About Thaster the Golden

Long years ago, goblins waylaid a caravan moving into Sandpoint and killed most of a merchant family, carrying off the youngest for the stewpot. This tiny orphan was rescued by the militia of Sandpoint and adopted by good-hearted Koya, who named him Thaster after her own grandfather since his real name was lost.

In his childhood, Thaster traveled all over Varisia with Koya and her mother Niska. Though he had a hundred menial duties as part of the caravan, he always managed to sneak away to eavesdrop when a customer visited Niska’ fortunetelling wagon. His ancient adopted granny’s mystic visions awed and fascinated him, and when she predicted that he, too, would be a fortuneteller, he took it to heart.

Koya, seeing in Thaster none of the discretion, humility or good judgement that a servant of Desna needs, gently tried to dissuade him from his goal. But Thaster was stubborn, and far too clever for his own good; his quick facility with languages impressed a traveling Galdurian merchant, who suggested he might do well at the Twilight Academy, where even an poor orphan might win a scholarship if he impressed the teachers with his potential.. Thaster seized on the idea immediately, envisioning himself as an all-seeing master of the arcane. Understanding her adopted son’s ambitious heart, Koya gave him her permission and Desna’s blessing and sent him off to pursue his dream of becoming a wizard.

Thaster did do well at the Twilight Academy, showing not only an aptitude for learning but an intense focus on his studies. He also demonstrated a gift for oneiromancy, the prediction of the future through dreams. Divination suited him on many levels. Knowing the future seemed to promise not only power but surety--why trouble to puzzle over the complicated emotions and motivations of the people around you, if the arcane arts might reveal their very souls?

Truthfully, Thaster was lonely at the Twilight Academy. The other students were, if anything, even more wrapped up in magical studies than he, and he had no friends or family in Galduria. His early attempts at peering through time brought him face-to-face with his parent’s death at goblin hands, and he found himself missing the comfort of his adopted family much more than he expected.

When word came to him that granny Niska had died in her sleep, Thaster took a leave of absence to visit her grave in Sandpoint. He reconnected joyfully with his adopted family, and on hearing that Koya was planning a long caravan journey, was overcome with nostalgia for their early travels. He resolved to put his formal studies on hold--after all, Thaster the Golden had mastered more than enough magic to make his way!--and head out to see what the real world had to offer a bold young master magician.

Thaster is a lanky young man with sharp black eyes above gaunt cheeks. He wears flamboyant golden robes and dyes his normally mousy hair a brassy blonde to reflect the grandiose title he’s chosen for his career as a wizard. He speaks in fragments and non sequiturs, a symptom of thinking faster than he can run his mouth.

Class Features:
Arcane Bond: Ring.

Arcane School: Divination (Foresight).
Banned schools are evocation and illusion.
Forewarned (Su): You can always act in the surprise round even if you fail to make a Perception roll to notice a foe, but you are still considered flat-footed until you take an action. In addition, you receive a +1 bonus on initiative checks.
Prescience (Su): At the beginning of your turn, you may, as a free action, roll a single d20. At any point before your next turn, you may use the result of this roll as the result of any d20 roll you are required to make. If you do not use the d20 result before your next turn, it is lost. You can use this ability 7 times per day.

Feats
Improved Initiative: +4 to initiative. Thaster is a quick thinker.

Scribe Scroll: Wizard bonus feat.

Toughness: You gain +3 hit points. For every Hit Die you possess beyond 3, you gain an additional +1 hit point. If you have more than 3 Hit Dice, you gain +1 hit points whenever you gain a Hit Die (such as when you gain a level).

Traits
Good Dreams (Desna): Each time you sleep, the GM tells you of a dangerous dream you had. Once per day, if you have to make a saving throw against a threat related or similar to that dream, you can roll twice and take the more favorable result. If you do not encounter circumstances similar to the threat or situation you dreamed, this trait has no effect that day.

Focused Mind: Your childhood was either dominated by lessons of some sort (whether musical, academic, or other) or by a horrible home life that encouraged your ability to block out distractions and focus on the immediate task at hand. You gain a +2 trait bonus on concentration checks.

Foster Child: Koya Mvashti might be old enough to be your grandmother, but to you, she’s always been your mom. Ever since your parents passed away, Koya’s been taking care of you as if she were your mother. You never really figured out why Koya took you into her care, but you do know she’s done this before—most recently with Sandru Vhiski, whom you think of as your brother. Growing up, Koya made sure that you had the best education possible, particularly in one particular topic. You gain a +2 bonus on skill checks with \ Knowledge (Geography). In addition, you gain a +1 trait bonus on all attack rolls against foes that threaten Koya.
