Hey Sharaya, the replacement sheet of pawns arrived in the mail two days ago :-). Thank you!

Hi Winterthorn,

I'm sorry to hear that your pawn box was mispacked! Please send us an email to confirm the best shipping address for you (preferably with a link back to this thread for reference) and we should be able to send you a replacement sheet.

Thanks!
~Sharaya

Wow, that was fast! Thanks Sharaya. I have sent my email today :-)

Scarab Sages

Hi,

A number of months ago I bought the Monster Codex Pawn box set (PZO1015) from my FLGS and recently I discovered an packaging error: I found two identical sheets of vampire pawns, but no sheet of orc pawns. Sadly the various orcs are more useful to me than the vampires!

So is there a way for me to get the sheet with orcs pawns (if I recall correctly, #141 to #148)? Do I send Paizo the extra vampire sheet in exchange?

I am located in Ottawa, Canada.

Thanks!

Scarab Sages

Yaaay! Thanks the release! :-D

Maybe we'll see hints of a non-human empire somewhere? Perhaps a reptilian realm in the Arcadian subtropics that human Arcadian kingdoms trade with, or wage war against...? (Just brainstorming some wishes :-D)

Scarab Sages

Looking forward to this, but...

$2 price increase is a downer, up to $14.99 US from $12.99 US. The Canadian dollar is weaker too so I'm looking at paying $18+ CDN. Ugh.

Scarab Sages

Good one! I definitely see the usefulness of this product. Could have used it many times in refereeing previous games. So I'll be on the look out for this.

Did wizards ever have an alignment restriction?

That would be funny actually.
Lawful wizards, neutral arcanists, chaotic sorcerers.

Not that I recall, but the training background published in some editions suggested to me and my friends alignment leanings - predicated on the notion that bookishness and self-discipline tends to favour personalities with lawful values, I suppose stemming from an assumption that values and temperment correlate? Thus sorcerous power was linked to emotion, and therefore chaotic values. YMMV

While I would not want official alignment restrictions, I think a brewed up society or dominion where all wizards are lawful, arcanists neutral, and sorcerers chaotic, has fun RP potential - especially for a PC who breaks the mold/violates the prevailing law/customs...

Scarab Sages

Okay. Sold! This looks like it will be fun to examine and try out the twists and changes offered.

Excellent! Very logical product for the Campaign Setting. I'm looking forward to this one :-)

(I hope there is a modest pawn product to follow it, as that could be handy too.)

Yes, James Doohan passed away July 2005. (Ed: ninja'd)

I saw the news about Leonard Nimoy's passing yesterday and I still find it hard to believe. Perhaps it's because, I will remember Spock, always.

I would guess yes, because on all matters concern a being with a soul, androids follow the same paradigm as all intelligent humanoids. One way to look at it is that an android is an awakened biological construct, much like the D&D 3.5 Warforged from Eberron are awakened mechanical constructs.

Spoiler:
Androids can be any type of undead. Vampiric ones would favour the clear watery blood of other Androids rather than the messy red blood of humans/humanoids.

Well "advanced" doesn't necessarily mean better, and the observation is predicated on how things look at the moment. I am a Pathfinder fan who has enjoyed many other game systems too, and it will be interesting to see how D&D 5th grows in complexity.

Kudos to Champions, Marathoners, and Dedicated! I'm a Star (did 100+ pairs today) and my brain is already fried!

Scarab Sages Star Voter Season 6

I did my duty. I voted over 100 today -- carefully read every entry, and never voted "both" -- which took a few hours. I focused upon whether the concepts were viable for a basic fantasy game with PF and I saw plenty items that were interesting and evocative, and even few that were humourous (yet effective).

Good luck to all those who made submissions! :-)

Edit: forgot to add, very little was annoying so I suppose the "bonkers" inducing entries have been finally culled.

Scarab Sages

Oh my goodness this thread has really gone off the rails! What a monstrous train wreck!! What the heck do the Wright Brothers have to do with a Reverend, a President, and Gay Marriage?

Scarab Sages

I picked up my hard copy at my FLGS (Ottawa, Canada) on Friday -- they'd just arrived that afternoon :-) -- but the great irony is RL hasn't allowed me the time to look it over all weekend! :-( lol

Nonetheless, I've had a few peeks and I really like what I've seen so far.

