Jeff, I have to admit that the huge lines at Gencon (and Comic-con) to enter into companies booths to purchase items is a major turn off for me as well. It does encourage me to purchase the items and materials I want online or via my LGS (which I am sure my LGS love anyways).

I know at Comiccon, some of the companies hand out tickets that allow you to queue up into the buyers lines at certain points throughout the show. (Hazbro I am looking at you). This means faster lines, but basically means that buyers cannot do impulse buys.

I always understood that impulse buys were a major driving force for much of the retail sales at Gencon though.

Of course the tickets were only for the show specials and not for the general merchandise, and some vendors would split their stores into two parts: 1. Gencon specials and totally new stuff, 2. older and standard (unlimited) merchandise.

This might be an idea.

It is with sad feelings that I submit my resignation as Venture Captain of the LA Grand Lodge. What a weird, strange trip it has been and what a great ride!! As part of the original 13 VC crew appointed by Paizo in September of 2010, we all had large geographic areas and large expectations. Here in Los Angeles, we jumped into our local gaming conventions of ORCCON/GATEWAY/GAMEX and we squeezed out two tables from the Organized play area of the convention. Over the years we have added, and carved out our own dedicated area, with over 85 PFS tables each convention, making for 3 weekends of four days of non-stop PFS gaming throughout the year. We have had a number of stores joining us with regular gamedays: Game Ogre, The Warhouse, Comic Quest, Game Empire, The Realm, Socal Games and Comics, Seth’s Gaming Stores in Ventura, Thou Shalt Game in Temecula, Pathfinder Online Gaming Collective, Aerohobbies, Brookhurst Hobbies, Dicehouse Games, Emerald Knights, GMI Games and Collecibles, Knight Ware Inc, Pair A Dice Games & Commics, the Last Genadier, Third Planet, and a number of other current and past stores throughout Orange County, Riverside County, San Bernardino County, Los Angeles County and Ventura County. We were a huge region covering many players and many stores.
Our Volunteer crew grew and I received excellent support from my Venture Lt crew: Brian Darnell, Preston Poulter, Jon-Enee Merriex, Mark Dorrough, Nicholas Milasich, Frank Perkins and Ron Feldman. The Store Owners, GMs, store Coordinators and Volunteers made my job a joy: Don Collins, Eric Collins, Bruce Higa, Grant Gaines, and so many others, that I know I could not and have not listed them all, have made this a dynamic and growing region and just because I did not list your name, does not mean that your help was unappreciated nor overlooked. I could not have built this region without each and every one of you.
So what does this mean for the future of the LA Grand Lodge? Due to the growth of the region, and the number of stores and an expanding number of conventions, and events; the region shall be splitting into two new regions: Jon-Enee Merriex the current VL of Long Beach shall be stepping up and coordinating the region of Los Angeles County and coordinating with the Los Angeles Gaming Conventions to continue their run of games, reformulating the Grand Lodge throughout the area. Ron Feldman, VL of Orange County shall be stepping up and taking charge of a new Grand Lodge of Orange County and the Inland Empire, helping the expanding number of stores and conventions that are happening in Anaheim and the Greater Inland Empire (Riverside and San Bernardino Counties). I know they will be stepping up and introducing themselves and their new staff (Venture Lts and Store Coordinators).
Both Ron and Jon-Enee shall be appointing new Venture Lts to help them in their expanded roles and to continue to provide coverage for the play base here in Southern California. And I know that the surrounding Grand Lodges of Northern California and San Diego will continue to support them in their efforts to service the player base of California and the Western United States. I always felt blessed by the support of the surrounding Grand Lodges and Venture Officers who would often join us in the area, coming down to both play and GM in the local events, and I know that the close relationship between the entire PFS community in Southern California shall continue.
Let it be known that I will miss serving with and coordinating events with all of you, and while I will be taking a break, I am not leaving the community and look forward to playing at many of your tables, and continuing to GM a few tables in the future. I love the Southern California gaming community and want to see what is best for the community, while I continue to take care of personal matters and spend more time with my family.

As long as you have your chronicle, that is the 'official' record of your character. No matter what the database might have or report. So I doubt a GM or organizer is going to not let you play your character as long as your paperwork is in order (Character sheet, chronicles, and inventory tracking sheet).

ok the dragon arrived, and scared the begesus out of all the other minis with its fierceness!

