The man:
Standing about six feet tall and built with an intimidatingly rangy strength to him, the fire-haired Rastavar is a striking figure and familiar to anyone who frequents the Stone River Ferry Company's properties or spends much time at the port at all. He is built seemingly entirely out of hard edges and gristle and the customary scowl on his long face does not invite easy companionship. While he does spend a considerable amount of time working on the ferry and at home, he does range into town from time to time.

Interestingly, he has applied himself enough to pick up a couple of languages. Notably he commands the Baris tongue well despite the regional slang that varies from township to township. It helps that there are a few speakers that come through the town from time to time and that he was half raised in it. His other project is Sylvan which he has mostly learned in order to shout expletives at the fey that now roam the riverbanks unchecked and play cruel tricks on wayward rivermen,

Rast was born in Morgan's Ford and spent much of his youth in the shadow of his more intelligent, more talented and much celebrated brother. Despondent, Rast became something of a delinquent gaining a reputation as a troublemaker and scrapper that still follows him throughout the city today. It does not help that certain members of the citizenry still blame him for the death of his brother and that he blames himself on some level or other.

A few years ago, the Stone River burst its banks and the flash flood claimed more than a few lives. Among them Rast's brother Corvin who had drug Rast out into the maelstrom to try and save those that they could. The details change from telling to telling but the only thing that could be agreed upon was that Corvin was swept away and Rast survived. The time is well past to put rumors down and Rast, for whatever reason, never disputed his responsibility for his brother's fate. Now he makes his living on the very river that claimed his brother's life. A more poetic man would comment on the irony inherent in the situation but Rast was never one for book-learning.

Since then, Rast has become a man caught between his past and his future. His reputation, his parents, and his own guilty conscience keep him trapped in the dying city of Morgan's Ford and thus his part while his potential as a riverman and the anonymity of a life elsewhere pull him toward the future. Someday soon, he will need to make a decision about the course his life will take but until then, he will deal with the familiar problems of his life.
