Mistrust...

A Shoanti woman returned wounded to her clan, in her arms a dark skined child of two years with crimson hair, when asked about the identity of the boy she answered by saying that the caravan that both her and the child's mother were traveling was the victim of a raid, and she had promised the dying mother to care for her son. There was some resistance to her decision, as some of the clan members suspected that the boy was of Chelxian origin due to his facial features, but she swore to them that his mother was a woman of the north, the elders took her word and allowed her to raise the child among them, she also decided to keep the Ulfen name his mother had given him: Vires.

The boy grew into a strong young man and a capable warrior who fought and hunted with the clan that took him in, and while some of were unfriendly towards him, they were still respectful of his abilities, he also had a growing friendship with a Varisian trader who came to trade with the clan on occasion, and would at times guard his wagon until they reached the next city the merchant was traveling to. On one of these trips, a Shoanti man who claimed to be on the same caravan that had been attacked all these years ago returned to the village, while the reaction to his return was a happy one, as he was expected to be among the dead, the emotional environment of the village morphed to a more somber mood when he made an off-hand comment about a Chelixian and his Ulfen wife, the elder's questioned Vireses foster mother once more, and she said that she never met the boy's father and had no way of knowing if what the other survivor stated the truth or not.

Upon Vires return to the village, he was met with many distrusting faces, and a few minor incidents of outright hostility. The elders confronted him with the details of the situation and of his supposed Chelxian family name: Sangre. Vires was astounded by this knowledge, but he was truly shocked when the elders told him that they agreed to let him stay with the clan if he could prove himself loyal.

Everyone expected the young man to be thankful for this chance and some of the Shoanti even thought that he was undeserving of such grace, but what happened was the complete opposite; Vires snapped at the elders in anger, he reminded of them of the many battles he fought in defense of the clan, of the many hunts he took part in, that if after all that he has not proven himself loyal, than no matter what trial he undertook his loyalty would never be proven, and with that he walked away.

His foster mother being the strong women she always was did not show any weakness during this argument, and only shed tears the moment the boy she raised came to bid her farewell, she wanted to tell him to listen to the elders orders and do as he was told, but she knew of his stubborn nature and that he had the right of the matter as well. She hugged him and turned away, knowing that she would never see the boy she raised into a fine man and warrior ever again.

Treachery...

Vires quickly found himself in the company of mercenaries and sellswords, as was expected of a man of his particular skills. Soon enough he found working exclusively with a mercenary group that went by the name of the Golden Salamanders, he enjoyed his time with them; as they did not care who he was or who his parents were, as long as he could fight he was welcome among them.

The Golden Salamanders leader, a man that went by the name of Jovell was able to build a mentor student relationship with the red haired warrior, and hammered into him the philosophy that fighting with honor should be the last thing on his mind, that survival was all that mattered in the end. Vires in return learned with time to trust his new friend and leader, but it was not to last.

During a battle that the Golden Salamanders were paid to participate in, Jovell split their company into two units, one was intended to be sacrificed so that the army they were fighting for would gain the upper hand. It was a sound strategy considering their situation albeit a very cold and callous one. There was one thing that Jovell did not count on though, Vires coincidentally overhearing this plan. Rage filled Vires, once more he was betrayed by someone he cared about, he wanted to enter the tent and rip Jovell limb from limb with his own two hands, but he held himself back with willpower he did not know he possessed and waited for a more opportune moment. As the battle began, the Crimson haired warrior cut his way through the enemies before the main force of their foe arrived and made it to Jovell's location, it was there that he impaled the mercenary leader with his two handed sword and fled. Carrying wounds, both physical and emotional.

Betrayal...

Some how Vires was able to make it to a nearby village where he was able to nurse his wounds and recover, but the scars of betrayal were still fresh, and vengeance did little to heal them, but he took solace in knowing that his former leader could never make use of him again, with that thought in mind he pushed whatever emotional burden he felt aside and decided to focus on finding any kind of work to survive.

While he never found any work in the village, he did uncover information about his father's family from one of the shopkeepers; the old merchant told him that his family were famous traders, and that he heard that the previous head of the family had died years ago in a caravan raid. Deducing that the head of the family the old shopkeeper spoke of was his father, the Vires decided to seek his fortune in Korvosa.

It took him a weeks to arrive, but he finally made it to the town his father resided in, as he made inquiries around the town, he was finally lead to a beautiful middle-aged woman who claimed to be his cousin, he was hesitant to believe her at first; as he was betrayed by people who claimed to care about him before, but with time he was able to not only trust but care about her as well. Finding family who'd love and care about him unconditionally was more than he'd hoped for, so he was ready to do anything his cousin asked of him, so when she pleaded that he attend an expedition she was financing to insure that the adventurers she hired would act according to the signed contract, he was more than happy to oblige.

The expedition was to an old ruin that was a few days walk away from the city and even less on horseback. Entering the ruin was little trouble as the wizard that was traveling with them easily found the solution to the arcane blocked door. Once inside things started going from bad to worse; they started losing adventures left and right, some to traps and others to monsters within in the ruins, finally the only ones alive were Vires and the wizard. They reached a wide chamber with various engraved pillars and a pedestal with a floating sphere radiating with arcane energy, it was then that the wizard turned on him and began attacking him, but Vires was ready for such treachery.