Only one problem in the end with the order. In opening the Reign of Winter case, one of the boxes did not have its Large figure in the box, and only had the three small, meaning I was short one large figure from the case.

I went through the inventory for the entire case, and the only large missing from the case was #44 POLKOVNIK LAVRENTI.

Now I know that there is not guarantee that we get every figure with a case order (just a large likelihood), but having a missing large from the box definitely increases the likelihood that it was this one missing from the empty box.

Ok, starting book three.
The first encounter with the Ogrekin has one of them hunting a cat.

It says that he/it is singing a kitten song as it is fighting the cat.

Did anyone else come up with some lyrics or a song for the encounter?

I was thinking something along the line of this:

(song to the tune of 'Oh so pretty")

Oh the Kitty!
Oh so Pretty!
Will be my lunch tonite!

Oh the Kitty
Smells so pretty!
Crunchy will be my meal tonite!

Oh the kitty!
Come on Kitty!
Your eyes will be my treat tonite!

Silly kitty!
Stupid Kitty!
Don’t know when your done, that’s right

maptools - free - very detailed, can totally run the entire Pathfinder/Dnd 3.5 framework and do all the work for you. Requires client to run on every player machine, Mac or PC compatible (Java based)

Ttop - fast to get up and running, simple to use, does not have all the bells and wistles. Windows only

D20pro - Very professional, co$ts, has dedicated programmer (paid) support. Client based - requires all machines to run the program: max and windows compatible

Roll20 - Web based, so can run on any machine that can run Chrome as a browser. Active community, constantly getting new updates.

I have played and used all of them, all of them are worth having and good to use. Part of it depends on how much time I have as a GM to set up the game or as a player to set up my character and import it into the game. Ttop is the fastest to get up and running, Maptools is the most detailed as far as spells, effects, feats, etc.

OMG!!! What an outstanding convention!!! Our volunteers, and GMs provided over 88 tables of PFS fun to our players over 4 days of gaming. The convention itself hosted over 1700 attendees to make this one of the largest gaming conventions held in Southern California for the past 25 years.
This was all done with the effort and support of volunteers, who run events, support GMs, schedule games, and over all provide one of the best gaming environments that keeps bringing people back.
The next convention is in February over Presidents' day weekend. Another 4 days of gaming!!
We shall be hosting this years Gencon Special PFS scenario at that time, so this gives us 5 months to prepare. Place it on your calendar!!

Thank you players!
Thank you GMs!

Strategicon Gateway 2014 is coming on Labor Day Weeked (8/29-6/1) and we are starting GM recruitment! We are very excited about strategicon and can’t wait for an awesome weekend of PFS!

To all GMs both veteran and new, thank you for considering GMing. We can’t have games without GMs. Whether you have 150 games under your belt or this will be your first time GMing, we need volunteers to host Pathfinder. Whether you have veteran experience, or new GM enthusiasm, you are the lifeblood of our hobby and we thank you in advance for making our participation in this amazing convention possible.

As you know Pathfinder at Strategicon gets bigger and bigger every year and as of Gamex, this growth has caused us to start using a new GM assignment system. Gamex was very successful, we had great reviews about the con, an ESPECIALLY the quality of GMs. We hope this scheduling system was part of that, and we believe it successful enough to use it again for Gateway.

The process:

• Go to https://warhorn.net/events/gateway-2014-pfs and register on the site. You won’t be able to sign up for games yet. Review the schedule and decide on what slots you want to GM

• Send an e-mail to nmilasich@gmail.com including:
o
o The e-mail account that is connected to your Paizo Account
o
o How many slots you want to GM
o
o Which slots you want to GM. Slots are:

• Fri 2p-7p, 8p-1a

• Sat 8a-1p, 2p-7p, 8p-1a

• Sun 8a-1p, 2p-7p, 8p-1a

• Mon 8a-1p, 2p-7p

• We also have several modules on the schedule that cover 2 slots. If you are interested in running one of those modules please indicate in your e-mail.

• Suggestions on what you want to run and comments. Due to the increased presence of PFS at the con we can’t guarantee you’ll get everything you want but we will take your requests into consideration.

GM Rewards

• Tier 2 - For running or volunteering on the sign-in for 2 slots you will receive a badge

• Tier 1 - For running or volunteering for 5 slots you will receive either 25% reimbursement on a room or a complimentary room shared with other volunteers. These rewards are limited so please indicate what you desire in the e-mail as these rewards will be first come first serve. The room shares are especially limited so these are first come first serve

• GM preferred game signup - after you request your GM signup you will receive an e-mail soon that will let you know when player signup has opened for GMs. GMs will have a short window to signup to play before other players.

