet rage is not only the most inspiring, its the most terrifying. This ^^^^ In literature, the most notable leaders are not the ones that fly off the handle at the smallest slight. They are the ones that count every slight until the time arrives to unleash their rage. I'm thinking of Vader abstactly ; rage does not always manifest as "screaming and throwing a fit" type rage. A good leader can be calm, rational and collected and then totally flip his s*!+ when the time is perfect. The PC: this cult of personality [Leadership] can be so dispassionate, and then fly into a massive frenzy when their abilities are truly needed or able to be harnessed is a great roleplaying mechanism now that I think about it - I have a great idea for my next PC. Recalcitrant Rager. Edit: From a game mechanics standpont... consider having higher INT and WIS scores. Depending on the level of optimization at your table this offsets the whole "grar I smash with sword" complication. ![]()

Be wary your PCs do not attempt to "equip" magic items on the Airship. That could get very broken, very quickly. From a RAW standpoint, I think your players assumptions about Invisibility are correct -- since the PC's are "carried" they would Invis with the airship - with one small caveat: At 100/lbs per caster level, I'm not sure that would cover a colossal ship, even at level 20! Since the PC's are "carried" their weight would count against the weight of the airship AND all the carried cargo. If they can muster that kind of spell power in your campaign the airship is the least of your worries. On the other hand, if they go the route with Animate Object and Permanence, the airship is prone to crash with a simple Dispel Magic, so ... caveat emptor? ![]()
This is outside the scope of the current rules set, but as DM, I would ask myself if the casters incur Arcane Spell failure due to broken bones, how would this same effect penalize other classes? The Fighter's attack bonuses?
Also, I'd think that it would depend on the limb...
What about a fractured skull? A broken jaw if the spell has verbal components? d20 system deals with HP in the abstract to avoid these kind of complications and situational quandries to keep play flowing. If your table wants to use broken bones as a 'condition' then I suggest you all discuss and adopt a system you can agree to work with before the first collarbone snaps in your campaign! TLDR: Only if your DM hates arcane casters. ![]()
Simple solution:
High level casters (the kind that can cast permanency and levitation) could simply hold the city up in one-ton sections, add potential metamagic effects and it could be done. In my game, i'd make it highly illegal to cast mass dispel type magics within... err... upon the city limits, as occasionally a spell goes awry and half a city block plummets to the ground below. This would also allow the city to be modular, with pieces nudged and re-arranged. If the city was attacked in force, it could break down into smaller pieces and break off from the main. Sorry, getting carried away. TLDR version: Lots of Levitation spells ![]()
Thanks for the feedback: My takeaway is that with the magic items, it's viable, but not advisable:
Let's take this munchkin proposal to the next level then:
The $20 Million question: Casting Invisibility on the familiar (assuming the Wiz has a high enough caster level to affect the entire load) would then do... what? * The familiar becomes invisible. Probably. * The wizard (being carried) count as gear for purposes of the spell, and therefore become Invisible until he breaks contact with the familiar as well? *the harness is invisible, and the Wizard appears to be flying awkwardly through the air on a strap attached to nothing? *"items picked up disappear if tucked into the clothing or pouches worn by the creature"
If the familar drapes a sheet/curtain over the harness strap and over the Wizard before he casts then the wizard would be invisible, right? So... even if the Wizard does not count as 'an item' he could be covered by another 'carried item' and affected per the Invisibility spell. I find the concept viable in a high fantasy campaign, even if it's somewhat spirit-of-the-rules abusive. I won't be at all surprised or resentful if (when!) the DM house rules me down, though. EDIT: I haven't even started on the "So my PC is being carried through the air by a tiny creature... now what?" questions. I'm assuming Concentration checks to cast against, possibly partial actions only in a round? Not seeing much in the rules re: this. ![]()
If I outfitted an Owl or Hawk familiar (Str 6) with a Heavyload belt (+8 STR for carrying purposes) and Muleback Cords (x3 Carrying Capacity, could be obtained by taking Extra Slot feat for familiar), could I conceivably give the familiar a high enough carrying capacity to literally carry my Wizard around in battle? "Flying mounts can’t fly in medium or heavy barding." "A medium or heavy load counts as medium or heavy armor for the purpose of abilities or skills that are restricted by armor." These are the only two things I could find in the core rulebook that reference flight and encumbrance. If I understand this correctly, by adding the two magic items I could give an Owl or Hawk familiar an 87/174/262 carrying capacity -- within the limits to carry around my 140 lb wizard and his light load of gear. 6 STR+8 STR=14 STR from the Heavyload belt
If I fit my Wizard with a flying/climbing harness, is it viable within weight rules to have my Owl swoop in and fly (carry) me around the battlefield, or am I overlooking something? Are there existent rules to handle this kind of potential "Carried by another" scenario? How does this work?! |
