Background:

Zariah never knew her mother. The story that she was told was that eight months after a drunken night in a tavern, her father, a washed up adventurer and former guard of the Palace district, was awakened in the middle of the night by the woman he had slept with, appearing in the midst of his hearth to lay a baby and a strange bladed whip at the foot of his bed before vanishing into the flames. She spoke only one word. Zariah. He assumed it was the child's name.

Though he was a drunken fool, he was a superstitious fool, the thought of what would happen to him should he harm the newborn girl, obviously touched by the gods, overriding his desire to simply do away with her. Yet as she grew, barely cared for, he came to hate her more and more, the thing that had taken away his "promising" future and saddled him with a daughter he didn’t want. Still he feared that should he do anything to directly harm her he would suffer.

He withheld affection, made her scrape for his approval, and exploited her talents, which were many. Taking advantage of his heritage, he made sure that the girl was trained to perform, dance, charlatanry, "fortune telling," she learned all these things from a talented street performer living in the narrows with her daughter. Around that time she also met up with a group of likeminded street children led by the bold brothers Katallin and Kazital.

And yet she flourished. Her dances were a thing of unimaginable beauty and passion, her telling seemed to always carry a glimmer of truth. Ironically it was her success, and the fact that her lout of a father squandered her hard earned gold, that eventually bought her freedom, as he drank himself into an early grave.

Set adrift on the streets of The Bazaar, Zariah survived through a combination of cunning and charm, often finding herself in some of the most dangerous parts of the city, often even venturing into Dust Town, areas rarely frequented by upstanding citizens.

It was at this point that she truly became part of what was now essentially a gang, run by the brothers, adopting Asasha, the daughter of the woman who taught her to dance and read fortunes as a little sister. The times the group spent together are amongst her most pleasant memories, but alas this too passed.

During one of their performances while hoisting Asasha overhead Zariah felt the fire and passion of her movements explode into something else. Abandoning the practiced routine, she gave herself over to the sensation building within her, heedless of her friend’s concern for the variation from their usual movements.

Suddenly she was engulfed in flames, yet completely unharmed. Not so for Asasha, The young girl was badly burned along her neck and down her upper back. Horrified, Zariah rushed her to a local witch who often provided cures for street performers and prostitutes. While the actual damage was healed the scarring was not, a fact that Zariah carries guilt for with her to this day. In some way her burgeouning magic had marked her dear friend, a scar that the witch said she was meant to carry. The witch woman also had a message for Zariah, her power was a gift from Sekhmet, power to burn those that would harm her, power to change her fate.

After that their act changed, while Asasha held no ill will towards Zariah, her scarring left her self-conscious and she switched to pickpocketing the onlookers as Zariah danced.

Alas, Asasha was forced to disappear from the city after a noble killed her mother and their little band split up, first with one brother going away for five years then returning before they both set off. Alone again Zariah sought solace in her burgeoning power and a growing call.
Through the cold winters she discovered the one thing that would continue to fascinate her throughout her entire life. Fire.

Giver of warmth and life, destroyer of any careless enough not to show it respect, fire seemed to speak to her as she gazed into it, in fact she was truly able to interpret the sputtering crackle and popping as a language, one that seemed ingrained in her brain.

She could feel the call of fire, a pull that tugged at her soul and filled her dreams. Earning her way performing in taverns and camps alike, her enchanting "fire dance" often performed swathed in flame and little else, generating both gold and popularity, she made her way to a degree of noteriety in the city catching the attention of many a minor noble, and the hate of more than a few wives, one of whom would frame her for theft after inviting her to perform at thier villa for her husband's nameday.

And so she was given a choice by the magister, lashes and imprisonment or debt. She chose debt.

But she was fire, she would not be contained long.

Description:

Enticingly femminine, darkly mysterious, as alluring as a flame, these are but a few of the terms used to describe Zariah. Her beauty is as unnerving as it is enticing, a blatant smoky eroticism that carries an unearthly quality, from her husky voice to her mesmerizing walk and the faint scent of burnt cedarwood that wafts by in her presence.

This unearthly aura is only heightened by the fact that her eyes, an odd flickering amber in hue, seem to constantly have smoke swirling in them, a sight that few can gaze upon for very long.

Tanned skin with a brozed tone complements her smoky black hair, which seems to dance and flicker when she is excited, the entire package rendering her unforgettble.

Personality:

A word often used to describe Zariah’s nature would be passionate. A sensate with a streak of hedonism, she believes in living life as fully as possible, experiencing everything as intensely as she is capable and having as few regrets as possible.

This last part however is not nearly as real in practice as in theory, as her almost mercurial impulsiveness often leads to poor decisions in the “heat of the moment.”

Acutely aware of the effect she has on most men and more than a few women, she never finds herself lacking for attention or companionship. Seductive yet tough when the need arises, Zariah displays an entrancing confidence, often leaving others wanting to fulfill any desire she expresses, yet this all covers a fragility she keeps hidden, a sense of loss, abandonment and a lack of belonging and acceptance deeply rooted in the circumstances of her past.
