Yea I have seen games where all 6 players had leadership. No rule I see about only 1 player being able to have it.

So even if a cohort helps in a battle they gain nothing of the exp from the kill?

Ok I know the rules for cohorts. It's my understanding that encounters Are built with a set amount of exp. Let's say for example a dragon is worth 400 exp. 4 players kill the dragon they each get 100 exp. Right?
Add 4 cohorts to the battle, the dragon dies quicker no co-hort dies
each would gain Exp based off of their level vs their masters level X the orginal 400 pts
my question is where does this exp comes from? Shouldn't they be due a share of the 400 exp pie?? Advice?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Need some input from anyone on cohorts adventuring along with the party.
I've never been a fan of a party member suddenly getting to add a 2nd character besides their main. This throws off my enoucters builds. Also i'm worried about everyone adding 2nd characters and claims to party loot. Why would someone join up and risk there life and not get an = share?

I've always ran with the cohorts hanging back "guarding the camp" while the main characters go into the tunnels and adventure. I Know "the gm makes the rules" but i told the player i would see what the boards said as far as some advice before ruling that way.
Could anyone offer any advice how they do it in your games?

Oooooo ok I get it now wasn't see the word penalty in

Constitution: Damage to your Constitution score causes you to take penalties on your Fortitude saving throws. In addition, multiply your total Hit Dice by this penalty and subtract that amount from your current and total hit points. Lost hit points are restored when the damage to your Constitution is healed. A character with a Constitution score of 0 is dead.

Ok thanks all!!!!!

Hi guys, I'm about to use wraiths on my party. These have a d6 con drain attack
from my understanding of con damage won't the afflicted person be dead long before 0 con? Maybe I'm reading the rule wrong. Please let me know if my math is off. example 10 level fighter 90 hp (con =16) fails fort save and the roll is a 6 doing 6x10 HD, and the fighter losses 60 hp. Next hit 2nd wraith (crappy roll again example) fails save this time looses 4 con 4x 10 = 40 hp loss dieing fighter on ground 2 hits.
Am understanding this rule?

Shouldn't wraiths be a much higher cr than 5?

Thanks all for the help
the hg's were cr 7
It was a 2 hour fight. The party's wizard was able to make the difference by softening the hg's up with everyones fav fireball.

Apl 9 group 4 people

1st fight cloud giant cr 11

2nd fight 12 hill giants with a frost giant
12 cr 8 and a cr 9.
I can't figure the exp on this. The calculator I downloaded has it all messed up
if you dont mind could some one break down the math for me.

This post isn't so much his build as my thinking that its op for my game.
He made the toon according to the rules, I allowed the longbow of speed.
This is one of the reasons I put it in the advice section of the threads. Theres seems to be a jump in the Mob's to hit bonus and Hp that has left my group in the dust. To date they have an oracle (for heals, Thief, Wizard Fighter archer build). My main concern is offering the group a challenge without having to throw the kitchen sink at them, or design every encounter to defeat the main dps. such as disarm's on the bow all the time or sunders etc etc.

Thanks for the advice I see that the items in the game are to high for their level.

Also seeing that the archer build isnt as bad for the game once its under control.
thanks for the advice guys its been a help also learned something.

"Oh, and even with combat reflexes, he can't take more than one attack of opportunity for the same move. So each giant is eating max one AoO before closing and wringing his neck. I would not attack him either, I would grapple."

I like this what page number please and thanks for your post. I did allow a little to high on the magic item.

Lvl 9 fighter Bab is 9/4
dex 20 +5
Weapon spec Long bow + 2
Weapon train +2
+3 Longbow of Speed +3
weapon focus +1

+22/+22/17 to hit with many shot. 4 arrows

Damage is 7 each arrow with an avg damage of 42 each round
Hes mad because I wont let improved snapshot in the game that allows him a 15' spread of Threat range combined with combat reflexes. As mobs with a 5' range come into their 5' range he is eating them up in AOO then finishing them off. They are fighting hill giants and hes taking a hill giant out every other round.

I know I can monkey with the encounter but seems a little hackey if I have to design every encounter around his crazy DPS. His old character got killed and this is a new character with out much magic items save the bow.

Am I being a little crazy here or is Improved snapshot a little OP?

Last question does Many shot and Rapid shot combine?

vital strike
Benefit: When you use the attack action, you can make one attack at your highest base attack bonus that deals additional damage. Roll the damage dice for the attack twice and add the results together, but do not multiply damage bonuses from Strength, weapon abilities (such as flaming), or precision-based damage (such as sneak attack). This bonus damage is not multiplied on a critical hit (although other damage bonuses are multiplied normally).

Is this useable for a move action/single attack or full rd attk
will it stack with Many shot

many shot
Benefit: When making a full-attack action with a bow, your first attack fires two arrows. If the attack hits, both arrows hit. Apply precision-based damage (such as sneak attack) and critical hit damage only once for this attack. Damage bonuses from using a composite bow with a high Strength bonus apply to each arrow, as do other damage bonuses, such as a ranger's favored enemy bonus. Damage reduction and resistances apply separately to each arrow.

IMO I would have to know more facts. Stated as is you got boned.
However was the ranger min/maxed on stealth? Did the giants need to roll a nat 20 to even make the dc check? Were the giants hadicapped in any form that would cause them to be sleeping hard? All of these factors go into accounting how much of a challenge these giants were in defeating. As the book says

Pure roleplaying encounters generally have a CR equal to the average level of the party (although particularly easy or difficult roleplaying encounters might be one higher or lower).

If the ranger was the only one on the inside and the others were ready to jump in then the ranger should get a larger reward than the rest of the party. If you guys split up the exp award then exp should be shared out at a lower amount. But I wasn't there.
