"Chatty little fellow, isn't he.." Zamothis grins as Urm talks nonsensically. "I say we get a little distance from the temple, have ourselves a breather, and then make it back towards the boat. It was a bit of a hard stroll getting up here, and I don't want to chance being late tomorrow with how nervous our crew were being near the island."
Ok, I'm sold. Had actually forgotten all about that spell and it still being in effect. Zamothis attacks the nearest of the enemy, the tip of his sword flashing out past his shield. Attack v 112%: 1d100 ⇒ 101d6 + 1d2 ⇒ (4) + (1) = 5 First potential Sp Effect: Maximize damage. Second potential effect: Choose location - head. Edit: Though this might be the next cycle, up to you. I did more or less declare earlier that he was retreating. :P
Yeah, I had considered Outmaneuver until I saw his evade skill. :) I had somewhat overlooked option 2, though that was mostly because I thought it was just for changing weapon ranges, not larger movements like leaving engagement. Good to know! Since Z had already called out for Anathaym and the others to retreat to more advantageous terrain, he will follow through with his own directions and take Option 2 - though he will insist it is a "Tactical repositioning" rather than "running away". Sounds more heroic that way. ;) Zamothis steps back from the oncoming foe, drawing them back nearer the entrance as he looks for either a narrower passage to keep them at bay, or for Anathaym to join him and make the fight two against three rather than three on one.
The second the natives charge, Zamothis plunges his sword into Oora's neck. His shield rises a heartbeat later to ward off the spear. Attack Oora v 112: 1d100 ⇒ 31
block: 1d100 ⇒ 7 Back to the entrance! Use the walls so they can't surround or flank us!"
Does it appear from his body language and such that the leader is attempting to get them to attack? Well this is a damn fine predicament. Zamothis growls under his breath. The veteran's eyes seem to rove everywhere at once in attempt to keep the scattered natives in view. "As she said," he tries again. "This woman's life for the lifting of the curse. That, or you and your priestess are about to have a very bad day, friend."
"Halt! One more step and she dies!" Zamothis cries, the heavy tip of his sword placed at the back of the prone priestess' neck. "That goes for you too, friend," he says a finger pointing towards the cultist trying to outflank the party from behind, as much to bring the skulking figure to the attention of his comrades as in any hope the cultist would retreat. If they do not stop, Zamothis kills Oora and prepares to defend himself. Shield continues to passively block.
Zamothis silently thrusts his shortsword forward pressing his attack against the man he wounded. 112%: 1d100 ⇒ 18
If he wins an effect, he will again choose location: head Passively blocking with the shield: L Arm, Head, Chest, Abdomen Also, movement is a little funky in this ruleset (to me anyway ;). If we were to say step back a meter or three in order to give ourselves more time (if needed) to deal with the natives before the statue arrives, what kind of action would that be?
Yeah you're right. I kinda flubbed that one up. He will use the sword since I imagine in this sort of situation the shield would probably be more useful than an extra few inches of spear haft. Thanks. I do have a question though. Did they attempt to parry our blows? If not (or if they failed) would we have generated special effects against them? (Well maybe not Anathaym since she killed hers). And the converse is of equal concern, if we don't parry, since they succeeded, they get a special effect against us, correct? Or was that how they were closing distance?
Moving as one with Anathaym, Zamothis steps forward, his own spear angling down until the point is perpendicular to his body. "You should have bargained, Oora." His shield rises into a full fighting stance. passive block with shield, Left arm, head, abdomen, chest As they advance, he growls under his breath to Anathaym, "We need to get to that priestess before she brings something else to life!"
"Well." Zamothis says, his voice firm and ringing out in the echoing silence left int the wake of the priestess' words. "Perhaps you will be kind enough to educate us regarding yourself and this merry fellowship! Is it equally an act of worship of your many-limbed goddess for her servants to be on the receiving end of such "blessed vengeance"? Or only to meet it out to others?" As he speaks, he takes a few steps into the room, the big, armored warrior brandishing his spear threateningly and once more placing himself between potential enemies and his less armored companions. "This man has himself done nothing to you. What is your price for lifting the curse? Or were your words your final say in the matter? Consider carefully, woman! For in my experience, vengeance has a funny way of twisting about to bite the hand of she who seeks it." Not sure how many turns the above would count for, but he will delay for the remainder - intending either to interrupt the priestess should she cast a spell, or else save actions for defense should the natives attack.
Zamothis too notices Trimostones' troubles and calls a halt, in part so his friend can rest a few moments, but also so they could take stock of the situation now that their 'guides' had fled. "Seems we have nearly arrived. We could attempt to scramble past that debree, or go and knock on the front door. Perhaps before we decide that, you can tell us more regarding what it is we hope to achieve, my friend?"
Upon hearing the news, Zamothis simply grunts and shakes his head. "We should still keep watch tonight. Just in case." Assuming nothing untoward occurs during the night: The warrior awakens with the sun and spends a few minutes caring for his weapons before grabbing a quick bite and preparing himself for the day's labors.
Zamothis silently keeps one wary eye on the native and the other on their surroundings in case their new friend's companions came back.
Perception if needed, vs 76: 1d100 ⇒ 61
As another clarification, were all the natives fleeing? I thought it was just the one nearest the impaled guy. Yep. You are totally right about the combat styles. I guess I had it pictured in my mind that Zamothis fought with spear and shield like a greek hoplite, but he's actually built more like a roman legionary with shortsword and shield. So in that case, when he's wielding weapons in two different styles simultaneously like he is, does everything go off the lower ranked combat style, like a skill cap? I can look the answer to that up later, but I don't have my pdf available atm. Also to keep it 'honest' I think given what Zamothis saw and knew at the start, he would have reached just as he did for the shield first, making the bow unusable. Instead, he will simply move forward in front of Kara to interpose himself between her and any further attack, should one come.
Sensing that the moral of the enemy way well be wavering after the sling stone seems to miraculously miss Kara while Anathaym's spear makes a bloody ruin of her sister's attacker's face, Zamothis roars out a battle cry and engages the nearest of their attackers. His spear lashes out with deadly efficiency... Bronze Mercenary 112-12=100%: 1d100 ⇒ 5 If I understand correctly, moving to engage doesn't take an action? (Seems a little strange so hopefully I understood that right). Also, I think that may be a crit success! Also, do you want us to wait for the opposing character's defense before we roll damage / locations, etc? Or go ahead and roll for it in the original post with the understanding that it might get superseded?
I believe if you're not engaged, perception is a free action: 1d100 ⇒ 89 vs 76 Zamothis attempts to ascertain what weapons the enemy carries beyond the spears they just threw, but his attention is too divided by grabbing the shield he is reaching for to get a good enough look at them. The huge hoplite shield is brought up, covering his shield arm, head, chest, and abdomen.
