Thierry, the son of a man-at-arms in service to the Vexille family of France, was raised on their colonial estate in Verdon. He spent most of his formative years among the kennels, learning about the prized hunting falcons his liege lord kept there. The rest of his time was consumed by scouting out in the forest surrounding the estate. For eighteen years, he trained under the tutelage of his father, Alaric the huntmaster and through his constant explorations. His life was boring yet still idyllic. Until that day. The day the peasants attacked.
They taught him new lessons. That he really wasn't at all stealthy. That knights on horse are only effective if they don't shoot the horse out from under the knight. That no matter how good your armour is swarming an opponent will still work to bring him down. They utterly destroyed the main house and outbuildings in their rampage.
Thierry found himself lying on his back, dazed from a blow to the head. Straddling his chest was a filth crusted man in a tattered clothes with a short spear raised in a stabbing strike. He was meeting his end when a brown blur knocked the rebel off of him. Thierry rose to see that one of the gyrfalcons was savaging the eyes of his attacker with it's talons.
Seeing the ruin that was being wrought, the boy gathered up the bird and quietly slunk off into the trees, walking for days before coming to the settlement of Vinon-sur-Verdon. They were exhausted, torn and bloody, but alive. Several days later they had recuperated and headed south to the port of Marseille, securing a berth on a sailing ship.
Weeks later, they arrived at the port of New Orleans in the Americas. Working odd jobs in and around the city, they learned of the shipping up and down the mighty Mississippi River. Finding work with various barges heading up north, they slowly made their way to St. Louis in the state of Missouri. Learning of expeditions heading west, the man and his loyal companion found one nearing departure and signed on to help guard the settlers and their wagon train.
