Raidon grew up in a small tribe on the Ashari grasslands. His people were horsemen, and he had been taught from a young age to ride a horse masterfully under the most strenuous of conditions. Because the Ashari grasslands were located between the feuding nations of Kal Dorem and Kal Daem, these skills were utilized regularly, as the Asharian tribes were often caught between the two feuding nations.
One year, the armies of Kal Dorem had camped out on the plains on their way to a clash with the armies of Kal Daem. Raidon, a youth of about 14, along with one of his friends, had snuck into the camps of the army as a coming of age hazing ceremony of sorts. They were supposed to sneak in, filch a weapon or token for proof, stay the night unnoticed, and sneak back to the village in the morning. However, a surprise attack by the armies of Kal Daem quickly ruined this plan.
In the middle of the night, Raidon woke to the sounds of gunshots and screaming. Frantically trying to shake off the throes of sleep, Raidon stumbled out of the supply tent he had hidden in. Around him, soldiers scrambled to grab their armor and equipment and participate in the combat. Immediately, Raidon thought of his friend, Imai, who had headed off earlier that evening in search of a place to hide, in the direction the gunfire was now coming from. Panic filled his mind, and he took off running in the direction of the firing. "Imai! IMAI! WHERE ARE YOU? IMAI!"
Blindly running forward, Raidon suddenly staggered backwards, looking up at the soldier he had just an into. Taking in his armor, Raidon realized the solder was from the Kal Daem camp, one of the attackers. The soldier scowled at him, and began to raise his pistol. His eyes widening, Raidon began to back up frantically, but he wasn't fast enough. The soldier pulled the trigger, and Raidon braced for pain.
None came. Slowly, he opened the eyes he hadn't realized he had pinched shut. Standing before him was a man in slightly more distinguishing armor than the other soldiers. He had blood dripping down one arm, the other arm holding a smoking pistol directed towards the Kal Daem soldier. As Raidon took in the scene, realizing that the king of Kal Dorem was the one standing in front of him, who had just saved his life, the Kal Daem solder collapsed.
After this, Raidon swears fealty to the Brock Saleen, the king of Kal Dorem, in gratitude for having saved his life, and respect for a man who would risk his life to save a kid of a random tribe on the plains who wasn't even supposed to be there.
At some point after joining the army, Raidon impresses a Griffon, who volunteers to become his partner and mount.
