Notes: Thian Tul's memories of the past weaken as they flow through his mind. He recalls his sojourn as a new adult from his frozen homeland in the Crown of the World to the raw lands of the southern barbarians. His excitement at the drama of Choral as he took the lands of Issia and Rostland and made them his own. His long engagement on and off through the centuries with House Rogarvia, never a member but always to aid, admire, and sometimes to admonish.
His fondest memories are those of his recent role as Royal Tutor to the heirs of the house. And finally the heartbreaking void left by the Vanishing with all he loved lost without any answer or hope. Closing and walling off those memories he forgets the unbearable pain, finally, leaving only a vague sadness that turns his soul to stone, his mind to stillness.
Thian rises from his meditation, removes the black clothes of mourning, then completes the dawn rituals of Abadar as a newly ordained priest. A moments thought at what his new role in the church would be is interrupted by a knock at the door. As the opens it the messenger tells him that the Archbanker requires his presence in his office. Thian wonders why the Archbanker would be interested in him. He is waved into the office by the office's aide. Thian greets the Archbanker with a bow saying, "Your Eminence, may our lord bless further your prosperity. How can I serve Abadar our Wealthy Father, today?" The Archbanker replies, in his usual quiet monotone, "A troublesome opportunity has come to my attention. Even with your isolation from the world this past decade, you know Brevoy is troubled, lately even more so. Trade is in decline, and the whispers of internal strife grow alarmingly. The Swordlords and their sometime ally the Lord-Mayor has hatched a daring or more likely foolhardy plan. An expedition to the Stolen Lands and exploit the old claims to it using the excuse of the latest bandit chief to justify it. We manage to persuade the instigator to provide an invitation, though no promise of more was made. You will attend and offer sincere aid to this cause. You still retain some memory of the arts of mapmaking, I promised that the one I sent could be useful?"
The elf, older and yet in heart and mind now younger, thinks and replies, "Of course, I retain only the basics, it is as if I was newly trained. Yet I can recover lost arts in a small time, if required." The quite human Archbanker says, "That's good though, what an elf calls a small time is half a human life. Still if you are chosen I fear we may be sending you to a violent death. On the other hand the chance that a howling wilderness may be tamed, turned into productive land, and made a place for civilized people is one that we cannot, in devotion, be ignored." He sighs and continues, "Currently we can provide you with little, but a few useful items are ready for you to take with. May Abadar guard you in your travels, if that be the path laid out."
Thian prepares for a presentation to a formidable lady and departs to the manor.
