About Pherenike Kyriakos
Pherenike is the daughter of Macrina, a servant in the Aristedes household. As she grew, the family took a particular interest in the child, seeing to her education and using their influence to get her into military training. She was on the verge of accepting a commission into the Taldan Phalanx when word reached her of the Aristedes family's misfortune. Receiving a sealed letter from the family patriarch with instructions to deliver it to his son, a professor at the Kitharodian Academy, Pherenike refuses her commission, feeling a deep loyalty to the family that was always so kind to her. As Akhenaten Aristedes is the only family member at large to whom she can repay her debt, she swears a solemn oath to protect him and to serve him in whatever way she can as he attempts to remove the curse on his bloodline. When the Aristedes family is returned to their rightful place in Taldan society, there will be time to take a commission.
What Pherenike doesn't know is that there is a reason for the Aristedes family's patronage: She is the child of one of the Aristedes men, the product of a dalliance with a servant. Her mother was promised that both she and her child would be well taken care of, on the condition that she not embarrass the family by revealing its parentage. The young woman accepted the deal and has lived up to her end of the bargain, leaving Pherenike ignorant of the identity of her father and her personal stake in removing the taint from the Aristedes bloodline.
