About Ryuko Kazuya

"I look inside myself and see my heart is black. My power, however, is unquestioned. I will write your name among the others who have failed to turn it."

Backstory:

Spoiler:
Born to parents that didn't care for him, Kazuya was abandoned early and taken in by a group of thugs.
With his adopted family, Kazuya's rage and hatred were put to good use, using him as a strong-arm. He found, however, that he enjoyed it. Though not the nicest of people, the thugs made him feel useful and gave him a sense of belonging.
One day, a wandering sensei who had long watched the young Kazuya approached him. He offered the boy a life that would be hard, but he promised to help Kazuya finally attain inner peace. The boy was intrigued and left his family.
The monk brought the boy to his monastery. The place was a grand dojo. Seeing all of the other budoka pummeling each other, enduring greater punishments, and brawling from sun up to sun down, interested Kazuya greatly.
Years passed and Kazuya continued his training. When the time came for his initiation under a more focused master, Kazuya chose the path of the dragon and took the name Ryuko, meaning "dragon child." The master he learned from in this path was a harsh, but fair, warrior of his arts.
Many years passed and the boy grew to be a man. Each day, Ryuko would fight the other initiates, proving himself in strength and focus. Kazuya found that, though this never quelled his inner rage, he had found a constructive channel for it.
Then came time for Kazuya's final test - a test of kindness against a weaker opponent.
The warrior spirit within Ryuko, however, forged ahead, and he summarily defeated his opponent without so much as a blink.
Seeing this, his masters cast him out, saying that they did for him all that they could, but his inner beast was too strong.
Now, Kazuya wanders the world, seeking ever greater opponents to punish, to prove his might to even the gods.

Human move:

Spoiler:
Most steadings will have temples that are friendly to wandering monks. You may petition them for shelter, and they will almost always give you a place to stay. It won't be luxurious, but you'll have a roof over your head and rice to eat.

Starting moves:

Spoiler:

  • Meditation (WIS)
When you spend a few hours in quiet meditation, lose all of your current ki and, hold 3 ki. You may spend 1 ki to gain one of the following effects:
    • Deal an additional +1d6 damage with your next attack
    • Prevent 1d6 damage to yourself
    • Take +1 forward to your next Spout Lore or Discern Realities move
    • Roll +WIS instead of +Bond when you Aid Another.
You may only use one ki per roll. You cannot use ki if you are wearing any armor.
  • Iron Palm Training
Your unarmed strikes have a range of hand and close. You can always safely use unarmed strikes against creatures with dangerous forms. For example, you can hit a creature covered in spikes without taking damage, your hand won’t be damaged from punching an iron golem, and striking a fire elemental will not burn you. You still may have to Defy Danger to make an unarmed strike against huge creatures, however.
  • Monk’s Path
You follow a strict way of discipline to focus your ki and follow the way to enlightenment. Choose a path from the list. Each path gives you an additional move, a way to mark XP at the end of the session, and a restriction. If you ever violate your path’s restriction, you lose 1 ki and take -1 forward.
    PATH: Path of the Dragon
PATH RESTRICTION: You can never refuse a challenge or retreat from battle. If someone challenges you to a fight, you must accept, even if your foes outnumber you or are clearly much stronger.
PATH-ASSOCIATED MOVE: When you shout with great force before attacking and spend 1 ki, your next unarmed attack has a range of near and gains the forceful tag.
PATH BONUS XP MOVE: At the end of the session, if you defeated someone stronger than yourself without help, mark XP.
