About Zuriel & Fayne

A Quest to Quiet the Voices

Zuriel grew up in the deserts of Qadira. For 48 years she happily led a life of making jewelry out of things she found in the desert and then, at night, entering the city to sell them. It was only natural for her to keep to shadows and out of the sunlight because Zuriel is a Wayang, a race that traces its ancestry to the plane of shadows. Making jewelry was a meager livelihood but she was happy with it. Happy until one night when she was awakened by a terrifying dream; something, she could not tell what it was only that it was capable of extreme power, was speaking to her. It had singled her out for a very important task, but she couldn’t quite remember what it was, maybe it hadn’t told her. The most horrifying part was that it was still talking to her, the power of this communication threatened to split her head. Its voice boomed inside her skull. It was difficult to concentrate enough to understand what it was trying to say. Through focus and repetition, Zuriel was able to understand that it wanted to make a deal, it would endow her with arcane power but she had to join the Pathfinders and go where they told her to. Something was waiting somewhere for her. She believed that this ‘deal’ would happen with or without her consent. After accepting, the voice quieted, for a while, then it returned but it seemed to come from a nearby scorpion. Maybe she was just going insane, that would be a more comforting thought than a scorpion telling her what to do and giving her spells. Reluctantly, she left her home and traveled to Gurat in the Zho Mountains and joined the Pathfinder Society.

The Voice is still constantly talking to her, often whispering in languages she doesn’t understand, other times booming with such power that her eyes and nose bleeds. It’s most active when she’s on a quest for the Pathfinder Society but recently, when Zarta Dralneen announced she was breaking ties with Cheliax and intended to form a group to catalog and study the Pathfinder’s collection of powerful/ancient/holy/unholy items, it grew to such a volume that Zuriel was rendered unconscious for two days. That which the Voice wants, must be either in the Dark Archives or will soon be added to its shelves. Until then she must do what the voice says, hoping each quest will quiet the Voice that has invaded her head.
