About Boram Velvett

Name: Boram Velvett
Race: Halfling
Class: Thief
Alignment: Evil - Shift danger/blame from yourself to others for exp.
Level: 1

Look:
Shifty Eyes, No Hair, Sailor's Clothes, and a Lithe Body

Boram looks a lot like this - except with a lighter skin tone, is about 2-1/2ft shorter, and wears a loose sea vest and shorts.

Description: Boram is cheerful-looking Halfling - his short
frame lithe and swarthy from years of work in the hot sun aboard the Jenivere. The stout little sailor usually wears an eyepatch over his left eye, keeps his head shaved (polished and shiny), and is rather fond of grog. Especially when it isn't his.

Backstory: Boram Velvett has been working on board the Jenivere since his youth, leaving the Sargavan slums and trying his very hardest not to look back. Since then, his life has been hard work and long hours up in the ship's rigging. Still better than the slums though. Over the years, the short little fellow has developed something of a reputation among the rest of the crew: more than a few drunken sailors have been heard throwing about the phrase "Smooth as Velvett" in admiration, jealousy, possibly even fear!

Boram Responds:

1) What happened to your left eye?

Absolutely nothing. Boram signed on with the Jenivere as a youth, fresh off the docks. Every young sailor gets hazed differently - Boram was convinced by the crew that eyepatches were a trendy sort of fashion amongst sailors. By the time he learned otherwise, the habit had stuck. These days, he brags that it helps keep his night vision.

2) How do you like it aboard The Jenivere? Do you get along with the crew? Any friends?

Boram enjoys his work and his life. He has been working in the rigging since his very first voyage, and understands it on an almost instinctual level. The same could be said of all the drinking, boasting and lechery that sailors are known for. Boram works closely with his superior, Crimson Cogward. The two get on well, spending many-a-night drinking grog and waxing philosophical as their legs dangle off the yardmast. Boram is also good friends with the ship's chef Fishguts: though Fishguts is famous for his poor hygiene, halflings can overlook almost anything if it means good food is part of the bargain.

3) How did you learn about traps and poison?

Boram spends his shore leave pursuing his "unusual" hobbies. Ever since the Jenivere first docked in Westcrown, Boram has been an avid customer at the Dusk Market. Dabbling in a variety of drugs and poisons before settling on Goldenroot, Boram paid very highly indeed to not only learn how to make the poison, but to slowly immunize himself as well. His use of Goldenroot on passengers and shipmates alike is undoubtedly the cause of his "Smooth as Velvett" infamy. He also dabbles in trapsmithing at the port of Ilizmagorti, learning the art from an old man that he still suspects is a retired Red Mantis Assassin.

4) What are the limits to your thievery? How far are you willing to go to get what you want?

Boram doesn't think of himself as a thief, merely someone with a looser grasp on how possessions and ownership work than most. He believes that if you were foolish enough to be stolen from, you probably didn't deserve whatever it was in the first place. The same goes for his use of Goldenroot: it isn't his fault you weren't prepared for it! How far is Boram willing to go? He won't kill someone for a shiny bauble, if that's what you mean. Even threatening violence would be rather unlike him (though not out of the question).

5) What would you consider to be your greatest strength? Greatest weakness? Deepest fear? Proudest accomplishment?

Boram prides himself on his levelheadedness, and excels at committing himself to action and following through.

He possesses a peculiar sense of honor and loathes owing favors to others with a passion: Boram will do anything to balance the books (Not when it comes to money or stuff though - in his mind, that doesn't count).

The Halfling rigger has spent most of his life on the sea, and has unpleasant memories of the Sargavan slums: he hates being tied down, and isn't a fan of small spaces either. Oh, snakes freak him out too. Boram doesn't like snakes.

A number of the crew still remember the time Boram saved them (he does too, since it settled almost all of his outstanding "debts"). A few years ago, they had been sailing back to Cheliax when they were hit by the storm of the decade... and the Jenivere was blindsided. The sails were still almost full-sail when the brunt of the storm hit: securing them seemed futile, since it would take nearly an hour to reef them all. In spite of that, Boram risked his life making the ship storm-worthy; diligently wrapping the sails and rigging by himself when the others had long given up hope, expecting the next big wave to sink them at any second. Captain Kovack gave him a medal for that, complete with an awkwardly formal presentation ceremony on the ship's bow.

Bonds:

1) ???

2) Silvo Pazzi had my back when things went wrong - He swung to my rescue on some loose rigging when I nearly fell overboard! Now... I owe him.

3) Gleus and I have a con running - He made a drunken promise to me: with a little help from Fishguts (and maybe Crimson) we're going to find and drink all the grog on the ship! This is going to be fun.

◾Is there a trap here and if so, what activates it?
◾What does the trap do when activated?
◾What else is hidden here?

Tricks of the Trade

When you pick locks or pockets or disable traps, roll+DEX.

✴ On a 10+, you do it, no problem.

✴ On a 7–9, you still do it, but the GM will offer you two options between suspicion, danger, or cost.

Backstab

When you attack a surprised or defenseless enemy with a melee weapon, you can choose to deal your damage or roll+DEX.

Applied means you have to carefully apply it to the target or something they eat or drink.
