[b]Personality
Zev knows his mind was affected by his injury, but accepts that whatever was lost is gone forever. He sees it as his duty to use what remains, his training, to help people. He's aware of his own strength, and tries to be a gentle person when he doesn't need to bust a head.
Appearance
Tall, 6'5'', Zev is a physical specimen, corded muscles on a lean frame. Moving smoothly, his motion betrays his training and possibilty of violent action. However, then people see his face. Open and docile, tactless even, his eyes often filled with wonder at the most common of things. When speaking, he is halting, especially with strangers.
Backstory
Zev's family lived in western Varisia, some 100 miles up the coast from Sandpoint. Ogres and Giants were a constant problem in the area, many raids and caravans being taken. Different strategies and tactics that worked well against the large problem was drilled into Zev's head from
and early age, to complement the weapon's training he and the other youths received.
On a cool fall day, in his 16th year, Zev had accompanied his father and brother on a scouting mission to track down a pair of ogres that had been stealing sheep from an isolated paddock. Suprisingly, one of the ogres had half-a-brain and managed to ambush the trio, surprising even Zev's very experienced father.
Nonetheless, after a few frantic moments, the experienced man and Zev's older brother had turned the tide against the ogres and Zev saw an opportunity to impress his family members. Having observed the ogres as his father had taught him, he thought he'd determines a pattern in the smallest ogre's movements. Darting forward to take advantage of his intuition, he instead received a thunderous blow to the side of his head.
After seeing nothing but stars, Zev sank into unconsiousness. Waking he found himself in his room, safe, but something was wrong...missing.
He couldn't remember things.... he wasn't sure what , and he was sure his thoughts weren't so...he couldn't think of the word.
Slowly he recovered....physically, only a 6 inch scar showing where he'd been hit, but mentally, he'd lost part of himself. Formerly gregarious and witty, he was now socially awkward and slow of speech and thought. His family was at a loss, what to do with him?
As slowly returned to village life, it was found that he still retained his nominal skill at carpentry, so he occupied his time helping around the village, happily hammering nails and sawing timber.
A fortnight passed, when a group of giants and ogres raided the village. Zev's family was concerned how the attack might affect Zev, but at the sound of the alarm bells, Zev dropped his saw and ran, fetched his weapons and armor and manned the walls with the others, aquitting himself well in fending off the raiding giants.
It would seem the injury to Zev's brain did not affect his martial training and instincts.
The next few years saw his family try to re-teach Zev many of the basic conventions of civilzed discorse and behaviour that he's lost in the injury. For the most part, some of it stuck, helped by his kind and compassionate nature.
Just turned 19, Zev was helping to sweep out the hosteler's barn when one of the other men started talking about a rumor of giant activity down near Sandpoint. Said it was a shame if the giants attacked, what with the Swallowtail festival to start soon.
Over the next couple of days, Zev could help but think about the prediament Sandpoint found itself in, they probably didn't have many giant fighters down there, they were in danger!
Resolved to help, Zev gathered his things , bade goodbye to his family ( their misgivings aside, he was an adult and they respected his desires to depart ) and hopped on a wagon of turnips bound down the coast trail to Sandpoint...
