Letter to Janna - The Storm Maiden, dated May 13, 1986:
August Janna,

You have our most sincere and heartfelt apologies for the scene we created at the graduation ceremony. (However that knuckle dragging, no neck, uni-brow, mouth breathing, eunuch Breeler had it coming.)

Please, never believe we were angry with you. We most certainly were not. It pains us to admit to this, but we are afraid. Your graduation with honors means we are alone again. FluffyCuddles is worried we can't make it without your perceptive guidance. (He didn't really use the word 'perceptive' since he can't make the 'P' sound, but that's what he means.) Everyone iis out to get us here. They just want to see us fail. I don't think it is as bad as him, but I am also concerned.

We know, part of what the Academy is supposed to teach us is confidence in ourselves. But we are finding it difficult to remember we are usually right when everyone tells us we are always wrong. We will just have to remember the exemplar of our mentor Janna and muddle through somehow.

We are both really happy for you and confident that you will succeed in whatever you choose to do. FluffyCuddles was practically jumping with excitement when he was imagining you adventures.

Hope to meet up with you sometime in the future and share our tales over a pitcher of goat nog.

Again, sorry about the stains. I really thought the color would come out pretty easily with just a little methyethelketone.

Your friend, WS.

Official Letter to Mrs Spindlethwaite from the Academy Magicka in Reme, Dated Oct 11, 1986:
Mrs. Spindlethwaite,

I am aware that you wished for your son to follow in your footsteps and be a guard for the Academy. As a favor to you and your late husband for excellent service over the last couple decades, we really tried to make it work. I am afraid it will not be possible. The boy is too easily distracted. He can’t be trusted to pay attention to any task for any length of time. That is a trait totally unsuited to guard work.

If it was just that, we could try to see if he would grow or could be trained out of it. Unfortunately, that is not all of the problems. Half his squad wants to strangle him and his training officer wants him brought up on charges for assault. He is only getting out of that because none of them will admit what he did to them. I gather the trouble started over his ‘familiar.’

That is the last issue. Somewhere, the boy found a great big scorpion (or maybe spider). Now he walks around with it on his shoulder and says it is his familiar. As you know the Academy doesn't deal with silly hedge wizard familiars. We are an advanced institution. He goes absolutely bearzark if anyone says anything negative about it or tries to make him get rid of it. I hear he calls it ‘Snuggle Bunny’ or some such and is constantly whispering to it. It’s really rather creepy. I hate to say it, but there is something wrong in his head. Please have one of the priests look into it.

He’s bright and a nice enough kid. And he actually does have some magical talent somehow even though he doesn’t pay attention to instruction. And frankly the nightmare of that kid with any real arcane power is enough to wake me in a cold sweat.

The Academy owes your family a lot, but this just isn’t going to happen.

With regret, Commandant Renfro.

Note Home to Mother, dated Oct 12, 1986:
Mummers,

You’ll never guess what happened! Oh you’ll be so proud of us. We have already been graduated and promoted even though the training officers don’t like us very much. Isn’t it great! We are being assigned to guard Magister Neven the Enigmatic. Fluffy Cuddles and I are simply shivering with excitement!

We know it won’t be easy though. Why, first we even have to find him! Magister Neven is so enigmatic that no one knows where he is most of the time. I’ve heard he might have gone with High Priest Absythor to visit the shrine thingies. Isn’t that just a thing? Why would a magister go to a shrine? Everyone knows they don’t get their power from the gods. I guess there’s just no understanding the magisters until you is one.

Well we have to get to the searching. It is a grand responsibility. We’ll write as soon as we find the Magister.

Luvv ya Mummers!

Note to Janna the Storm Maiden, dated Oct 13, 1986:
Generous Janna,

You had to be the second person we told since it wouldn't have been possible without your example to guide me. Obviously you had to be second. I mean yes you have been incredibly important to our career. But I just had to tell Mummers first. I mean she raised me my through my whole childhood. Please don't be cross that she knew before you.

You know how the proctors never like me and FluffyCuddles and were always picking on us? Well, they didn't get away with it! They went too far and it came to the Commandant's attention. He was so impressed with our perseverance and fortitude for sticking to it and succeeding despite their abuse, that he rewarded us.

Well I say rewarded us. But you know what they say about the reward for doing a good job right? A harder job. We were given a great responsibility. We were awarded an advanced early graduation and an immediate assignment. We barely even had time to pick up our things before we were on the road.

We are being assigned to guard Magister Neven the Enigmatic. It is a stunning responsibility and a firm declaration of Commandant Renfro's confidence in our capabilities. Don't spread it around though. I think this may be a secret mission since he didn't give it to us in writing. A Hidden Mission if you will.