Scarab Sages

When the last Space Shuttle completed its mission, I felt very sad, because an exciting era in space science has come to an end.

I also felt a twitch of foreboding: that America appears to be steering itself towards a New Dark Age given the rise of religious hyperbole in the media at the behest of politicians and big business who prefer the masses be kept entertained, distracted, and otherwise ignorant. While not a ubiquitous problem -- yet -- I see blind religiosity is being exploited to undermine democracy. An educated population is too dangerous for the rich and powerful... The manipulation of the general public is a common evil in human history, and the recent attacks on science and education seem like an intensification of the practice.

The good news is people are catching on. More and more people are asking hard questions of those who seek authority... Personally, people who want to be in charge too much are definitely not fit for the job. Or more specifically, leaders have to earn the trust of followers, and not demand it.

D&D Next looks very retro to me right now -- but it is only playtest material to date.

I'm about ready to call it a night, being 12:08 a.m. now. I'm thinking I'll watch a short flick or an episode or two of B5 before bed.

Hmmm ok, how about this? There are many of you I’ve spoken to across these messageboards I’ve found to be deep and interesting people and wouldn’t mind being “internet buddies” with. How about we keep chatting here and there and when we get to the point we feel like we know each other pretty well and are friends we can exchange email addresses and then I’ll freely tell you all you want to know about me and send you pictures of myself, my friends, my habitats, and anything else you ask nicely for =D.

For those of you who have no interest in being my pal or who just can’t wait, here is a startlingly accurate artist’s depiction of me for you to enjoy instead!

LMAO!! When one flirts one never knows what one will catch! Well played :^)

Edit: it was my friendly yank on the chain. Nonetheless I wonuldn't be surprised to see a call to folks to present themselves on FB. I am there already but I facebook -- apparently it's a verb now too -- 2 or 3 times a month because I have more interesting things to do with my life than to catch-up and respond to a gazillion inane comments a day. Clue number ?:

Page 55 in Giants Revisited speaks of Storm Giants on pilgrimages to the region of the Eye and actually riding the waves of the storm and diving into the depths of it and then returning to a pleasure palace "for feasting and luxurious entertainments". They're obviously not harmed by venturing into the storm...

Edit: I think there is a profound absence of the influence of Evil with respect to the Eye of Abendedgo, and I wonder if it exists as a metaphysical counter to the presence of the Worldwound, waiting for something significant to occur before manifesting any changes or whatever.

Scarab Sages

Before I forget: I have have a new level of respect for Paizo after reading James Sutter's post about the strong LGBT representation in the company's staff. That is, to me, very welcoming to read! :-D

Love, hugs and kisses to all! (Okay, I confess to being a wee bit lonely lately!)

I like the characters depicted on the cover -- each one interesting and they appear to be an alert and effective adventuring team. Evocatively quite cool.

Are Wanderers shadowy humans? I ask because I'm thinking about what WotC did with the "Shadowfell" in 4E.

In any case, I'll definitely keep my eye out for this one to arrive at my FLGS.

Winterthorn, I can assure you, there is a wide and wonderful gay world out there filled with men with all sorts of interests, including gaming.

How can you meet them though, that is the question and one I cannot honestly answer. In my own life the men I’ve had relationships with have not been flamboyant club bound partiers but friends of friends disconnected from the scenes where we normally congregate. It helps that I am both clear about who I am with everyone I meet and that I make it obvious you can approach me if you like me. The being entirely out of the closet isn’t actually the greatest idea for many men though(at least in relation to groups where it doesn’t really matter a lot for them to know) and if you don’t trust the gamer group to handle it well don’t do it.

I can believe it -- about guys beyond the stereotypes. But oh my it *is* hard to connect locally for gaming. And you're right: there plenty of social situations it does matter, or require being "out", and then you're left with using gaydar. LOL. Oh man, my gaydar sucks -- if gaydar is the shiny new iPad(TM), mine's an Etch-a-sketch(TM)!!

Could it be that they're homophobic because they've never interacted with (out) gay people?

