From a young age, Yse stood out among the other children in the Broken Tusk following in a number of ways. Born into Moose House, her parents competent but hardly exceptional foragers and hunters, she swiftly developed an intuitive understanding of the unforgiving boreal realm in which she grew up, and always felt quite at ease in her inhospitable environs. What was more, perhaps by dint of counting some exile from Icemark or Irrisen among her distant ancestors, Yse proved extraordinarily unperturbed by the cold; where other children took care to swaddle themselves in stifling furs to keep warm, she was discovered on more than one occasion playing in the snow clad in little more than a shift, happy as could be.
As Yse reached adulthood, she showed little interest in following in her parents’ exact footsteps. At heart she clearly was a rover, fond of striking out on her own ahead of the following to appraise the lie of the land while it yet lay undisturbed by the arrival of the greater clan. At the same time, despite all her solitary wanderings Yse displayed no small aptitude for nurturing the bonds between her clanmates: mediating between them, treating their injuries and diseases, sharing her wisdom and insight if desired, and making new followers feel welcome. It seemed likely that she would rise to a position of leadership in the following one day, but equally possible that she might come into her own as a scout and pioneer. Her life took an unexpected turn during one of her recent forays, however, when she managed to become genuinely lost. Afterwards, Yse would discover that she had unwittingly happened upon a tainted stretch of land, one still stained by centuries-old dark magic, but all she realised at the time was that some malign will was foiling her every attempt to make her way back whence she had come. The stars ran together in strange constellations overhead, and the hills and gorges around her seemed to shift whenever she glanced away from them; there was an unsettling ashen quality to the snow under her bare feet. At best, she soon came to fear, she was doomed to wander in circles forever. Trusting to her instincts, Yse abandoned her attempts to escape and instead made for a sparse pine grove on a hilltop she had glimpsed in the distance. It felt merely foreboding, rather than outright foul like the rest of that blighted expanse, but her thoughts were troubled all the same as she settled in for the night. She dwelt on the land, on the connection she had always believed she had to it, on how she suddenly felt as though she might not truly be a part of it after all. Yet even such inner turmoil could not stave off sleep forever – and when she woke from her uneasy dreams the following morning, she found she was no longer alone. Later that day, the Broken Tusks were beginning to fear that Yse might have fallen victim to misadventure when she came striding into their camp accompanied by a strange beast. Though caprine in form, it was just as obviously something more than an ordinary animal; Yse explained to the following that the creature was a spirit of the land, a supernatural entity trapped for centuries by the same curse that had ensnared her. The lone grove she’d sought out had been its prison, the worst of the blight kept at bay there by its potent though slumbering presence. It had been Yse’s arrival however, and her own deep connection to the natural world, that had loosened the entity’s occult shackles sufficiently to set it free at long last. Together they had managed to escape, leaving the cursed expanse behind… for the time being. The two of them were inseparable now, Yse told the Broken Tusks. She and Watches-over-Bitter-Dawns, as the being’s name loosely translated from the Sylvan tongue, had much in common, including their profound love of these trackless lands. They both considered themselves the Realm’s children – almost literally so, in Watcher’s case – and were determined to work together to safeguard them and their peoples. To do so they would utilise each other’s strengths, with Yse drawing on a portion of the entity’s magical prowess and Watcher benefiting from the Kellid’s ability to walk freely among her kind and deal with them as only a human could. In doing so they would be able to achieve much more than either of them on their own, their union a sum greater than its parts. Their auspicious meeting also caused Yse to consider more thoroughly the path she wanted her life to take. Though she remains an integral element of the following’s social fabric, she has decided to undergo formal training as a scout as well; as confident as she is in her instinctive comprehension of the frozen wastes that are her home, it stands to reason that there is much she may yet learn from Wipa, Panuaku and the other talented trackers and hunters among the Tusks. Yse is a native Kellid in her late twenties, with the dark hair and tan complexion typical of her people. Though she is not physically imposing per se her bearing is stern and dignified, and she commands respect with little more than an august look or tilt of her head. Serving as a kind of envoy for the Broken Tusk following, she makes it a point to dress in fine, fur-hemmed garb that is ceremonial as much as practical in design. Simultaneously at odds with and complementing this stately look is Yse’s complete eschewal of footwear: an avid wanderer and explorer of the northlands’ wintry wilderness since her childhood years, she has always sought a close connection with the Realm, and walking barefoot across ice and snow seems to trouble her not at all. Her severity of aspect is no mere façade. Though Yse is not entirely without a sense of humour, she rarely says something she does not mean and is known among the Broken Tusks for her honesty and forthrightness. Her unflinching determination never to take sides, however, means that she has few close friends in the following – it has been said of Yse that she would grant even a lover no special consideration when adjudicating a dispute, and such staunch impartiality is not a trait that endears her to everybody. She is, in general, an orthodox-minded person who cherishes the Broken Tusks’ heritage and their harsh but unpretentious way of life; as for the fractious circumstances of the following’s genesis, Yse is grudgingly willing to concede that there is a time and place for such a blatant breaking with tradition, as long as doing so serves the greater good.
