Female Human Vigilante Brawler

Nothing to forgive. It felt pretty cool to beat the save, and I wouldn’t have rules-lawyered about HD. I have no problem if you want to embellish a bit on what the fey can do.

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

So we have 3000, 4000, and 6000g prizes. I gotta add my 3250g share to my profile.

Katrine sighs and nods. "I get it. But you'll need to make an in-depth investigation of how far her cult of Gyronna has spread, and make everyone who participated renounce the Angry Hag in front of Ahto while he has his truth-telling active. Sometimes a witch hunt is necessary. Have you heard of Heibarr before, and how the city fell?"

The Vixen’s isn’t too comfortable with the term ‘witch hunt.’ But then, her father wasn’t seduced by a witch…

“Never heard o’ Heibarr.”

VV speaks few words because she’s ready to listen.

I’m thinking of throwing my hat in the ring with a sprite fire talon monk. That is… if this is meant to be a team tourney where we fight NPCs and we’re the good guys. If this is PvP, never mind!!!

Hotcha Twinkletoes
Hotcha sat on the shoulders of many a martial arts master. She learned that the big people’s worst enemy is gravity. At 5 inches tall, weighing 1 ounce, gravity is a wimp. Maybe with the right training, big people will be wimps too compared to the likes of Hotcha!

I’m debating about giving her energize wings, or Firefly for tiny hadoukens. At Lv.11, could do both. But definitely Fire Talon. The weak damage with fire seems appropriate for a tiny person.

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

Not-quite Badia, not-quite Emi & Naja, and in a not-vermilion qipao is an ass-kicking vixen.

All by the same artist: “Vandrell.”

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

The Vixen plays it cool. She needs to find Dr. Amp. Or better yet, her fairy! Can she feel her in here?

Empathic link to Fashion Bug, if possible. Else, explore as if belonging here!

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

@Emi, PM sent.

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

The Vixen, guised as Buckley, tries the door to the manor…

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

Happy 4th to you too!

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

Plane landed so no GM post until later. Emi, go ahead and cast the fuchsia, I’ll post the Naja avatar later then begin act III when I can do so without neglecting house guests who just traveled 8000 miles.

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

Yes! Erasing GM post since you got it!

So for character creation, I need:

An Archetype – fantasy, sci-fi, or any mythological or super-heroic archetype

A Body Type that fits your chosen archetype:
• Amazon – you have more HP than the others, but lack magic
• Nymph – you can use magic: pick an element, if your Archetype didn’t already give you an elemental magic
• Fairy – you’re a few inches tall, you have wings and magic, and less HP than the others
• Clever Girl – you have average HP and no magic, but there’s something special about you that no stat block can define

A Costume – something thematic and/or magi-technologically functional

A Day Job

…and yes, her name and you may give a brief backstory and post an image that you found or drew.

Example:
Addison Lane is the Vermilion Vixen.

A. She’s a Brick.
B. She’s built like an Amazon, but sensitive about her thighs.
C. She wears a mask, combat stilettos and is wrapped in red fabrics.
D. By day, she’s a Fashionista.

But by night, blah blah blah backstory. Here’s an IMAGE

The “Brick” archetype means she is a non-flying Supergirl, within reason. Throwing apple carts, not feeling punches… that works. Crushing coal into a diamond: nope.

The “Amazon” body type best fits Brick. She gets more HP than the other body types. She’s not magical like the nymph or fairy.

VV’s “Combat Stilettos” make her awesome at kicking and acrobatics. What? In heels? That’s BS! But it’s superhero genre BS and she’s got a super-heroic archetype. So she’ll roll a d20 when she performs acrobatic feats… and a d12 for stealth from those loud clacking heels. Who decided what VV’s good at and bad at? The player. GM approves as long as the abilities are reasonable, if in a cartoony way. P: “Can stiletto boots pick locks?” GM: “No. You’re a brick with ass-kicking boots. Kick the door down.”

VV’s “Fashionista” job doesn’t really add to the above… but it certainly makes the argument to add magi-tech to the rest of her outfit. As GM, I might suggest adding x-ray/spectral vision to the mask. The player says no… but how about a spidey-sense type thing where VV can hone in on someone in danger?

Ultimately, my goal is to give you a quick, cheap way to make a character. If this results in one character rolling d20s for everything, and that feels unfair to someone who botched a lot of d12 rolls, I’ll run my next one-shot differently. The fun in it for me is both the storytelling and the experimentation.

Hopefully, you’ll find the experience fun too. And surprising. Weird, but surprising… in a good way.

