Usumba Kende was born in the city of Kibwe, in the eastern Mwangi jungle, to a pair of wealthy and prestigious merchants. Together, his mother and father controlled much of the trade around the region. Usumba and his siblings were taught to have a keen business sense from an early age, and inherited the family business when their parents grew old. They also were taught the faith of Abadar, the patron of merchants, and Usumba learned to cast many minor blessings from the god's power. While his twin sister, Siya, handled larger administrative work, Usumba preferred to work in the field, venturing out to far lands to establish new routes and ties. While journeying with caravans, he picked up skills as a warrior to better protect his employees and goods. To him, however, his most important skill is negotiation, as he has honed his ability to work out a mutually beneficial deal for many years, and in many cities. His latest venture was to the city of Oparra, where he recently made contact with Martella Lotheed, who invited him to the Exaltation Gala. Usumba is glad for the opportunity to meet with the elites of the nation, even if it is a celebration rather than a formal business meeting. He believes the repeal of primogeniture is for the benefit of Taldor, as he recognizes that the suppression of non-males inhibits the economic potential and development of the nation.

Usumba Kende is a tall Mwangi human whose clothing serves to showcase his wealth and power. He dresses in resplendent robes of blue and gold, and prominently displays the key of Abadar. Outside of settings in which he feels his appearance is important, he prefers to wear simpler, less extravagant clothing, or his armor in potentially dangerous circumstances.
Usumba is generally reserved and focused on his goals. He regards all social interaction with people outside his family or close friends as a diplomatic engagement, remaining even tempered and businesslike. He believes strongly in the rule of law and in fairness, and does not exploit employees or business associates.
