I think dungeon exploration is hard in PBP because everyone's ready to stand in front of a door, waiting for the following:
-group consensus
-a less squishy member to barge through
-someone with a higher skill bonus to do their skilly thing
Without those criteria being met, stalls tend to happen. I might have to keep that in mind next time I design a PBP character for a game; I tend to go divine because the chances of recruitment are better, but the kick-down-door barbarian or ranger type could really lead to the smoothest player experience.
I really like what you've set up for us so far, our little group of plucky adventurers and the Abyss setting. I'd be sad to lose that, but I wouldn't want you to feel bogged down, either.
Maybe if we do continue, we could set up an autoplay-type rule where we will automatically proceed down a path (or similar) after a day if we haven't discussed otherwise? That might help us along.
Trini sighs. "I guess it's scrubbing time. Let's get to work." She pushes up her sleeves. "I thought I had left this behind," she mutters. "There's glory in adventuring, they said. Non-stop danger and wonder, they said..."
"If you don't want to, maybe we can just tie a weight to the rope. If we stand on all sides and send more light down to the bottom, we can see if there's a tunnel there."
I started running my own PBPs partway through this one, and I can definitely sympathize!
I've been really enjoying this game thanks to the DMing, interesting setting, and great character interactions with everyone! It would be a bummer to lose Daniel; I really like Varric from Dragon Age so was pretty interested to see that adapted to Pathfinder. Maybe you could swap out characters?
"It's a complicated hideaway! The other adventurers must like getting wet. Hopefully, there's some sign of where they are." Trini starts looking around.
Trini hopes their soak has not caused leaves to sprout from her or anything. She asks for Gozreh's guidance before having a look for any passages herself.
"Why not both? Let's look for the others from Terrace. If the townspeople get impatient and come after us, they've done what we want anyway. If not, we can still lure them in afterwards. Done!"
"We've got a smart crew here. I'm sure we can handle that riddle. I think luring the townsfolk in is a good idea. Does anyone want to do that? I have little experience in subterfuge or stealth."
"The townsfolk are probably the more pressing need, though I am intrigued by this tunnel. Perhaps if we stay in long enough (maybe investigating the tunnel), we will draw them in, we could run out, and then we could use their explosives against them?"
"I'll follow the group's lead, though if we go through the submerged tunnel, we should rope ourselves together."
Trini, who has been avoiding watching the process, looks over as Emerich stops. She runs her fingers over what once was skin with mounting dread.
"Looks like it goes deeper than we thought," she says dazedly. She blinks hard. "I don't know how much time I have, but I think we have to destroy that tree."
Trini looks worried. "Surely it takes more than one day of that..." She scratches, hard, at one of the patches in irritation. "My poor parents, when I left, they had a daughter, and now they'll be getting back a giant pine cone! I'll never complain about my skin again!"
Her voice takes on a serious tone. "Please watch out for me, all of you. If it does happen, you may need to take me out."
"Maybe we shouldn't try and carve it off... wait, wooden forms?! Are the townsfolk not flesh and blood?! I agree with Arnek that you seem to be telling us more than they were."
She thinks of another question. "Have you heard of a glowing blue boy that haunts dreams?"
Hey, one of us had to try it, or what would be the fun in that? :P
Trini can't help but let out a startled yelp as she discovers her condition.
"I'm turning into a tree!" she announces in a panic as she turns back to the group, yanking up her sleeve to show them. She wrings her hands and moans piteously. "Arnek, can you tell if it's magic?"
Trini stands up. "If only I was able to detect magic today! I don't think we'll find what we're looking for in there, though I'm still curious. Should we check out the other passage, or does someone want to investigate this area more first?"
"I don't know if we should separate," Trini says nervously. She gets on the ground to better peer down into the pool. "Maybe we should have given him a rope..."
Aha, investing in Sense Motive this level has paid off!
Trini waves it off. "You scoundrel, Daniel! The water's fine. Now.." She rolls up her sleeves. "Who's good at swimming, or holding their breath? I'm not, but I can provide a little divine assistance." She wiggles her fingers at the others.
We've made it!! Exciting :) still gotta get through this darn cave, of course!
So I think we should probably sell the bracers of armor when we get back to Terrace for loot money, since they're only of mild use for us.
HP:1d8 ⇒ 3 <- looked up the rules in the Recruitment thread and I can take average instead, right?
Skills
Trini can't tell what's up or down in this crazy new world, so she will make good use of that wisdom and focus on Perception and Sense Motive. Since our healing is currently limited, and we do a bit of investigating (CSI: Abyss), the last point went into Heal. I definitely want a heal kit next time we get some cash. I noticed that I'd gotten my trait bonus wrong, so another +1 to my Appraise, as well.
We may want to discuss the skills we take for the best synergy, but I thought those would be a good niche within the party.
Class Features Fervor time! Touch healing to me or a pal, or a swift action spell on myself.
Spells
One more cantrip and level 1 spell. If anyone has any advice for good warpriest spells (I don't know many outside Core), I'm listening.
Other Stats BAB goes to 1, Fort and Will go to base 3.
Before I change my sheet, is this something we are putting into effect right now or tomorrow?
Trini beckons the others forward, gesturing towards the right path.
"This path has been tread lately," she whispers, not wanting to get them detected; her voice does tend to carry. "Should we take it? Did the book say anything about it?"
