Description:

Rivane is a big and muscular man. He has tanned skin, red hair and a short braided beard. His eyes are solid silver and his tears multicolored, betraying his celestal blood. His voice echoes strangely, as if from beyond. Various tattoos cover his skin, including the Sosmo (Forever Dead) and Graxt (Eternity) shoanti simbols, a black rose (representing Pharasma) and a wolf skull. He wears the black priestly garments typical of the Pharasmin church, a holy symbol of Pharasma, and when necessary, an armor made of black scales form Stroval Plateau lizards, that he took with him when he left his Quah. He has a ceremonial obsidian dagger with a bone handle carved with whippoorwills beside an ordinary dagger on his belt. He wears his mother's totem spear on his back.

The deaths of his parents first and his lover recently both took a toll on him, and he has become rather taciturn as a result. When he has a good day, he smiles quietly at the small wonders of life, and is amenable to speak about his past and his people. Being able to hear the voices of the departed, he isn't particularly caring about the mundane suffering, but nonetheless is a kind man.

Background:
When Rivane came to the world in a yurt of the Skoan-Quah 67 winters ago, he was stillborn. As the shaman spoke the rites for the departed, Rivane came back to life, and the markings that form the Graxt pattern appeared on his skin. He opened his eyes, that flashed silver, revealing his celestial ancestry, and maybe one of the reasons the Ancestors had brought him back.
His father Veyho Sleeps-With-Wolves, was a shoanti outrider, and his mother Nanali Voice-Of-The-Rain one of the thundercallers of the Skoan-Quah. He was a quiet child, and often stood still, with the head askance, as if listening to bodiless voices. He grew up more slowly than his peers, so he grew distant and spent more time with the clan shaman than playing with other children. When he was nearly twenty, after a specially intense vision, he discovered that he could wield magic, setting him further apart. From that day mischievous spirits started following him around, playing small pranks on him.
His parents were already old when he was deemed adult by the clan shaman, and as his maturity rites were being performed, they were killed by an abnormally big cinderwolf that attacked the camp. Rivane took the totem spear from his mother's dead body as the warriors attempted to slay the beast and dealt the killing blow to the wolf. They say that he seemed to embody the fury of a thousand honored dead.
That night, as the rites for the dead were being performed for his parents and the other dead, Rivane had a vision, and the following morning he left the Skoan-Quah takin only his armor and his mother's spear and began the journey to Korvosa.

Once in Korvosa, he stayed for a time with distant relatives of his father, that's when he met the one that would be his husband, Fane, a chelaxian/varisian priest of Serenrae. Fane lived near Rivane's relatives and they met nearly every day, and when a woman from their neighborhood went into labour early, they were both called to help deliver the baby, as the priest of Pharasma was late. When the priest arrived, she and Rivane started talking, and she invited him to the Cathedral, to speak with the Bishop. After many religious discussions with Bishop Keppira, Rivane assimilated Pharasma to his beliefs and moved to the Cathedral as a priest. He and Fane kept seeing each other, and after a two year courtship they were married. Alas, tragedy struck again, and as Fane was treating an injured orphan, he was robed and killed.

Rivane has been unable to find his husband's killer, although he has been able to track his husband's missing ring to a man named Gaedren Lamm.
