About Straightjacket
David Beraken grew up in Pueblo CO. His Dad was an engineer with a local steelmaking company, while his mother had died in childbirth. Dave was a varsity highschool wrestler, star of the team. Not the sharpest student, but respectful, and not a troublemaker.
One evening Dave asked to head into the plant with his Dad while he worked late. He liked the spectacle of pouring steel, with the blazing light and showering sparks. He had been there before so he already knew the safety stuff.
Heading into take care of some work he had left to do for the next days speciality melt, they found a bunch of thugs dumping a body into the electic arc furnace.
The thugs saw them at the same time. Having no qualms about getting rid of a few more bodies, they charged the two. Donald (his dad) picked up a wrench and yelled to his son to get back to the car and get away. Dave ran as the thugs managed to overwhelm his dad with numbers. Dave tried to run, but seeing the thugs pick up his dad's limp body and prepare to toss it into the furnace, Dave ran back to try and save him. As one of the thugs clubbed him with a pipe, his father's body was consigned to the infernal heat of the molten steel.
But Dave was not laid out by the pipe, in fact it didn't really hurt. It's like his body just yielded without pain. Enraged at the death of his father Dave lashed out, his limbs stretching to unnatural lengths and dealing crushing blows.
He easily laid out the thugs. But his father was already dead. He wept atop the catwalk over the furnace, until he heard a voice.
"Buck up there son, I'm not gone. Just different now. " And he saw his dad standing there, translucent atop the catwalk with him.
From then out his dad was always with him. He was able to keep the house, as his dad had a huge insurance policy on top of the company one. His dad advised him to keep the powers on the down low, figuring they must have been some mutant gene (those were cropping up these days on people with odd powers).
However his constant talking to someone who wasn't there upset people around him, and the school counselor had him sent to a psychiatrist. While the doctor found the situation strange, it seemed to be a grief coping mechanism and nothing calling for institutionalization since Dave wasn't violent. This did take him off the wresting team however, as a bit of caution was felt warranted.
Since then Dave has spent a lot of time in the mountains during his spare time. His dad coaches him on his ethics and he practices the use of his powers. The trees have not fared well.
