Small rant;
In my gaming career I have seldom played as opposed to running a game. The reason for this is twofold. One has to do with Advanced Races.
1)Most people want to play a character and not run the game. Simple.
2)The other is this: I hate vanilla races. I have always found them dull in the extreme. Very few game masters allow the interesting races. Game balance and the such. While this is a valid point I usually wind up feeling that many game masters just don't want anything but basic races. The same characters, effectually, over and over again. Seriously? Whose character is it, the GM's or mine? Most often the interesting race hasn't got an overly large (if any) advantage.
However, whose game is it? If the GM doesn't like an ability , and some do throw off balance, just don't allow the ability. The most often cited problem with the drow, in my experience, is that they are hated. Not the magic resistance or what have you. Yet I am always told I can play a half orc. Never mind they are treated little better. In fact they aren't feared, as the drow are, just hated. Easier target if you are truley going to rollplay.
This is the main reason the fantasy genre RPG has really fallen out of my favor. And, regrettably, the reason I will likely quit the game I am in now. I put a lot of thought into my characters and when they are not thought evoking...well, I am playing a series of numbers on paper and not a character.