Can my character identify as a male?

Yes—as long as you won’t take offense OoC that King Joshua’s obsequious underling lumps you in with the women (a.k.a. the other PCs) at the beginning of the game.

Almonihah wrote:
So is the position of chimera open? :D

The chimera in the title is an NPC, but Monstress archetypes are certainly allowed!

The Premise: you’re a young woman who lives in the Kingdom of Southtopia. It’s six degrees south of Utopia. Latitudinally, I mean. It’s on a different continent. And the continent is a shithole, thanks to all the monsters that keep mysteriously appearing and threatening civilization.

Lucky for you, King Joshua (pronounced YO-shoe-ah) has the answer: The Annual Monster Hunting Competition! Or TAMHuC for short.

This year’s monster is known as FLOTSAM, the only monster whose name is lamer than the acronym for the competition. But King Joshua is a former pirate captain, so a monster named after a shipwreck scares the f#~+ out of him.

Our Heroines stick out like a sore thumb. In part, it’s because monster-hunting is a heavily-male-dominated sport. But it’s also because of my screwy character creation system.

There are four steps to creating a character:

ARCHETYPE
BODY TYPE
COSTUME
DAY JOB

Oh, and she needs a name, bit of backstory, and you gotta find an avatar that kinda looks like who you have in mind. But that’s kinda self-explanatory. I’ll elaborate on those conveniently alphabetized steps later.

To answer a couple questions on Discord:

1.) The game is not entirely diceless, but only players roll. Trying to flatter, BS, con or intimidate …all RP.

I’ve had experiences in which diceless combat led to misunderstandings. The poor GM had no idea what we thought our characters could do!

2.) More details. Right! Will get to character creation and a little background in a separate post…

Thanks!

Delmoth wrote:
By rules lite do you mean something along the lines of Dread?

Ha! Not sure how I’d make a virtual Jenga tower work!

Nothing fancy though. Just an over-simplification of the randomizer.

You’re either good at something or you’re not. If you’re good at whatever you’re up to, you roll a d20. If you’re not, roll a d12. Difficulty is on a scale of 1 to 10.

Who’s interested in a rules-lite one-shot? By rules-lite, I mean it’s not Pathfinder or even pretending to be. By one-shot, I mean the story runs like: beginning, middle, end… and then it ends.

This episode is called “Knights! Chimera! ACTION!!” so you can expect it has knights and a chimera in it, and action will ensue more than once.

The characters I’m looking for…
• are female,
• heroic (any “good” alignment)
• and prefer not to stab people.

The players I’m looking for…
• play well with others,
• post frequently (three times a week or so)
• and prefer not to stab people.

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

As much as she hates to do it, VV uses her power to alter her appearance. She looks similar to the rightful owner of the helmet she’s wearing!

(Enlarge + Alter Self to appear to be a male of Buckley’s race!)

She dons the black coat (that was used to cover the corpse), then heads straight to the mansion, hoping her magical disguise will do the trick!

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

Y’know what? I have three general tips. I’ll go with those.

1) Don’t kill off your PCs.

It’s a demotivating immersion-killer to start a campaign as one character, then finish it as another. There are plenty of survivable stakes that can keep the tension going, such as protecting a lovable NPC, your hero’s own reputation, or the state of the world.

That said, I tend to tell players if they dive into a dragon’s mouth with a live grenade in hand, that’s a death. I found players don’t get stupid when you agree upfront they’re not immortal, just protected by a decent suit of plot armor.

2) Make sure your players play nicely.

Nothing sucks the fun out of a campaign more than players who can’t get along. ‘My character is a duck’ is not an excuse for in-game dickery. Also, in PbP, italicized thoughts are a great tool for one player to bully another. What a jerk! She’s lucky I didn’t slap her in public. That would show everyone what a jerk she is! The other player can’t defend herself from this verbal abuse because that would be mind-reading.

As GM, if players can’t play nice, you gotta shut that down.

3) Fairies can fly.

Specifically, that means I’m annoyed that Pathfinder 2 has playable sprites, and their wings are useless until Lv.17.

But a more general way to put this is simply that fantasy creatures and archetypes come with certain expectations, and if a rules system is getting in the way, then a GM house-rule might be the solution.

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

Hmm…

I guess I’m not the best to give it, since my episode in this is my most recent experience, and I ended up making Jessica want to leave (I think when I shot up her character—maybe she didn’t know the RUD-209 was firing nonlethal jingle bells?).

I’ll give it a shot though.

