Agreed. What would it take to get a poster of this?

Liberty's Edge

I'm looking for someone to make me hopeful about Stonelords, as we did not have a good experience with paths.

Thursday we played "Paths we choose" in a group of only our experienced friends (not my parents mentioned in a prior post) my wife and I look for society events at cons, as they are consistent and usually fun, so we talked some of our other pathfinder playing friends into this joining us for paths. They all played society events earlier that day - Goblins, confirmations, etc and knew what to expect from an event.

Paths, was not a good event in our groups opinion. We did not have a rock star GM, but we didn't have a bad GM and he seemed to know the module. We had a group of friends that laugh and play well together, so we did what we could to enjoy it.

There seemed to be some confusion as to what was going on during the event ( our table and tables around us were guessing about the usage of the big screens, as our DMs did not know) and I know I have seen some chatter online about the delivery of the specials for Gencon.

Paths just felt like the design was rushed and the story choppy and forced. We're all signed up for stone lords tonight, but now we are all rethinking it.

I am looking for someone to make me hopeful about Stonelords. The wife and I really loved some of the previous specials.

That IS tempting, but I think we're planning on hitting the Zoo that day. Maybe I can run "The Confirmation" before we head out.

We'll see! Is it just a "show up and find a table"? thing?

That's totally cool. I remember as a kid "making" my mom play D&D with me. She always played along, but hated it I later found out...she just didn't get it. My Grandma on the other hand was a role-playing master.

My limited experience says it will be fine, my noob experience was at GENCON and everyone was great. Plus since you and your wife are vets it's not like they will be flying completely blind.

For Paths We Choose you'll be using the lvl 4 PreCons, make sure you all pick a faction (not Silver Crusade or Grand Lodge) that will have an interesting storyline for that special.

Thanks for the lvl 4 reminder! In my head I was thinking that was Friday's Game.

I honestly would urge you to think about playing something other than the Saturday night special. Bonekeep 3, I think, would be a bad experience for new players since its pretty much written to kill characters in bad ways (at least the first two have and I don't see Jason changing that).

Thanks! Exactly what I would hope to hear.

I have a feeling that Saturday they may spend doing some local stuff, so that works out.

Although, I could see it kind of being epic to have their characters die the last time they are played. (My first D&D character was killed in by a magic missile after only an hour of life. I am still here!) Good advice, I will throw it out there!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Hi all,

At Gencon, my wife and I and have always done well with organized play events. This year the only events my wife "required" while scheduling was the society special event and she was pretty happy that we signed up for all three specials.

This year we wanted to do a family vacation with my parents and we were planning on not going to Gencon at all this year. I suggested Las Vegas to my mom - we've never been out there - but my mom said "What about that convention you two go to..." So, we're going to Gencon because my mom things Gencon sounds cool.

My parents are casual board gamers, coming to my "at home" convention every year and played their first table top RPG in June(Crypt of the Everflame, with PFS pregens)They did awesome- total "proud child" moment. I think having three gaming kids gave them good exposure to the genre.

My parents are signed up for the specials with my wife and I, we're planning to all play low-level pregens to keep it simple for my parents, plus my wife and I only play society games at Gencon.

If I show up to a special, with "new" players like that, how will it be received by the table? I didn't second guess it when I signed up, but we won't be able to play "The Confirmation" or any other events before we dive into the specials. I know they can handle it and every society table I have been at would welcome new players.

Should I be concerned about the table reaction to bringing "newbies"? Any thoughts or recommendations?

The Baron, requested for his new new warship to be enchanted for flight and Invisibility.

So, a flying warship with cannon and cloaking. How much trouble am I in with this?

This is essentially the creation of a magical item and would fall under those rules.

If you have not yet given them the go ahead, you want to start your comparison pricing for how much it will cost them to make this. If you are at a stage in Kingmaker where the ruler is still a "Baron", then there is no way they should be able to afford the cost of creating such an item.

Benchmark against other items-example- To create a flying carpet:

Craft Wondrous Item, overland flight; Cost 10,000 gp (5 ft. by 5 ft.), 17,500 gp (5 ft. by 10 ft.), 30,000 gp (10 ft. by 10 ft.)

So, it costs 30,000 gold to make a big carpet fly.... it would take hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of gold, to create a a small ship to be made flying. That doesn't even touch on making it invisible.

If your PCs do have a million gold or so to build this item with, it's not that big of a deal for your campaign. Chances are that other Barons and nations also have the resources to make these. I would point this out before them make their first ship.

If this somehow happened in my game- Having important NPCs fall off the deck they cannot see would be my warning shot. I would also consider attempts to steal it.

Early on, I would also point out how thrown flour can coat a person. A light snow or rain would make the invisibility worthless, and depending upon the season and altitude there might be enough precipitation to keep the ship visible.

Then I would have a a territorial dragon rip it to shreds.

