Evil Eye (Su) The shaman causes doubt to creep into the mind of a foe within 30 feet that he can see. The target takes a –2 penalty on one of the following (shaman's choice): ability checks, AC, attack rolls, saving throws, or skill checks. This hex lasts a number of rounds equal to 3 + the shaman's Wisdom modifier. A successful Will saving throw reduces this to just 1 round. At 8th level, the penalty increases to –4. This is a mind-affecting effect.

Background:

The sage Duran was raised in a temple monastery on the religious island of Istorija. He came to be there under mysterious circumstances, already in possession of shock-white hair and milky eyes despite his young age. Rumor had it that the child had been struck by a falling star, causing his unnatural complexion, and the people of his home had given him up to the temple, believing that the child was either blessed or curse, depending on who was telling the tale.

Ultimately rumors are just that, and the exact details of how Duran ended up being in the company of monks for the duration of his adolescence are unimportant. What does matter is the almost preternatural sense of enlightenment that accompanied the youth. He greedily devoured all lessons that were offered to him by the temple. The teachings of Idora the Abbot, the Seventy-Six Forms of the Compassionate Hand and a half-dozen other martial styles, hardening of the body, sharpening of the mind, and tempering of the spirit - no subject escaped his voracious appetite for self-improvement.

This may be the point at which one expects some manner of tragic twist to the story, some even that would drive Duran from his home into the world at large. If that where the case, then one would be disappointed, for the real reason that Duran left his temple was as a kind of missionary, spreading the teachings and wisdom of the monks to the world at large. Of course in Lannithir most have need for more practical lessons than philosophy and theism. Luckily, Duran was content to oblige either way (and earned quite the reputation as a result).

During an epidemic of Iron Cough in the western state of the Fog he was noted of having stayed up for seven full days and nights to collect herbs and prepare remedies for afflicted refugees. Shortly after he fell in with the outlaw Fen-Yin, aiding her in smuggling escaped slaves from the Fog and into the Evergreen. On another occasion his presence in Lamira found him accidentally in the company of a powerful Archmage. Unexpectedly nothing bad came of it, as the two enjoyed a series of wonderful conversations before Duran eventually moved on. Such fortune did not attend him on his travels through the Northern Tribes where he became mixed up in a terribly bloody dispute between two warring tribes. With no other options it became necessary to intervene physically and root out the two rivals that had be instigating the whole thing, which ultimately led to a melding of the two tribes into one.

The list goes on, and continues to grow as Duran commits to traveling the world. Of course, it is no surprise that he has drawn the attention of certain folk, specifically the good lord of Uostas whose generous invitation has spurred the Wayward Sage to return to his homeland.
