Knight of Halfbay

We have not heard from Krisanna since the GM's return. I fear we may have lost a player.

Oh, gosh. I need to get back into character! What is Makander's personality again? Ah, yes! Unmagical anthropomorphic haunted-by-failed-love exiled paladin!

Knight of Halfbay

Updated Makander's name. I decided I wanted him to have a surname, but I wasn't feeling Halfbay since it's more of a "he's from there", so The Baron of Halfbay and his children are the Brightbill Family!

Yay, worldbuilding!

Plus the boards were warning me I was on my 10th post, so if I was changing his name, it had to be now!

Knight of Halfbay

I think I'm up?

Upon seeing the hostiles in front of him, Makander immediately turns so his opposite shoulder is blocking the goblin's line of sight to the dying (possibly already dead) man's body on his shoulder. Unfortunately, he hears the goblins are now behind them as well, so he dashes to gully's steep walls to the southwest (assuming map's oriented to up as north and lays the poisoned fellow behind some rocks.

A fireball explodes from the elementalist's hands unexpectedly. Assuming he's still alive, Makander retrieves his battleaxe and shield and calls out to their attackers.

"Quaaaaaaack!! Flee now goblins! As you can see we have mighty magic on our side. This is your chance to keep your lives!"

Knight of Halfbay

For what it's worth, I think Krisanna was truly just curious as to what McGuffin we received not trying to steal it.

Of course, the archmaster can interpret her interest any way he chooses. Just my two cents in case of any misunderstanding. :)

Knight of Halfbay

"No need for a litter," Makander says as he pulls the man's cloak tight and tucks in the edges. Then he hoists the wrapped form onto his plated shoulder. "If Archmaster Aodhan has cleared the man of injuries aside from the arrow, this will be good enough. We don't have the time to waste."

The mallard looks around the area for any obvious threats and begins to trundle down the path in a slow but steady jog.

Well, sounds like wounded dude is out of luck unless our newest player enters game with purify poison or some other magical healing.

You have discovered a quest.

Knight of Halfbay

Much appreciated! That should make things very convenient.

And now Makander waits frozen in time to see if any of companions can succeed at healing the man. Rolling below 5 may not be worth risking a demon given the likely outcome of that failure being the man's death or Makander poisoning himself if the GM's feeling sadistic!

Knight of Halfbay

Makander rushes forward to lift the man in case he has arrows in other wounds which would be driven in deeper upon his collapse. His feathered brow furrowed, he looks to his companions. "I have no training in the healing arts, so I'm loathe to make an attempt before one of you who may know such things."

Makander kneels cradling the man's form slightly to relieve any unwanted pressure until he can be examined.

The more I play, the less I like 'proactive rolling' :P

I'm also a large fan of this way of roleplaying. My original gaming background is Warhammer Fantasy RP which by and large is not a system you actually want the dice to be involved, so roleplaying your way out of things was always the preferred method if you wanted to stay alive, sane, and unmutated. :P

However the irony is in this system, if we don't roll, we can't advance except by the GM's grace since we need those dragons and demons. Kind of a tricky one there on whether to call for rolls or not.

@GM Br0p: Any chance you can link the community character sheet in the campaign header so it appears at the top of each page, please?

Knight of Halfbay

At the sound, Makander lifts his bill and sniffs the air.

Bastonn nodded at Sir Makander, acknowledging his concern. "Fire safety is important Sir, but right now Master Aodhan is right," he growled, urgency in his voice.

"Aye. Keep your wits about you, everyone. Back home in Halfbay, we have creatures in the deep wilds called weepers which mimic the sounds of people or animals in distress to lure in their prey."

Makander unlimbers his shield and places his hand on the haft of his battleaxe, but he leaves it undrawn for now. He nods approvingly when the others draws their weapons and says, "Watch my back. I'll head in first without weapons as to not frighten them if it is indeed some poor unfortunates."

Without hesitation, Makander moves towards the whimpering, eyes darting everywhere.

Edit:

GM BR0p wrote:
The group carefully moves around the bend, weapons at the ready. Turning the corner, you see a cloaked humanoid figure lying in the middle of the rocky trail, only 20 meters ahead of Bastonn in the lead. He (at least you assume it's a he) is wearing a simple but thick gray robe and clutching a dark bundle to his chest. He continues whimpering, which then turns into a rattling wheeze, making you believe that the person is gravely wounded. From your current position you can't see his hooded face, but judging by his overall physiology, you guess that he is human.

Makander acknowledges the mage's wise words with a grunt, but continues to move towards the figure.

"I am Sir Makander of Halfbay," he announces. "You appear hurt. Would you allow us to assist you?"

The knight stops out of arms reach concern evident in his frown as he regards the human-like individual.

Knight of Halfbay

A brown mallard drenched in plate metal tramps up behind the party.

Makander scowls at the group. "My dear fellows, are you all not aware of fire safety? Archmaster Aodhan's magical fire was not dying out as quickly as that which occurs in nature. Quack! It took a mean minute and a small pile of snow to be sure it was finally done smoldering."

GM BrOp: Do we roll Awareness, or is that a GM roll in these rules?

Makander reporting in!

Pregen description wrote:
Makander is the youngest son of the Baron of Halfbay, who resides at his seat of power many days’ travel to the east. Knowing that the title will pass to his older (but lesser) brother, he searched his soul and decided to forge his own path. He takes great pride in his name and honor, and accepts missions that help the weak and punish the wicked.

What's not listed is that Makander left behind the love of his life who will likely be married to his brother erelong. He has convinced himself it is better this way, and his departure will make everything smoother. He has walled off his sadness with a gruff exterior and has thrown himself into his knight's oath to protect those who know not how to do so themselves. And yet, Makander has a touch of humility knowing there is still much knowledge of the world for him to learn, stronger techniques to master, and that better gear will enable him to continue on the path of defender of the weak.

The world is wide open, and what better way to begin his journey with taking part in a hunt for treasure with which he may upgrade his equipment and pay for tutelage at the hands of masters.

@Everyone: If we are going with the mutual attack on caravan as the catalyst for togetherness, Makander would have been present at invitation of the lead merchant. Why would they not avail themselves of the presence of a knight? Otherwise, I can work on a different introduction if you want to keep that one for just the three of you.