Note: Currently we have a "Duke" and are in the 4th book. There is no way my PC's would be able to afford this. They also know how much I love Numeria and would love an excuse to bring more of it into the campaign- "Nice Bird of Prey. Did you know that the one the bad-guys have is for real? Well, theirs can fire while cloaked and also has awesome sensors!".

It's pretty easy to strip & paint/repaint on wizkid models. You should be able to turn up some "how-to"s on that via google.

That being said, if you want to paint, buy the reaper/pathfinder metal casts. Harder to transport, but much better looking. If you are thinking about repainting plastic, that is what you care about... how they look over transport.

I think this will provide a more memorable that my previous version;

Owl Bear, Mark 2:

Staying away from the engage, because of the "glass cannon" effect it creates on a low AC base creature.

Main changes: One more HD, Improved bull rush, tactic change.

Once again, a mated pair of the two of these. I see the encounter starting with the out-of-sight Male owlbear bullrushing the farthest-in PC to the past the Female's Attacks of opportunity. (Driving a prey to the back of the cave)

That should be scary as hell, but I see the female landing 6 attacks right off the bat.(3 normal, 3 opportunity) I was tempted to up the STR more, but I think the animal-level tactics will compensate.

Ideally, this way the encounter will last for at least three rounds and represent a significant threat.

6 PCs are actually toward the low side for us. We usually range 6 to 10 (when all the occasional players drop in)

As a result, I've had to get used to switching stats back and forth in the APs. What I've noticed is that usually when an encounter calls for a single creature, upping that single creature's stats proportionality to the increased number of PCs never works out well. The best way to scale usually includes upping both core stats and adding a creature or creatures to support the encounter.

With the "Tag team" pair in my above stats, I see the mated pair batting prey back and forth, into each other's threatened areas.

If I drop the Armor or HP, I think they will just unload everything in the first round, with a good chance of one dying and the other severely injured before the owlbears take any action.

I'll tinker with it again and come back. Good suggestions.

Liberty's Edge

I'm a bit disappointed in the Owlbear stats as presented, so I am thinking of running the owl bear below instead for 6 PCs. (Below in spoiler)
Let me know what you think.

Notes: They have a well balanced & geared group and this is the only major encounter left for them in the book.

OWLBEAR SPOILER:

Lower DPS, more Armor/ HP. I will probally run TWO of these as a mated pair, since we are 6 players.

You want to look at after tax (net income).

You have to focus your geographic areas: Where in the US vrs Where in Denmark. That is huge. For example $60k is nothing in NYC, but very nice in rural Tennessee, US.

Also factor in cost of Living. For example, I can milk at the store near where I live in Pennsylvania for about $2-ish. That same milk might Cost over $5 in Alaska.

My wife and I gave 4e a chance, playing locally, at RPGA events and when it dropped at Gen Con, but 4e is a fun game that does not play like the RPG I want.

Pathfinder is as fast as 4e, (Faster at high levels) and feels like the kinda of games that made me get into RPGs in the first place.

Pathfinder games tend to be more fun sessions when played with the same players.

For my at-home yearly Con I ran a one-shot in Numeria. PCs were pathfinders sent to investigate a ruin opened up by recent meteor strikes, but of course it was just a crashed space ship.

It was a lot of fun, the trick is in the presentation.

-The weapons fire marks on the sides of the ruin? Looks like wizards dueled with lightning.

-Blasters just look like a broken metal crossbow that has had the bow portion snapped off.

-Encountering bodies in white plate mail with black underleathers was great before they encountered the living versions, with strange white plate helms made to kind of look like a skeleton face. (Imperial Stormtroopers)

-One PC (Andoran) had a side quest to kill the black night that was destined to enslave the world. (Darth Vader, of course)

Dropping the WOTC plastic minis for these guys on the table was priceless. For a one-shot, it was silly but very fun. Numeria is the perfect place to merge any Scifi with fantasy. You might want to read the wiki page on it.

Also, the Seven Swords of Sin module is set in an ancient research lab and has some pulp sci-fi elements to it.

Liberty's Edge

Since he is a paladin/archer of Erastil, have stuff like the following happen OUTSIDE of combat:

Bow String Breaks
Arrow Heads 'fall off' his arrows
His Bow is not where he last left it (but still nearby)
Quiver falls apart
Sees a stag in distance, that runs from the PC in fear.
Etc.....

At night, he should have nightmares about killing a defenseless captive. At times, the role should be switched so that the PC takes on the role of be the defenseless captive.

Have the Town's Priest confront the PC when he comes back to town. The priest has had the same dreams about the PC.

The only way he can atone is to swear to serve Tsuto's next of kin (sister) until she releases him.

So that that service doesn't affect the campaign, in book Two it is she that asks the PCs to investigate the events at the farm. All of book two becomes the Paladin's Penance, and she releases the paladin at it's conclusion.

I don't know, that sounds like the sort of thing that can also throw up some roadblocks. Negative motivators for your distribution channels aren't generally a good idea.

WOTC is working on that model now, and it is creating some backlash amongst the stores, which is in turn pushing pathfinder (and other RPG)sales at those alienated stores.
