Background:
Urchin
You grew up on the streets alone, orphaned, and poor. You had no one to watch over you or to provide for you, so you learned to provide for yourself. You fought fiercely over food and kept a constant watch out for other desperate souls w ho might steal from you. You slept on rooftops and in alleyways, exposed to the elements, and endured sickness without the advantage of medicine or a place to recuperate. You’ve survived despite all odds, and did so through cunning, strength, speed, or some combination of each.
Personal Characteristics:
Alignment: True Neutral
Personality: Ren is proud of his magical prowess and willing to flaunt it for anyone willing to watch. He talks about his past as a student of a prominent Magical Academy, his ornate staff carved by elves gifted for solving an issue they had with a troll, and his hand written spellbook containing ancient arcane secrets he’s discovered in deep spiritual meditation. Few things he says are true because his past is filled with death and a despicable deal with an agent of darkness. He doesn’t lie to be malicious or to trick people out of their hard earned coin but rather to protect himself.
Appearance: The young Halfling has a set of unremarkable traits due to his present parentage. Brown hair and eyes frame a cherubic face and tops a thin, lithe body. Ren stands 3ft tall and weighs about 35lbs. He dresses in a fine wizards robe and stole gripping his staff tightly, ever ready to show off his skills. His “spellbook” hangs from a thin chain on his hip and jangles as he walks.
Ideal: Ren aspires to become powerful enough to overpower a dragon like the one that took his family.
Bond: A massive dragon melted his home village and his parents with it. He now seeks the power to avenge them.
Flaw: Ren trusts himself more than anyone.
Back Story:
Ren’s parents ran a goat farm on the outskirts of Candlekeep. His father tended the fields and did scrimshaw while his mother kept a comfortable home and painted a little. The simple life didn’t suit him very well so he’d sneak off to the city to run with the other delinquents and ne’er-do-wells who taught him about life on the streets. He stole, vandalized, and trespassed while rarely getting caught. The biggest saving grace was his home in the near-wilderness to retreat to if things got too terrible.
That all changed when he saw the sickly green and yellow haze that formed over his village. He had been atop a vantage point he’d wanted to sneak into when the bells rang out and the screams began from afar. He ran to his family farm at full speed and found devastation. The melted corpses of his herd would not prepare him for the bubbling piles of flesh that his parents had become. The vomit came for what seemed like forever. Gathering what he could, Ren left to Candlekeep to try to start a new life.
He needed a way out. Stealing and lying didn’t pay much and he had no more home to speak of. Having no other plans, Ren wandered the town, lamenting his lot in life. That’s when he saw a street performer conjuring minor illusions to wow the crowd. That was his way out: Magic. He sought out the local wizard for training. Graciously, the old human accepted the boy as a student. A month passes and Ren could not perform even the most basic of cantrips. His master was forced to send him back to the halfway house from whence he came. This dispersion broke something in the Halfling. He became depressed and angry calling out to the Gods for help. Unfortunately, something heard him…