Maybe you could be the "poster child" that cures them of their homophobia? It's well known that people fear what they don't know, but they know you, so it might turn the ideas they have about gay people upside down if you told them.
I do have to say that I'm not gay, so I can't put myself 100% into your situation (and I, of course, don't know the people you game with) - I do have other things that I don't disclose at first to everyone, primarily because of social issues/taboos/perceptions, so I'm not totally unfamiliar with the situation either - so take that into consideration. But it's a suggestion. :-)

Poster child? Oh-oh! At 49? LOL :-)

You know what's ironic? I had the courage to participate in pride parades in the 1990's, and even be "out there" at these events with my LGBT peers, directing traffic, welcoming bystanders to our outdoor stage shows, interacting with police (who were actually friendly to us) and collecting tickets to events. But confronting old friends? That's tough because I don't want to 'cause a scene at the table. Maybe that's silly, but alas, all too human?

With newer gaming friends, I think can still open up things since the social investment is new and I don't know them well enough to know if they've have LGBT relatives, or friends, or co-workers they are comfortable with. So I've considered that as a plan to establish a comfortable group.

The other side needs work too, methinks. Finding local "gaymers" into rpgs still looks like a major challenge...

Scarab Sages

I have both books, and the Inner Sea World Guide hard cover updates the material in the older C.S. book. I hope that helps.

Scarab Sages

With respect to OP: this is an interesting topic for me. Here I am, it's 11:00 p.m. up in Ottawa, I'm sittin' at home reading stuff online... and thinking now.

For years I've being stuck in a tug of war between gaming, and gay life. In my experience I cannot get any overlap in a social comfort zone. (I'm tired and the eloquence ain't there tonight!) I've had affairs and boyfriends in one world and gamer friends in another -- with tension between the two pulling me in opposite directions. Especially my time. I'm out to most co-workers, and to my folks, but not to everyone: my gaming friends and acquaintances, some of whom I've a 20+ year history socializing with, have no clue because I've never found gamers where I live that I felt comfortable being myself, and I haven't met one LGBT gamer in person either.

Online? Yeah. In person? Never.

Correction, in socializing at a LGBT function about a year ago, I met a guy who was a WoW fan. I don't play online rpgs, but I've heard there are some LGBT groups out there. He's the first "gaymer" I met in person after all these years. Part of the problem is, my sharpest observations limited to gay men, very few gay men acknowledge interest in things beyond the stereotypes of cruising, partying, and going to the gym, pursuing careers, and spending money on fashion, etc.

Until they hit 40. (Yeah, there's something wry in that.) Then they like antiques!

Okay, so finding LGBT friends locally, particularly gay men, to socialize with in a gaming context has been really difficult. Well, that's what Fate's thrown at me.

The other side, my gaming friends, they're straight -- or play str8 because they're so deep in the closet they may be stuck in there all their lives -- everyone has to forge their way free on their own terms -- and some of these gamer friends are either colossal homophobes, or just clueless. They're great gamers, but I'm the one who has to cringe in silence when table talk strays to things, um, heterosexual.

So I feel like I have to choose between two worlds.

(Gawd, does anything I say tonight make sense?)

Added wrinkle: I was into gaming as a young adult as a way to distract myself from the tensions of being in my own closet. It was one outlet to keep my mind off of reality. So when I came out at 29/30, I was already an established gamer. But I carefully kept a wall up between the old me and the new me, 'cause in the late 1980's early 1990's, things were more difficult for us than they are today.

Um, that's what I can share for the moment about being gay and being a gamer.

Freehold DM wrote:
Shifty, must we be on opposite sides of every issue?!??!

Because you choose to be arbitrarily contrary?

It's true, I look forward to the day when the subject becomes a non-subject in the way we don't feel the need to converse about whether the sky is blue, and indeed it becomes a general day to day non-issue where the notion of where one puts ones private parts and with whom raises no eyebrows nor interest, and indeed no one really cares apart from those who might be interested in joining in.

I'm hoping for Sexuality threads to make about as much sense as a blue eyed thread, or 'people who drink water' thread.

Now if you are saying that you would like it to remain always a conversation piece where people feel the need to 'identify' (or worse, feel compelled to conceal) their sexuality, then I would suggest you are advocating that you are maintaining the status quo.

I'd personally like an end to the stupid 'politics' around the issue - you are suggesting you would like to maintain them.

In that case I welcome you to the opposition.