We know it won’t be easy though. First we even have to find him! Magister Neven is so enigmatic that no one knows where he is most of the time. I’ve heard he might have gone with High Priest Absythor to visit some lost shrine for some reason.

Well we have to get to the searching. It is a grand responsibility. We’ll write again when we've made some progress.

Thanks for believing in us, WS

Note to Little Wilt and the bug, dated Oct 16, 1986:
Little Wilt,

I know you probably hate that name, but I like it and I think it suits you.

I'll never know why you latched on to me like some mentor. well at least that is all it was...I hope. After all you have no idea what I was like before the academy. And my first couple of years were, shall we say, eventful.

Anyway, I guess congrats are in order, in any event, I am enroute to Fairhill to visit some acquaintances from my youth. perhaps your journeys will bring you to the area.

Gotta run, May the winds ever be at your back,

Janna

Whispered Conversation with FluffyCuddles:
Oh no! FluffyCuddles, I just realized we weren't told if our mission was supposed to be a secret or not?!? If Magister Neven the Enigmatic is hiding, maybe we aren't supposed to let anyone know we are looking for him. Whatever shall we do?
Yes, you're right of course. It would be safest to look for him on the sly like a fox. This is going to be even harder than we thought. It's a good thing they entrusted such a vital mission to us. I don't know who else could manage it.
We'll have to think of something else to tell people we are doing so they don't get suspicious of us. How should I know what to tell them? How is that my job, you're the sneaky one? What do you mean not that kind of sneaky. Well at least give me some ideas.
Tell them we're adventurers out to make our fortune? Oh come on! Who's going to believe something that silly?
I know. Let's say that Arden came to me in a vision and told me to find and assist his new high priest. And it might not even be lying. You remember that dream I had last week. Maybe it wasn't a dream. Maybe it really was a vision. I'll bet that's it. Arden knew I'd need a mission as cover for my mission so he sent me that vision. Yesss... The Vision Mission... Splendid.
We better head over to the temple district. Maybe someone there can tell us how to find a new high priest.
But first let's see what we can find out about the Hidden Mission. /spoiler]
.
[spoiler=recent history] The academy has a special group of fighter/wizards to assist and guard full wizards. Wilfort's parents were a moderately famous pair of such guards and instructors. Father was killed in the line of duty. His mother tried to get him into the same program to follow in their footsteps.
.
Wilfort got thrown out because he can't pay attention well enough to be a decent guard. He isn't a wizard (he is a witch) and has a creepy familiar. The Acdemy doesn’t encourage familiars (that is a crutch for common hedge wizards). Plus he isn't terribly sane. Think high functioning schizophrenic.
.
Wilfort believes he was graduated early not thrown out. The Commandant of the academy gave him the Hidden Mission to find Magister Neven the Enigmatic and protect him. 'Arden' (the dead god) gave him the Vision Mission to find his new High Priest and help him set up a new temple to Arden.
.
Other than FluffyCuddles his only friend was Janna - The Storm Maiden. She was polite to him a couple of times, so Wilfort began to think Janna and he were best pals. Janna was the upper class mentor whose stoic example helped him get through the grueling training and advanced graduation. Janna barely remembers Wilfort as ‘that one weird kidd that everyone talked about’ rather than a close friend.

.
appearance:
Before you stands a young adult Gnome. He stands hipshot with his shoulders thrown back as if he was posing while an artist painted his portrait. However, you have the impression this an unconscious mannerism not adopted specifically for this occasion.
.
His beard and hair are a rather shocking blue against his pale skin. His vest is a rather festive red and orange plaid. The shirt is sea green with yellow vertical pinstripes. The pantaloons are the reddish hue of fresh rust. Yet his footwear is worn military service boots. The vivid green of his eyes goes unnoticed amongst the remainder of the sartorial spectacle. This is a fellow that hasn’t be a color he doesn’t like.
.
He has a quiver holding a few javelins strapped to his backpack. He carries a trident in his left hand that he uses as an old man’s walking staff.
.
He carefully combs and waxes his beard to stand straight out like a bristle brush. He uses washable (mostly) dye on his hair and beard. Right now they are a subdued blue rather than a more outrageous color because he is trying to blend in with the rest of the crowded city.
.
He’s just learned about the polish that some city women put on their nails. FluffyCuddles doesn’t like the smell, so he won’t be putting it on his nails. But he has been wondering if it would work on teeth.
.
He is wearing a second hand actor’s costume. From a quick glance at a distance it probably looks like an upper middle class guild leader’s business outfit. But up close it is obvious that it is a rather threadbare stage costume. Obviously he would like to dress more expensively than his finances currently allow.
