If I don't miss my guess, or at least for me and my use of the phrase "E5", stems from the original concept of E6. Where, indeed levels stopped at 6th level. Advancement continued past 6th level with Feats, and some mentioned using Prestige Classes to go another three levels, or so.

When PFBB came along, E5 kinda sprung up since it stopped at fifth level.

Yep. That's pretty much it. Regular level advancement stops at 5th Level, with characters gaining a new feat for every 5000 XP thereafter. Also, yes, I plan to use prestige classes.

I guess I should mention that I'm also not planning to run my campaign in Golarion, which might be considered another strike against some of the APs. Rather, I'm planning to run it in the Avlis setting. I'll take a look at Legacy of Fire on your recommendation, though.

Thanks for the responses, both. I'll definitely check out Crucible of Chaos, as it has received a mention on two different forums now. As for why I discounted the APs - I don't relish starting an AP that can't be finished in E5 (at least not without a *ton* of re-tooling).

Do you mean paizo specific or including 3rd party publication?

Either. Genius is genius, no matter the font from which it flows. :)

I'm still working my way toward actual play of my Pathfinder Beginner Box E5 game (I have a few books to buy yet) and wanted to ask: What are some of the best non-AP Pathfinder adventures out there?

You may also try the E6 PB Wiki, here: http://esix.pbworks.com/w/page/9900109/FrontPage

Thanks for all of the replies and the great info!

Would the Pathfinder Beginner Box work well as an E6-type Pathfinder variant? I ask, as I've ordered the World of Avlis setting from Lulu and am not 100% certain that I want to invest in the larger Pathfinder game line. I thought that D&D 3x was waaaaaaaay too rules-heavy and Pathfinder complete doesn't really seem to have improved upon D&D 3x in that regard. That said, the Beginner Box looks like it could function as a kind of "Pathfinder Light" - especially if coupled with the principles in E6 (well, E5, given the box's range of levels). How 'bout it? Will it work like that?