Some questions:
• Is this in-person or PbP?
• Homebrew or existing system?
• His own story or an existing one (like a pathfinder AP)?

Well I say keep both ideas written down and focus on one for now. I know I always forget other ideas if I don't write them down! Are you thinking just a normal dice system or something with d20s and such?

Sound advice.

I’m working on a system inspired by the three Fates. But if that one doesn’t work, my fallback will be something that uses d6’s. I want it to be simple, yet recognize characters’ strengths and weaknesses.

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

Aw… poor guy. How could Dr. Amp murder someone so gentle, so nonthreatening?

The Vixen has a crazy idea. One that will get her close to Amp. Maybe.

She takes the jacket, drapes it over her back, and contemplates the distance to the mansion.

Alter Self could help her guise as a Zombie Minkins! She can’t assume an exact form, but rough body shape and Sleeves of Many Garments to alter the outfit, along with some articles of the real outfit. Duration is 6 minutes though. I have a spell to speed VV up, if it helps.

She also examines the now-uncovered body. Maybe Minkins found a key? A way to turn off the dampener? Fashion Bug?

I don't want to sound like I'm just saying things, but that sounds truly inspired!

I know I would have loved a "easy" tabletop RPG when I was younger, just so I could share my creations with people, and a fairy vs. robots theme just sounds perfect!

I really appreciate this!

I had another idea in the works (with awesome cover art) that was less kid-friendly, and I was kinda stuck going back and forth between the ideas. But after reading this, I came up with a super simple system. It does just enough to differentiate characters, and you could be a fairy, knight, princess, mech pilot, super hero(ine), etc.

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

The Vixen moves closer. Her flesh hardens.

Barkskin: AC is increased from 19 to 22 for the next hour.

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

I’m thinking of a world once overtaken by machines, so you’re rebuilding with the aid of fairies, leprechauns, mermaids, etc. and battles are typically against machines, so you’re not forced to kill or cause pain (but can still have destructive battles).

OKAY!!! This is th last time I'm apologizing for not posting!!! I apologize for not posting more than I post! So don't let me do it anymore!!!

Well, I’m interested in keeping this story going to the end, if that works as encouragement.

On a side note, many of my Paizo games are moving in slow-mo now. I’ve been filling the void trying to create an RPG world/system, and a very kid-friendly idea sprang into my head at breakfast this morning. It stemmed from a conversation with my younger daughters. It somehow led to the imagery of a leprechaun escaping in a tiny elevator that is built into his rainbow—and that’s the premise: an entire world being rebuilt by a child’s imagination!

It will be even rules-lighter than [insert popular rules-light system here], and is somewhat inspired by the Dwane “the Rock” Johnson Jumanji movies which assign a short list of strengths and weaknesses to each player.

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

The Vixen edges ever closer. She communicates through her Message power (cantrip).

Madame Zulu, please protect Martha if whatever this is gets the better o’ me. Whatever ye might think of her treachery and infidelity, her unborn child’s the only one among us who’s truly innocent.

And if I came off as disrespectful to ye, know that I’m sorry for that. Let’s survive this thing so ye can tell Martha’s kid stories about Grandpa Rainsford.

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

The Vixen wonders if that’s her lion… zombified?

She draws closer, stealthily if she can.

Stealth: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

Good to know things are looking up. Happy Easter!

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

Had guests over this weekend, so I was busier than I thought. Posted!

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

VV says, “Then me plan’s all we got.”

She hesitates a moment… eyes falling to Martha’s belly, which’ll beautifully inflate with life as long as…

“Martha, I just want ye to know, in case all goes south, we’re still friends. If ye need a place to stay, I’ll help ye. Whatever secrets Dr. Amp got out o’ ye don’t matter. Ye’ve a life in ye—the only fully innocent life among us all.

“I protect the innocent.”

The Vixen sets off to put those words into action…!

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

Glad you’re feeling better. The fast-forward works. I’ll try posting tonight or tomorrow.

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

The Vixen says, “Then I guess we move to the cove and just check her boat before we go in the house, unless one o’ ye’s a better plan.”

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

“And?”

If that question needs some explanation, VV says, “Unless Dr. Amp set deadly traps on her own boat, or none of us have a means to steal a boat, who owns what don’t concern me.

“Also, me clothing and me fairy friend may be on that boat. So if it’s docked nearby, we best head right to it.”

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

@Mort, please boot the Vermilion Vixen from the game. Apparently today was my first time accidentally posting as her (my default avatar) in this game.

