Appearance:
William is a slim halfing man, standing at just over 3' with shaggy bond hair and striking green eyes. His calm and friendly demeanor can put almost anyone at ease with little more than a few words of his soft yet memorable voice.
He is usually wearing a close fitting coat of boiled leather underneath his cloak, neither of which are ever seen with even a speck of mud or dirt on them. The well crafted bow upon his back never leaves his side and the calluses on his right hand are a testimate to his skill with the weapon.

Background:
William Varrus was introduced to the violent side of the Iron Marches political landscape at a young age. When he was only 8, both of his parents were imprisoned by the Inquisition for collaborating with the Hand of Jorin. Up to this point William had been unaware that his parents had anything to do with the Hand, or even that it existed in the first place as they had attempted to shelter him from the harshness of the world. The outcome of these events was not entirely tragic as Andras, a human paladin of the Hand and close friend of William's parents, took him in and raised the halfling boy as if he were his own son.

From that point on the William's childhood was very different than the one he had known. Andras devoted himself to teaching the boy all he would need to know in order to survive in the Iron Marches and follow his own destiny. William was well trained in weaponry, stealth and the art of war by his always patient mentor. While he excelled in his study of strategy and had a natural talent for matters of stealth as well as a deadly aim with the bow, William found situations of close quarters combat best solved with his innate talents for subtlty and misdirection than force of arms.

The young halfling also developed a fine sense of storytelling as he could think of no more fufilling activity that listening to the tales told by Andras and his old comrads in arms as the reminisced. While other children were off playing, one could always find William sitting by the fireplace, drinking in every word of these adventures.

Upon reaching maturity, William decided that the time had come for him to set right the wrongs of his childhood. Andras pointed him towards the proper channels and offered his services to the Hand of Jorin. Over the next couple years William proved to be very resourceful. He took an official job as a hunter for one of the Hand's connections. Dispite his skill in archery, the young bard lacked the patience to enjoy hunting but the position afforded him two very useful privelages. It gives him the ability to travel while armed and armored without raising suspiscions and he is able to routinely slip away from the village for a day or more without question. This allowes him to exchange messages back and forth between various cells of the Hand and keep an eye on the varous dwarf patrols throughout the Marches. His quick tongue and fluid personality are usually enough to see him through any unpleasant situations that might arise.