Won't be long now until the final hurdle of gay marriage gets crossed, and then thats pretty much the end of the battle won in this country.

Well good news: it'll be a non-subject once society at large has changed it's attitude. Until then, you'll just have to put with occasional public displays of LGBT people reaching out to each other in a sometimes very hostile world.

Oh, before I forget, your line about "private parts" wreaks of misunderstanding: by fixating upon physical intimacy you totally ignored the most important factor about same-sex relations, you ignored love.

Scarab Sages

Here's maybe an odd idea: Infamous Monsters of Golarion -- a Player's Guide to defeating some of the more infamous critters of the world all written from the point of view of adventurers. So no Bestiary info, only legendary info and the equipment, spells and magic items commonly believed/discretely shared by historical NPC's. Of course the info is "incomplete" but that's the most info PCs would probably know having grown up with tales of legendary beasts and learned from their families, mentors, or teachers. I would expect the vast majority of monsters would NOT be in this book, but I figure there are a few dozen that are infamous "known" threats to civilization... It's essentially a monster hunting guide for the players that I'm suggesting.

Scarab Sages

Yes! Now we're talkin'. I hope we'll see specialized options for dragonslayers/monsterslayers! (Beyond the slaying adventurers do anyways, lol)

I like the idea of making minis for familiars. I don't really like the idea of incorporating familiars with character sculpts as was done in this set. Its still a nice looking mini, but I would rather have the ability to pair up my own familiar with my character's mini.

A removable familiar would be pretty neat though if possible. Like the character still comes with the familiar but it isn't glued to the base it just sits on top

That would be a neat trick to have a removable familiar! But alas I bet it would be both complicated and expensive to produce, because I don't think it be viable if there was only one kind while there are dozen different kinds of familiars to choose from in the game. Cool idea though.

I took one look at that awesome Rune Giant on Friday and my jaw almost fell off. It deserves a shout:

THAT IS ONE FANTASTIC FIGURE*

Can't wait for my FLGS receive their order this summer... I wonder how tall is it on the table? 11 or 12 inches? It would make a great conversation piece if well displayed in one's gaming/rec room!

*: truly it is too grand to be referred to as a "mini"!!

Nice! I haven't seen a big city book since Kaer Maga - "City of Strangers", which I luv muchly - so I welcome this new one to add to the collection :-)

Scarab Sages

Shem, I have considered subscribing, but there's a catch: I'm in Canada and that means extra costs as well as worry about the various shippers mangling/damaging my books and soft cover paperbacks over the border. My FLGS gets PF books at competitive prices such that I usually pay in Canadian dollars the same Americans pay in the US. (The currencies are often at par lately so I'm happy.) The only real drawback is I don't have a PDF copy of any of the PF books.

Edit: I also gain a 10% "loyal customer discount" at my FLGS.

Scarab Sages

Officially? No. In the PF games I run? Absolutely! Honestly, I never liked the Summoner base class, and it's variants like the Synthesist do nothing for me other than make me cringe. (Having said that, I can see it has potential for a weird NPC villain! But for players? Not in the games I GM please!)

Scarab Sages

I absolutely can't wait! I'll pounce on the first copy I find at my FLGS!

Scarab Sages

I'd like to see some new monsters that, although generic, would fit well on some of the other worlds in Paizo's Campaign Setting.

Or how about templates that help us convert critters to be weird analogues of "normal" monsters and thus potential native to, for example, "jungle" worlds, "desert" worlds or "winter" worlds? Basically a few templates to help GMs flesh out critters for Sword and Planet games would be nice. Ex: "tauric" creatures of Akiton or hydra-like dinosaurs of Castrovel. (I'm sure there are better ideas than mine!)

If that fails, I hope we'll see a 64-page bestiary supplement specifically for the various planets of Golarion's home solar system ("Monsters from the Distant Worlds").

Scarab Sages

I think a dog is an excellent choice. Perhaps your GM can help you flesh out a medium size breed appropriate to both the campaign and your character?

Alternatively, as others have suggested, a bird of prey like a falcon or hawk that would be a uncommon but natural sight in an urban setting. (Would a big crow/raven fit better?) At least with the bird it has an easier time keeping up with your ranger's roof-top running! And it can serve as a aerial "spy" watching your back, etc. :-)