~Hanako’s player

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

The Vixen replies, “Best plan I got’s to head right to Dr. Amp. Unless there’s a place we can check out first, I say we boat o’er to her on the water.”

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

My 8th-Graders wanted my help with their ELA reading assignment today. It was the short story that inspired this episode as well as the character “Grandpa Rainsford.” I had never read it before, so I was really into it. (Both for the many similarities to my in-game experience and that it’s a damn good story!)

Funny... my thought all this time was to use the water to tracklessly return to the mansion. I was pleasantly surprised to be following what Grandpa Rainsford would have advised!

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

I thought I’d add a helmet to my avatar, since the helmet seems to be necessary at the moment!

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

She also thinks to ask Zulu, “Ye know any healing magic? ’Cause if ye do, I don’t s’pose ye’d mind donning the help and patching me up.”

(I think Zulu’s a druid, so hopefully I can get a few CLWs and, if she’s Lv.5, some CMWs too!)

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

Oh! My magic—yay!

VV punches her fist against the ground, leaving a brilliant vermilion double-V on the ground. She then lifts her unconscious foe, assuming he weighs little more than a ton. (Max heavyload = 2100 lbs.)

“Oh, it feels good to be meself again! I mean, this helmet ain’t me style, but function o’er fashion’ll do for now.”

She lowers the giant. Dragging him won’t wear her down, but she can only lift a one-ton man for so long. (Dragging 2000 pounds would effectively be 1/5 the load, which is light with her Ant Haul strength.)

With or without the big guy, VV intends to rescue her fairy and stop the mad doctor Amp. “Where to, Shivers?”

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

Cool! Looking forward to it!

Quen Pah wrote:

Okay, so let me give you a rationale for my choices. First, I really hate having to make choices of who gets to play in a game that people often spend lots of time in preparing characters for. I think that people deserve consideration for that work and time that they spent doing this.

Also, I have seen games begin to fall apart if you choose x number of players and then one or two drop out. That leaves the others in a bind not because they do not want to play but because others made that choice for them, I do not think that is fair.

So, I may regret this, and I am going to ask for your patience in this, but I am going to pick all of you to play. That way I hope we can get past the first few encounters of the first module.

The Force is strong with this one.

(I know this is a closed recruitment, but just wanted to say that this is awesome. I agree with the rationale on multiple levels.)

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

The Vixen seems puzzled by the lack of evidence, aside from Shivers’ word that the big guy really is, normally, a gentle giant.

“Maybe Amp lies and said it’s ya who did in Uncle Henry. Well, with me powers dampened, I can’t move him.”

It then dawns on the Vixen.

“Does the helm help me resist the power dampener?” She picks it up, but asks Shivers to try on the helm first. She doesn’t explain that she wants to make sure donning the helm doesn’t put him in Amp’s control.

If it proves harmless (after much stalling: “Ye feel anything? Nothing? Ye sure? Oh, right. Ye don’t have super powers, do ye? Heh. Me bad. Lemme give it a go then…”), the Vixen then tries the helmet on. The first thing she does is try reaching her fairy via their magical bond. And then there’s her uncanny ability to lift a giant. If the helm does nothing for her superpowers, she takes it off.

@Allegra, high numbers favor the player. (I know because I missed once the first round.)

Female Human Vigilante Brawler

Tired is more RP than anything. I lost half my HP and missed a lot, so I imagined VV was struggling a bit.

The Vixen pats the big guy on the head. “Sleep it off,” she says gently. She doesn’t bother tying him up. He’d break loose if she used chains. A rope might as well be a string.

She instead picks up the helmet that rolled off. “Any chance he was being controlled? I mean, I’m not gonna kill him regardless, but there’s a gentleness about him. I think.

“Not lost on me that I took a few blows to the head.”

I think you goofed on damage. D8’s before, D20’s now... but then the only damage that was worse than a d8 was a natural 20 attack, so the damage numbers actually work.

29/60 HP

The Vixen can’t really take much more of a beating, but then, is that really a shock.

“Time to sleep, ye big lug.”

Kick: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
Conf: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11 Hah!
Damage B. Magic: 1d8 + 17 ⇒ (7) + 17 = 24

Kick: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16 Nope!

Trip: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 5 + 2 = 25 Yup!

Kick: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
Damage B. Magic: 1d8 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19

Stomp: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13 Nope!

The Vixen’s tired attack flails a bit. She watches the big guy, wondering if he’s going to get up and clobber her some more...!

Nissa will grab onto Big Red if Zellgato can get to her, or she to him.

Guns are not drawn, so no plan for any other action this round.