The battle ended with Vires standing over the body of the wizard, but what he did not take into account was the arcane sphere that he knocked aside during the battle, he looked to see it was cracked and pulsing with a strange light, feeling that nothing good could come of this, Vires ran and as result was only caught by a small amount of the arcane blast. Strapping himself to his horse, wounded and feeling a strange sensation after being caught in that blast, Vires rode to Korvosa, his consciousness failing just as he arrived at the gates.

Vires awakened to find himself in a bed in his cousin's home, she was looking over him with a smile on her face, as he tried to get up he noticed something around his neck, a metal choker of some kind, as he was about to ask what has happened to him, he felt a shock of pain run through his body, he could not focus on anything around him, but could make out the words of "wizard...should have killed you...this works...puppet". A rage welled up within the wounded warrior, a familiar rage that he felt before, he remembered never fully giving into it, but now it demanded full release, and he willingly smashed the cage that stood in its way. Lunging at his cousin and clasping his hands in a steel grip around her neck, he felt the pain once more but ignored it and kept squeezing.

Falling to the floor only after the corpse of his cousin fell, Vires made to grab anything to support him, but his hand only found a book that fell on top of him. His eyes opened to the sight of his cousin's hand writing within the book that descended on his head...It seemed to detail a number of activities she's been up to and even a number of people on her payroll. After reading through it twice, he closed it and felt the same anger burn within him once more; he grabbed what he could find of his gear and weapons, any gold in her home and set the house ablaze.

The Beginning...

Tired of betrayals and manipulations, Vires decided to head north to the lands his real mother hailed from, but his reason was not sentimental in anyway; he wanted the heads of these mistress' his cousin's journal spoke of, who while were not involved in what has been done to him, were responsible for her motivations and that to him was enough to seek their end. The other reason was he heard that the Varisian merchant who spied on him for her has changed his trade route to Heldren and he as well deserved the vengeance that he planned to bring upon him.

The Diary of Lissandra Sangre:

Lissandra's diary details how she expected to be the sole heir of her single, ladies man of an uncle's fortune since she was his only living relative, but her dreams were shattered once she learned that he had married a woman from the north during his trading activities there, a letter later that year informed her that he was now a proud father of a healthy boy.

Not willing to stand aside and see her supposedly rightful fortune slip away from her hands, she made a few payments that ended up causing a raid to attack the caravan her uncle was taking. The news soon reached Korvosa and she was named heiress of all her uncle owned. It was only through the ramblings of a Vairisian merchant that she learned that a supposdly Chelxian boy was living among a Shoanti clan, she needed to be sure that the boy learned nothing of his origin or family name, lest he tries to acquire her fortune.

She paid of the Varisian merchant to make trips to the Shoanti clan, and bring her news on her uncle's child, resolving that attempting to kill him while he was in the care of the Shoanti was not a sure thing, she settled on simply keeping an eye on him and was content to let the boy live if he stayed among the Shoanti. News of his exile changed all of those feelings.

Because she lost track of him for the next few years, she found herself increasingly worried and paranoid, she finally caught news of him when the group of mercenaries he was traveling with settled into Korvosa for a few days. Getting an audience with the leader of these mercenaries was of no trouble but convincing him that her cousin needed to die was a whole other matter, it seemed that he was a valuable soldier to the mercenary company, so it took a lot more gold pieces than she'd like, to gain his corporation in a plot to have Vires killed.

Once more she found no news of the young man after the supposed plot, but she could not bring herself to assume that he was dead, and she was right in that assumption as here he was in Korvosa asking about his family. She met him with open arms and while at first he did not seem to be very receptive to her, he soon began treating her like family, but she could not simply leave him alive to someday claim what was hers. The plot of the expedition was easy to conjure up but again its financing would take more than she'd like, she paid extra to the wizard to insure that her cousin would not return alive.

Vires surprised her with her tenacity and will to live, she resolved that maybe he was worth more alive as a figure head, so when her grand plan is set in motion he will be the one to blame.

Her diary also mentioned at various points her mistress' in the north who while not accepting her into their ranks still recognized her power as an up and coming sorceress and have sent her various magical items as a way of recognizing that power.

Big man carrying a long three handed sword on his back, walks up and meets the party. He is around 6' and by the look of him 230 lbs, his hair is kept in tight dread locks tied together at the back of his head. Under his cloak there is a rustling as a small gold and silver hedgehog pops its head out takes a look around running from one side of the big mans massive shoulders to the other and then moves back into the cloak.

Personality:

Vires is tenacious, suspicious of others and stubborn. While he does appear calm if a bit dour most of the time, his anger is volcanic and hard to stop once ignited, he has no problem working with others whether it be towards earning pay or aligned goals, but he will not trust them so readily. Manners are not his strong suit and whatever sense of honor he once had was dissolved thanks to his time with the Golden Salamanders, he won't reveal what he's after immediately but would act without delay if he felt he would gain a profit or make advances towards his current goals.

Spiny Defense (Ex)
As a move action, a hedgehog can roll itself up into a spiny ball. While rolled up, it gains a +1 enhancement bonus to its existing natural armor, and any creature attempting to grapple the hedgehog takes 1d3 damage on making a grapple check. While rolled up, a hedgehog cannot take any action other than leaving this state. The hedgehog can leave this state as a move action.