Once again, thank you for being a dedicated Pathfinder! We can’t wait for the convention and we hope to catch a game with you soon.

Heh. Oops.

When I first started playing AD&D (just about the time the 1st edition GM's guide came out), all of the d20s I could find were labelled 0-9 twice. Also, all the dice I could find (except, for some reason, for the d4s) had indentations for the numbers, but they weren't inked or painted in. This meant that I would run a pencil through the indentations so I could actually see the numbers. For the d20s, we had to use two different colors to know if we rolled 6 or 16. (I ended up using a red crayon for half of the numbers, and scraping off the surface. Worked pretty well.)

A year or two later, I started seeing actual d10s with 10 sides (amazing... but violating the Platonic purity of our dice collection....), dice that had the numbers pre-inked, d20s with two-digit numbers, semi-transparent pretty colored dice, pretty swirly dice, etc. Kids had it so easy....

Actually I remember the LGS selling wax pencils of different colors so that people could differentiate the ones from the tens of those twenty sided dice. It was the norm for us in the 70s and 80s before all those new fangled dice came into vogue!

Ok, we need to firm things up a little regarding days of the Week:

I have two days available for sight seeing prior to the convention:

Wednesday (All Day)
Thursday (morning and Afternoon - I have con activities starting at 7pm)

My preference is to make the Seattle sabbatical on Wednesday, since I do not have to report in or be anywhere at a particular time.

I was thinking of starting with get together at the Hotel approximately 9am on Wednesday, with a leave time of 10am?

Is this good for anyone?

So: Wednesday, 9am
Meet at Hotel Lobby/bar
If we have a driver, then we will utilize that, if we don't then we will take the light rail transit.

Agenda:
Downtown: Farmers Market/Space Needle
Parks: Olympic park (if we have not private transportation)
Discovery Park (if we have private transportation)

Magnus, you never mentioned which days you were available.
How about everyone else?

Grand Lodge

Curio, realise that as long as you have the chronicles, that you have THE official proof of the scenarios credited for your character. The scenarios do not HAVE to be in the Paizo database to count for your characters.

Paizo wants and encourages the reporting, but mistakes and reports will go missing, but that does not invalidate your play nor your credit for your characters.

I am proud to announce a grand achievement by an outstanding GM and coordinator: Brian Darnell!!

Brian is one of the Venture Lieutenants in the Southern California Region, running many games not only in his hometown in Riverside California, but traveling throughout Southern California; San Bernadino, Los Angeles County, Orange County and San Diego Counties.

I cannot say enough great things about Brian, so I will quote just one of the recommendations that I received on Brian:

Quote:

Brian is a wonderful storyteller with a deep understanding of the history, politics and lore of the Inner Sea region. While GMing, that knowledge is on full display and as he uses it to help tell a compelling story. Rolling a knowledge check with Brian is always a joy because not only do you get the box text, you get the context of where that box text comes from. He explains the location of the scenario so well that it gives players a firm grasp on what they are doing, where they are and why.

Brian also has a clear perception of the core rules of the game. In the few instances where he is unsure of a rule (and player doesn't know the proper rule either), he is very good about choosing speed and fun over accuracy. This keeps the game moving at a brisk clip without slowing down. But he's also willing to bend when needed. Allowing the player to look up the rule in question and adjusting as needed.

Brian's table management techniques are so refined, players never feel rushed. He ran through Murder's Mark in just over 6 hours (a feat I've yet to be able to do) and one of his players commented afterward: "I had assumed this was a single slot game that just ran a little long. Now I can play another game too! It was awesome".

Finally, Brian is a fun and interactive character while in the GM seat. NPCs he portrays are always vibrant and full of life. They have their own interests and he is very good about playing into that. I cannot think of anyone more worthy of 5 star status than Brian. He is hands down one of the best GMs in the greater Los Angeles area and, in my opinion, exactly what a 5 star GM looks like. I'll leave you with one last quote:

"Now THAT is a 5 star experience!" Said by me, from my first time through 'The Cyphermage Dilemma' gmed by Brian Darnell.

So join me in congratulating Brian in achieving this benchmark in his PFS career!!

Congratulations Brian!!
