I've seen a few debates about this on the boards but I'm still looking for a definite answer. I want to play an Ultimate Magus in our pathfinder campaign. How many/much of the special abilities from sorceror and wizard will carry over when I level as an ultimate Magus.

My assumption was that I would no longer gain the special abilities from either class, though the ones I already got would get more powerful by caster level. And, that as a specialist wizard, I would still gain the bonus spells at each spell level.

Can anyone clarify this for me?

You don't stop being a specialist when you choose a Prestige Class. [/

I agree, its not like you regain access to your forbidden schools. And the point of specializing is that you gain some power in your chosen school by giving something up. Regaredless of whether I am taking a prestige class or going straight wizard, I'm still giving up something. Not giving the wizard bonus spells when they prestige class is just handicapping them unnecessarily. I agree that the other specialist powers, like the evokers energy ray and wall of energy abilities, should be available only if you take wizard levels. If you take away the bonus spells your actually weakening the wizard from the 3.5 version. How is that balanced?

If this has been officially clarified, I haven't seen anything, so I'll ask again:

Are domain powers and wizard school specialisation powers supposed to be based on caster level or actual class level? Will an archmage 5/ evoker 15 get the capstone ability?

I'd like to hear an answer to this one too. I can understand that maybe a sizard sorceror would not get those abilities if they take a prestige class but for the cleric it totally loses the attractiveness of the Pathfinder rules.

If a cleric no longer gets his domain powers when prestige classing then he'd be better off using the old 3.5 rules where you at least got that one extra spell/day and weak domain power.
