Background:
Ungrim's father was a fortification engineer in a small mining community. When the community was wiped out by a band of kobolds, Ungrim's father was killed, and his mother took refuge in a local dwarven monastery. As the youngest of four children, there was little chance of a family inheritance, and Ungrim himself was more-or-less given to the monks to raise and train, doing the usual round of fetching water, washing floors, and martial exercises for hours on end. He showed unusual flair specifically for the bow.
As a novice, ordinarily he would be trained for another several years at least, but when news of the threat to Cleftwood Village reached the House of the Contemplative Rock, he begged the senior monks to be permitted to help protect others who would otherwise be left parentless.
