Background:
The Radulescu family settled in Magnimar two generations ago, when Ziomara Radulescu had a vision of the empyreal lord Falayna that inspired her to escape her abusive parents. Given that Ziomara had no talent or desire for combat, she decided to honor the Warrior's Ring by becoming a jeweler. Her daughter Malena and son-in-law Andrezi followed in her footsteps, both in the family business and venerating Falayna. Their son Adalabero did the same, but their daughter Zenaida was different.
Zenaida had recurring dreams of battle against all manner of monsters. They culminated in a particularly vivid dream of a beautiful woman clad in armor, dazzling rings on all her fingers. "You have a warrior's heart, Zenaida. Find a mentor to train you in the art of combat, go forth to defend those who cannot fight, and I will always be with you." She gave her own sword to the young girl and the dream ended. Like any good Varisian girl, Zenaida told her parents and grandmother about the dream, for Varisian culture places great stock in the meaning of dreams. Her grandmother recognized the description of the armored woman as Falayna. Obviously, this meant Zenaida was destined for the path of the divine warrior. Andrezi and Malena were worried- this was not what they had in mind for their precious daughter!- but they weren't willing to fight the will of their patron deity. Falayna had done their family a favor by helping Ziomara escape years ago, and now the debt was coming due. (That's not actually how Falayna intended to come across, but that's how the Radulescus saw it.) Since the Warrior's Ring doesn't have an organized presence in Magnimar, the family went to the temple of Iomedae and explained their situation to the chaplain, Tira Ronnova. Tira was surprised, but given that Falayna is also a force for good, agreed to let Zenaida join her trainees without converting to Iomedae's worship. Not all of the priests or novices agreed with the young Varisian's presence, but Tira's authority and Zenaida's willingness to work hard quieted most of the whispers. She proved to have a talent for both the sword and spellcasting. Zenaida wasn't the best at bookwork, but she applied herself there with just as much zeal as she did her sword lessons, discovering a love of history in the process. After a few years the church deemed Zenaida sufficiently trained. She could always improve, of course, but the best place to do so was the battlefield. So she let both local law enforcement and the Varisian community know that she was able and willing to go out and defend Magnimar's outlying towns and villages from whatever threats they might face. Zenaida has been an unofficial roving troubleshooter for two years now. Lately she's heard that Sandpoint's sheriff is in town looking for help with a goblin problem. Sounds like a job for a warpriest! Appearance:
Zenaida is a short but muscular Varisian woman, with her people's usual tan skin and thick black hair. Her large eyes are a startling shade of gold. She keeps her hair long and usually pinned around her head in a crown braid under her helmet. When traveling or expecting trouble, Zenaida wears a finely crafted set of full plate, with gold-washed ring decorations on several of the gauntlets' fingers. Her shield is painted with a woman's beringed hand holding a longsword aloft, on a field of violet. She bears a longsword and dagger on her belt, with a longbow and arrows on her back.
When relaxing, Zenaida favors comfortable, practical clothing in bright shades of pink, violet, green, and blue according to her people's belief in the properties of colors. She always wears at least one ring, usually more, along with earrings and other jewelry. For special occasions she wears her kapenia, a long and intricately embroidered scarf that details her family history in its designs. Personality:
Zenaida delights in defying popular stereotypes of church warriors. She works hard, fights hard, and plays hard. Her idea of a fun evening out includes good food, good beer, music and dancing. Optimistic and cheerful, Zenaida only turns serious when it's a matter of life and death. She considers it part of her divine mission from Falayna to help women in trouble. If a female enemy refuses to back down, though, she'll smite her just as hard as anyone else. To do otherwise would be an insult to her opponent's skill.
Unusually for a Varisian, Zenaida has little talent for music or dancing. (That doesn't stop her from trying though, especially when she has a few beers on board.) Her artistic side manifests in her jewelry making hobby, which is also a form of devotion to Falayna, Warrior's Ring. She is also an amateur history buff. Family and Friends:
Andrezi and Malena Radulescu: Zenaida's parents. They are jewelers in Magnimar, carrying on a tradition started by Malena's mother. Both are very proud of their daughter, although they do wish she would find a nice man and get married.
Adalabero Radulescu: Zenaida's older brother, journeyman jeweler. He's being groomed to take over the family business. He thinks Zenaida is foolish for risking her life in battle when she could show her devotion to Falayna by making jewelry, like the rest of the family. When the chips are down, though, he'll support her. Denessia Korvaski: Zenaida's younger sister. Denessia got the Varisian wanderlust in spades, so she became a traveling merchant. She married into a wandering Varisian family and now has several children. They make an effort to stop in Magnimar for major holidays and spend time with the Radelescus. Chaplain Tira Ronnova: Leader of the church of Iomedae in Magnimar. Given Falayna's lack of an organized church in the area, Tira agreed to train Zenaida in combat and spellcasting. Zenaida still keeps in touch with her mentor. Alika Dunmorrow: A cleric of Iomedae who was trained alongside Zenaida. Alika is mixed Chelaxian and Varisian, and sympathized with the racism that Zenaida often experienced. The two became fast friends and sparring partners. Sometimes Alika comes with Zenaida to deal with problems outside Magnimar. |
